W.F. HILL DIES AT RIPE AGE OF 77 Mrs. W.F. Hill, aged and beloved life-long Heard countian, died at the home at Loftin, Monday, after an extended illness. The largely attended funeral was conducted at Ephesus of which she was a charter member 50 years ago. Rev. M.W. Yarbrough, minister and Lewis & Lipford as directors, with interment in the churchyard. Surviving are the aged husband, two sons, G.B. Hill, Smyrna, GA, and W.C. Hill, Franklin; two daughters, Mrs. H.H. Maxwell and Mrs. H.S. Veal,bothof Atlanta, one brother Joe Moseley of Atlanta. ___ MRS. TOMMIE V. GREEN, AUBURN, ALA., IS DEAD Mrs. Tommie V. Green, 57, former Heard countian, died at an Opelika, Ala. hospital Jan 25. Funeral services were held at a funeral home in Roanoke, Ala., Jan 26 at 2 o'clock. Rev. Steely, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke officiated. Burial was in the churchyard at Paran Baptist church of which she was a former member. She was the widow of the late W.S. Green who was Sheriff of Heard County in 1916-17. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. L.A. Brown of Roanoke; seven sisters, Mrs. J.H. Kitchens and Mrs. G.C. Middlebrooks of Heard County; Mrs. W.D. Wingo of Eastaboga, Ala; Mrs. L.R. Kerr of Auburn Ala; Mrs. W.M. Woodard ?, Miss Hattie Brown of Roanoke, Ala; Mrs. Eddie M. Ruggles of St. Petersburg, Fla three brothers, Clifford M. and Horace Brown of Roanoke, Ala; and Floyd L. Brown of Mississippi. ____ YELLOW DIRT Community News Clarence Haynes who was injured in a car accident some two weeks ago, is able to be out again. __ Clifford and Mrs. Cash of Liberty are visiting Joe and Mrs. Bonner. __ Mrs. Ray Johnson of Columbus is visiting F.J. and Mrs. Dorough. __ Jesse and Mrs. Walden of Cove, are visiting Charles and Mrs. Haynes. __ J.H. Thornton and family have moved to near Hollingsworth Ferry. ___ STATE LINE Community News J.H. O'Neal spent a few days with his wife and daughter, Sarah Lou, in Roanoke, Ala., who was sick with flu. ___ John Wiley Dennis of LaGrange spent the weekend with his grandparents, J.T. and Mrs. Middlebrooks. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. Stephen McCutchen, Emory at Oxford, braved the weather to spend Sunday at home. __ Mr. Donald Staples spent the past week with his brother, Supt. Eric Staples, in Perry. ___ Mrs. Stanton Adams has returned from Roanoke, Ala., where she visited her mother, Mrs. S.F. Gilliland, who has been ill, but somewhat improved. ___ Messrs. Guy Johnson and Raymond Awbrey attended "Gone with the Wind" in Atlanta, Sunday. ___ Eugene Marshall of Simpson, caught a snow bird in a trap with a band around its leg with the name of B.O. Sury, Washington, D.C. 196,273. ___ Mr. and Mrs. L.O. McIntosh, of Roopville, GA, announce the engagement of their daughter, Evelyn Ruth to William Oertell Barker of Franklin, the marriage date to be announced later. ___ W.W. LIPHAM, 68, DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS W.W. Lipham, prominent farmer and citizen, died at his home near Waresville, Tuesday, with funeral Thursday at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. J.C. Adams, and burial with Masonic honors at the Bethel churchyard. Mr. Lipham was a native of Heard county, always standing for the right, a good man and neighbor and ever held in high esteem by those who knew him best. His home was always one of hospitality. Surviving are his widow, five sons and five daughters: Byron, Hulet, of LaGrange, Amos of Jackson Miss., Sam of East Point, Bill of Franklin; Mrs. A.J. Pike, Rock Mills, Ala, Mrs. Cliff Barber, LaGrange, Mrs. Howard Pope, Mrs. Bob Nelms and Miss Kate Lipham, Franklin; two brothers, T.A. and C.F. Lipham, Franklin; two sisters, Mrs. R.A. Bonner, Carroll County, Mrs. R.F. Hunter has been sick for some time. ___ Idus Middlebrooks and wife spent Thursday last in Atlanta shopping in the forenoon and going to see "Gone With the Wind" in the afternoon. __ Zed Nelms and wife have moved back from LaGrange. __ Mrs. Homer Kitchens has been right sick but is slowly improving. ___ Jesse Arnett's family have all been down with the flu. ___ Tilman Cooley who has been in the Army for over three years, married an Athens girl one day last week. They spent last Thursday night with his grandmother, Mrs. Nicie Cooley. ___ CARD OF THANKS To our nearby neighbors, the faithful physician, and the large circle of friends father away, we wish to express our gratitude for the many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness in ministering to our husband and father, Edward Oliver Kitchens, Sr., of Waresville, during the days of his last illness; and for your words of sympathy, the beautiful flowers and your willingness to be of service after his death will ever be remembered. Whitley upon his retirement as post master at Glenn after faithfully serving this community for the past 42 years. He has served under 11 administrations, being absent from duty only two days during this time, which was due to illness. Mrs. J.L. Whitley is his succesor. __ Whitley Barrett and John Daniel of Hogansville spent Sunday with Mrs. Beula Barrett. ___ Miss Ethel Kitchens, of Doublehead, Ala., spent the weekend with her sister, Mrs. I.Q. Adams Jr. ___ One of the lovely social events of the past week was a shower given Saturday afternoon by Mrs. L.C. Adams Sr. in honor of Mrs. Cephus Adams, a recent bride. As each guest entered she registered her name and a good wish to the bride in the bride's book. Those assisting were Misses Katherine and Ernestine Adams. After a delightful social hour the guest were served a delicious salad course by the hostess. Eighteen ladies called during the afternoon. The honoree received many lovely and useful gifts. Valentine motifs were used in decorations and games. ___ PARAN Community News Mrs. Dora Sanders is spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. Guss Stephens, below Columbus. ___ Mrs. Elma Stephens and children spent last week in Fairfax, Ala with her sister Mrs. Bonney Janney. ___ The roads in our community are almost impassable, the mud in many places axle deep to cars which have to be pulled out with teams. ___ Talmadge Stephens and family spent the weekend with his father, J.W. Stephens. ___ Services for Miss Almyra Ware, member of a pioneer family of this section and a sister of A.C. Ware, prominent Heard countian, were held last week in Hogansville Baptist church. The Rev. Richard Howard officiated. Miss Ware died Monday at the home of her brother R.M. Ware in Hogansville. She was a daughter of the late State Senator J.B. Ware and Mrs. Sara Simms Ware of Heard County. Surviving are five brothers, A.C., A.Z., H.H., and R.M. Ware of Hogansville and R.M. Ware of Newnan. ___ Mrs. R.F. Hodnett, wife of a minister who served many years in the North Georgia Methodist conference, died Tuesday at her home in Palm Harbor, Fla. The former Miss Mary Wessie Turner, she was a cousin of Dr. W.A. Turner and a niece of Mrs. Arthur Mann of Newnan. She left Georgia about 25 years ago when her husband was transferred to the Florida conference. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Walb of Clearwater, Fla., an Mrs. Elliot Ritch of Trilby, Fla. For four years Rev and Mrs. Hodnett resided in Franklin, where the latter was one of the most popular and beloved pastors this charge ever had. ___ Mrs. Birl Arrington, beloved Ridgeway lady, died Friday last, and was buried the next day. __ Mrs. J.W. Echols, 76, after a long period of ill health, died at the home Friday last, with funeral at Centralhatchee Saturday. Lewis & Lipford diretors. She is survived by her aged husband and one brother, Ben Eley. ___ Mrs. Allie N. Hansforrd, who resided in Franklin for many years, died at her home in Atlanta, Sunday last, where the funeral was held. The body was brought to Franklin and interred Tuesday afternoonin the family lot in the city cemetery. Almon has been quite ill for the past few days resultant from the flu replapse and through somewhat improved is still confined to his room and may be held there for some time further by his physician. Part of the time he has not been allowed to see friends calling to congratulate him on re-election. __ Attorney A.L. Hardy of Hamilton was in the city Tuesday. __ Miss Johnnie Daniel, Atlanta, was at home with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Daniel the weekend. He is improving. ___ Vernon and Mrs. Adamson are the proud parents of a baby girl. They will call her Patricia. __ For some time it has been rumored that Mr. Render Heard had joined the benedicts since his removal to LaGrange, but the report could not be confirmed. Mr. Heard is the only son of Mrs. and Mrs. S.R. Heard of Franklin, andi s a popular young businessman with many friends were were anxious to ferret out the rumor. To settle it, this announcement is reproduced from an issue of the LaGrange Daily News of this week: " Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Summerlin announce the marriage of their daughter, Seba, to Render J. Heard, of Franklin, the ceremony having been solemnized January 18th in West Point." The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Summerlin of LaGrange and spent her early childhood in Franklin. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. John Green, prominent Randolph countian and brother of J.L.B. Green, formerly of this county, died the past week. ___ Miss Sarah Wortham of Centralhatchee, student at the University of Georgia, appeared in two presentations of Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" this week in Athens and Atlanta. She is a member of the University Women's Glee Club. ___ Some days ago, Postmaster Carl Simonton issued the smallest money order ever issued at the office.
