Getting into a crowd attending a Legion Raffle on a new Dodge deluxe sedan, he was induced to buy 6 tickets and one of them was the lucky number that won the car. It is a peach and naturally the family is proud of it. ___ TEXAS Community News Miss Thelma Drummond returned home Saturday after a 10 day visit to her brothers in Roanoke, Ala. ___ Little Ronzelle Mulkey has returned home after a long visit to her Aunt, Mrs. C.B. Denney of Hogansville. __ Luke and Mrs. Golden visited relatives near LaFayette, Ala., last weekend. __ Luther and Mrs. Richardson of LaGrange, spent the weekend here with Mose and Mrs. Drummond. __ A negro under charge of burglarizing a downtown gorcery store sawed his way through the bars of the city jail in Carrollton Monday afternoon while city employes went about their duties on the floor above. Meanwhile the negro's father-in-law is in the county jail named as the person who delivered the hacksaw. He is Rufus Ross of Bowdon. ___ PARAN Community News Walter Cook is spending a few days with the family of his son Hood Cook. __ Walter Stephens has returned from LaGrange where he has spent two weeks under treatment and seems better. ___ Grady Cook and Felton Stephens of near Columbus are spending a few days with their mother and grandmother. __ Recent guests of Jim and Mrs. O'Neal were Frank and Mrs. Kendrick and daughter, Martha, Mrs. Addie Kendrick and sister Mrs. Bessie Herren of Lanett. ___ Carl Crouch of West Point spent awhile Saturday with his brother Lon Crouch. __ We are glad to hear that Mrs. Johnnie Kitchens is better after being very ill. __ Mrs. Mollie O'Neal has been sick for the past two weeks. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Miss Emily Jean Daniel, Cedartown, is the guest of Mrs. G.A. Thomasson, Editor of the Carroll County Times and Bowdon Bulletin celebrated his 89th birthday on April 27th, it being also his 55th year in newspaper business. His record has been one of great accomplishment. His 83rd birthday was spent at the celebration in Heard County in honor of the 50th year of service of the editor of The News and Banner, who now has 56 years to his service credit, a little more than a year on the venerable editor of the Times. It is of not also that both Thomasson and McCutchen were born in Heard County. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lane spent Sunday with Mrs. Marie Upchurch in Atlanta. __ Mrs. J.F. Terrell, near Carroll line, had the misfortune to break her hip by a fall a few days ago. ___ Mrs. James Harden, of Toccoa, and Miss Willie Heard of Atlanta, spent this week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Heard. ___ Post Master Carl Simonton has resumed his second term, having been reappointed and the senate confirmed him several days ago. But he has made such an efficient and courteous official, nobody expected less of the government. ___ Officers captured several Stills up the river the past few days and a number had longing eyes when some 15 gallons of liquid sugar and other concoction were poured out in town Wednesday. The state revenue rushers, with Deputy Sherriff Arrington are making it hot for the river gulch moonshiners as well as in other county sections. ____ Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Miller and Miss Jean Miller spent several days this week in Union City with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williams who announced the birth of a daughter. Mrs. Miller remained over this week. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 31, 1940 RESIDENCE BURNS EARLY FRIDAY NIGHT Mr. A.J. Lane's former lovely home on the Taft Highway just outside the city limits was destroyed by fire of undetermined origin early Friday night while the senior high school play was in progress at the Franklin gym. It was too far away from city water to be saved, though the blaze had not made very considerable headway when first discovered by passers by. The house was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Buck Mooney who had not been away from home but a short while and much of their household effects were saved but all of it more or less damaged. The residence, a total loss, was partially covered by insurance but Mr. Mooney did not have any insurance. ___ GLENN Community News Miss Eunice O'Neal left for Akron, Ohio this week to visit Jim and Mrs. Hill for two weeks. ___ Carlton Hale will soon build a store at Glenn. ___ Six students of Glenn were among the graduates at Franklin, Monday. They were: Wilbur Whatley, Virginia Whitley, Martha Williams, Glover Cook, William Whitley and Jim L. Jackson. ___ CORINTH Community News Miss Sara Jackson and Joel Stephens were married May 25th. The bride is the attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.H Jackson. Misses Margaret, Mary and Jenny Jackson are her sisters; Fred and William Jackson are her brothers. Mr. Stephens is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stephens of Enon Grove. ___ Invitations have been issued to the marriage of Miss Sara Frances Gibson and Robert A. Callaway on June 11th at Dunson Methodist church at LaGrange. Miss Gibson is the daughter of Mr. hos. J. Gibson and the late Mrs. Gibson of LaGrange. Mr. Callaway is the son of Mr. and A.S. Callaway of Corinth. ____ Miss Elizabeth Zoller and A.S. Callaway Jr. were married at the house of the bride in Augusta on May 15th. Mrs. Callaway is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Zoller of Augusta. The bridegroom is the son of MR. and Mrs. A.S. Callaway of Corinth. _____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Many Heard countians can get 50 lb. cotton mattresses by organizing and signing up for them. ___ Mr. Frank W. Daniel of Okema, Okla., who is visiting his daughter Mrs. Hope Lane, was in town this week and spent quite a while with his boyhood friend and school mate, the editor. They are the same age and naturally had many things of by-gone days to talk about, things most others around never knew or could not remember. ___ Mrs. E.E. Lewis is in an Atlanta hospital for observation and treatment. Her many friends will be delighted to learn that her doctors consider her condition quite favorable for recovery. ___ We are requested to announce an all day service and decoration at New Hope, near Texas community, on the 2nd Sunday in June. All interested are requested to meet at the cemetery on Wednesday before to clean up the grounds and give needed attention to the graves. ___ Annual homecoming is announced for Prospect church at Texas community the first Sunday in June when all old settlers are expected to return for a great reunion. The cemetery and grounds are to be cleaned on Thursday before when all interested are expected to attend and work. ___ Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Staples of Canton, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Lee. Mrs. J. N. Newell and litle daughter returned with them to Canton. ___ Two fresh milk cows for sale. Mrs. S.H. Cosby, LaGrange, GA, R4. ___ It is requiring much heavy blasting of the stone in the rock hill cut for the unfinished portion of the new highway grading. It was supposed to have been almost complete when the convicts were removed some four years ago. ___ All interested in Caney Head cemetery are requested to meet there Thursday before 1st Sunday in June. The 1st Sunday in June will be homecoming day and memorial services. Everyone is invited to come. You have a special invitiation Mr. Editor, it being your old home church. J. Oscar Walls ____ Miss Allene Wilson, daughter of Mr. J.H. Wilson of Glenn, will receive her A.B. degree from Bessie Tift College on June 3rd. Miss Allene is the second daughter of Mr. Wilson to graduate from Bessie Tift, as Miss Hazel finished in 1938. Miss Allene has held various positions of honor during her college course. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Lancaster and Mrs. Kate Boddie, all of Greenville, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lancaster. __ Mr. Quentin May graduated May 27th at Rabun Gap Junior College and is now at home for vacation. ___ Mrs. Mit Wynens, for several years past an inmate of the state farm at Milledgeville died Thursday last. The body of the aged woman was brought back by relatives and buried beside her husband in Heard County. ____ Of interest to friends throughout the county is the announcement made by Mr. J.W. Walker of Roopville, of the marriage of his daughter Miss Grace Virginia Walker, to Charles F. Acree at Dalton. The ceremony was performed Tuesday May 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the parsonage in Carrollton by Rev. Kilpatrick. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Acree of Route 1, Dalton, GA.
