Ere our last notes went to press, in which we mentioned his disappearance. The Atlanta dailies carried gruesome details of the discovery of his remains by fox hunters not many miles from Atlanta. A life was taken for a car. ___ MT. PLEASANT Community News Mrs. Verna Mathews is on the sick list. __ Mrs. Jesse Arnett spent a few days last week at Shawmut, Ala., with her daughter Mary Ellen, who has been there some time under treatment for rheumatism. __ Mrs. I.E. Middlebrooks is suffering very much caused from a fall she received Friday and broke a rib or two. __ Joe Arrington and wife, and Cephus McWhorter and family of New Hope, spent Sunday with Jesse Arnett and family. __ BRUSHY CREEK Community News Leon Kirk is visiting his sister, Mrs. Elma Garrison of Atlanta. __ A host of relatives and friends were made sad to hear of the death of Elma Garrison on Sept 19th. He was a highly esteemed citizen of Atlanta. His wife, formerly miss Emeline Kirk, and two children, mourn his passing. ___ PARAN Community News Mrs. Walter Stephens spent last week with her daughter, Mrs. Oren Drummond, who has been real sick. __ Mrs. Dora Barfield's kin, with many friends, met with her Sunday in a reunion. __ Mrs. Wilford Cook was hostess to a shower in honor of Mrs. Albert Cooper, a recent bride. The honoree received many useful gifts. 25 ladies were present. Ice tea, cake and sandwiches were served. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Miss Joyce Mickle of Cohutta, is spending several weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Mickle. __ Lost - - Male dog, white feet, dark back, red sides, tip of tail white. H.W. Rushton, Roanoke, Ala. _____ Mr. C.R. Wilson advises that he has sold his farm a mile west of town to Mr. T.L. Lott, of Bowdon, and will go bck to Carroll County, where he had resided many years after first leaving Heard county. __ Mr. Harold Awbrey, who has been in the far east with the U.S. Navy for the past several years, is at home with his mother and brother for a few days, and will be stationed on his return in Philadelphia. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 11, 1940 Mr. Dickie Maddox of Atlanta, is visiting his sister, Mrs. M.T. Hawk and Family ____ ALL THINGS READY FOR DRAFT REGISTRATION FOR OCTOBER 16 Governor Rivers has fixed Wednesday, October 16 the date for registration of some 495,000 Georgians between the ages of 21 to 35 under the Conscription (Draft) Program, as a state holiday. School teachers will be used in registering the men, who will go to the school house to register. Alsabrook, Sunday, attended the birthday and family reunion of the latter's brother, Mr. H.R. Heard, at Ridley. All of the immediate family were present, most of the brothers and sisters, and a number of other relatives and friends, including four preachers to give a religious turn to the festive occasion. __ Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Lee recently attended the Walton family reunion held at Lake Raymond near Newnan. __ Eight good farm mules for sale, one combination farm and saddle horse. See Herbert Ashley, at S.F. Wyatt homeplace two miles east of Centralhatchee. __ Mr. Tom Emery, from Cullman, Ala., is back in the old home county, after an absence of some 30 years, visiting his nephew, Mr. Daniel Emory, near town. __ Mrs. W.B. Ector and Mrs. Marion Martin, with Mr. I.Q. Martin Jr., Miami, Fla., spent a day or two this week with their sister, Mrs. H.J. Mickle, who with Miss Louise Mickle returned with them to Miami to spend a few weeks. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 18, 1940 G.S. DARDEN DIES AT NEWNAN HOME Mr. G. Spence Darden, former Heard countian but for many years prominent businessman of Newnan, died Friday last and was buried Sunday at 3 p.m. at a largely attended and flower banked graveside funeral conducted by Rev. Dr. Thomas. Mr. Darden was a man of many friends and the funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever to occur in Newnan. ___ Daniel L. Hearn, 63 year old pioneer Carrollton marble and tombstone dealer, was found dead early Friday beside his automobile in front of his place of business. A coroner's jury attributed his death to natural causes, with a heart attack indicated. ____ WESLEY CHAPEL News Luther Watts, Akron, Ohio, is visiting his brother Ed. __ Sunday, Oct 3rd, Milton and Mrs. Reed celebrated the birthdays of Mrs. Reed's father, R.G. Pike, Milton Reed and granddaughter, Paula Robertson, at their home. A splendid barbecue dinner was served at noon. The day was spent in conversation and mingling with friends and relatives, many being present. ___ LEGAL NOTICE - - LEAVE TO SELL Georgia, Heard County Court of Ordinary, October Term 1940 W. E. Eley, administrator of the estate of W.T. Eley, deceased, having been duly appointed by petition to sell the lands belonging to said estate, said application will be heard at the regular term of the court of ordinary for said county to be held on the first Monday in November 1940. Williamson at Waresville. __ Mr. R.M. Barton, a former Franklinian and native Heard countian, died at LaGrange hospital the past week. Burial was at the old home church at Paran, Ala., at the Heard County line. __ Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Burson announce the birth of a son on October 13. He has been given the name Jimmie Oertelle. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 25, 1940 BETHEL Community News Mrs. Carrie Evans of Milner, spent last week with her mother, Mrs. Luke Almon, who has been sick for several weeks. __ Elton Middlebrooks was on the sick list last week. __ YELLOW DIRT Community News Milburn Dorough of Carrollton spent the weekend with home folks. __ Clifford Cash and family of Lowell, spent Saturday night with Joe and Mrs. Bonner. __ STATE LINE Community News Leo and Mrs. Shapiro from Fairfax, Ala., visited the latter's mother, Mrs. R.W. O'Neal, the weekend. __ WARESVILLE Community News Sorry to report the death of Rube Barton of LaGrange. He was buried at Paran on Monday. __ Mrs. Bunyan Pope and baby were buried a few days ago in Roanoke. Rosa Lee was a sweet girl and a devoted young christian mother. __ Mose Burden, colored, died a few days ago. He was 102 years old. He used to tell lots of things about slavery days and had his right mind all the time he was sick. __ Mrs. Annie Mae Vineyard from North Carolina, has been visiting Mrs. B.G. Hill. __ Tiny Mae Cook was married to Albert Cooper a few weeks ago. __ There was a crowd at the Crouch reunion Sunday at Lon Crouch's. __ Buel and Mrs.Pritchett of Hogansville, announce the birth of a son. __ Mr. Elton Moore continues quite feeble. __ Tiny Collins of Los Angeles, California, visited her cousin Hood Cook, several days ago. __ Wallace Cook and wife, Wilford Cook and wife and Gay Handley and wife will soon move to Pine Mountain. __ GLENN Community News Mrs. John Miller of Attala, Ala., spent the weekend with her parents, B.T. and Mrs. Adams. __ Miss Virginia Purgason of LaGrange College, spent the weekend with her grandmother, Mrs. Beulah Barrett. __ Mrs. Kiser O'Neal is visiting her sister, Mrs. Pearl Lindsey at Milstead, who is quite sick. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Dr. and Mrs. J.L. Taylor have returned from a visit to Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor in Edgefield, S.C. __ Mr. George Yavroumis spent the weekend in Memphis, Tenn., with a son, who is to be married soon. __ Dr. and Mrs. L.C. Ridley have leased the Burdett home on College Hill, and will move into it within the next few days to relieve Mrs. Burdett who will retire as school boarding house keeper.
