It was discovered a few days ago that Heard County had furnished the largest number of draftees in all of the eight states composing the Fourth Corps area. It was decided to accord a Heard County volunteer the honor of a great ovation both at home and in Atlanta with a complete private's outfit to measure. The honor fell all unexpectedly to young Clyde Odell Brown who had asked that as a volunteer he be placed at top of the list for enlistment and he was given his papers by the local board, composed of J.W. Gentry, chairman, A.J. Lane and R.L. Wilson with E.Dent Goodson, clerk. Monday afternoon, General Marion Williamson, state director selective service, and Col. Cliff Hatcher, assistant, came to Franklin with photographers who went to the Brown home, took all sorts of pictures of the young draftee's daily life and chores about the farm home and later in the evening along with the local board, Dr. J.L. Taylor, draftee examiner, W.E. Denney, director of county registration, W.C. Hill, chairman advisory board, A.J. Daniel, head of local Legion Camp, Corporal Finger, highway patrolman, and P.T. McCutchen, Editor, enjoyed a sumptious fish and barbecue supper at Legionaire Charlie Lipham's place at Five Points. Cordial welcome was extended to the ranking headquarters officers. General Williamson and Colonel Hatcher both made extended remarks relating to the manner of handling of the draft, advising that in all probability, volunteers would get to most of the places for the next two or three months and that those needed most in productive industry and in occupations furthering home defense would get deferments. They made everybody's duty in the critical days of proper preparedness perfectly clear, including the duties of the local board. Tuesday, young Brown was accorded a great ovation in Atlanta, entertained at the best hotel, feasted at the governor's mansion, seated with highest military officers, subjected to entertainment like one of royalty. But on Wednesday, the dream life was over and Clyde Odell Brown became a private in Uncle Sam's army of defense - -given all these honors prior to induction into service as an honor to Heard County and as the direct representative of thousands of other draftee volunteers who will enter the service to defend their country against invasion. The remaining 9 of the county's 10 honored volunteers reported to board yesterday, received their papers, were given a dinner by local citizens at Awbrey Cafe, and a hurrah of welcome and Godspeed as they left on the 1:35 bus for Atlanta to be inducted into service: Frederick Timmons Jackson Homer Emory Sampson Hopson Hulett Hall Evans Mack Hopson Reuben Arnold Evans Asbenry Milligan Woody John Mayfield Bell Frank Harvey Bosman ___ IMPORTANT NOTICE TO REGISTRANTS Dec 3, 1940 There have been this day mailed to you questionnaires which you are required by the Selective Service Act of 1940 to execute and return within 5 days from the date hereof.
