STERLING COOK, 78, DIES Saturday Mr. R.S. Cook, 78, lifelong resident and prominent citizen of Heard County, died at the home in Cooksville where he was born and had resided his entire life, early Saturday last after having been dismissed the day before by his physician from an attack of pneumonia. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends, amid banks of lovely flowers. Rev. V.L. Bray conducted the services, nephews acted as pallbearers and burial was in the family cemetery nearby where interments have been made for more than a hundred years. Besides his wife, three sons and three daughters survive: Albert and Miss Mary S. Cook, Atlanta; Mrs. R.W. Carr, Macon; Mrs. Robert Purgason, Robert S. Cook and Hull Cook. (bottom of page torn off so not sure if there is more of this obituary). _______ J. WESLEY GRIFFITH PASSES AT CORINTH J. Wesley Griffith, 84, died at his home in Corinth on Sunday morning after a short illness. Surviving are one sister, Miss Anna Griffith of Corinth, and a brother George Griffith of Winder. Mrs. Hugh Dowe of LaGrange is his niece. Mr. Griffith lived in and near Corinth most of his life and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a member of the Corinth Methodist church and was a Mason. Services were held at Corinth cemetery Monday at 3:30. A short talk and prayer by the Rev. V.L. Bray, his pastor, was followed by the burial ritual of the Masonic Order. ___ FORMER HEARD COUNTIAN KILLED IN CAR WRECK NEAR ROANOKE, ALA. Raymon Gilley, formerly of Heard County but more recently of Carroll, as killed Sunday night when the car in which he and two other men wee riding left the road and overturned. The accident occurred between Roanoke and Rock Mills, Ala., we are advised. Gilley is survived by a wife and three children. __ TWO FAMILIES INJURED IN AN AUTO-TRUCK COLLISION EARLY MONDAY MORNING Mr. Harvey Lee McWaters, wife and baby of Hogansville, spent Sunday at Centralhatchee with Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Eley. On their return to Hogansville early Monday, their car collided with a truck at the Brown home a mile or so west of Corinth. The impact three Mrs. McWaters out of the car and bruised her quite considerably. All of the occupants of the McWaters car were more or less shaken up and bruised. In the wrecked car were: Mr. and Mrs. H.L. McWaters and their baby, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Eley, Miss Ila Ham, Awbrey Eley and a negro girl. __ The Heard County Draft Board this week assigned three more men to training camps, two white men and one negro. The white men are: Ernest Harold Crockett and J.C. Dean, who left yesterday for Ft. McPherson. Clarence Lewis, col., will go to Fort Benning on April 8th. ___ GLENN Community News Frank Whitley, of Houston, Texas, spent Tuesday night with his parents, Clay and Mrs. Whitley. Frank was on his way to Wilmington, N.C. where he will study diesel engineering, having been called to service by the national defense. His wife and little son Jackie will join him in a few weeks. __ Joe and Mrs. Lindsey of Buffalo, Ala., were the Sunday guests of Kiser and Mrs. O'Neal. __ Whitley and Mrs. Barrett of Hogansville and Virginia Purgason of LaGrange were the Sunday visitors of Mrs. Beulah Barrett. __ Jim Crenshaw is slowly improving after being confined to his bed since January. __ COOLEY'S STORE Community News Little Lewis Caswell has been suffering with something like rheumatism in his legs. __ Milton Caswell and family spent Sunday with the family of J.B. Merrill of Centralhatchee. __ A.W. and Mrs. Layton of Columbia, S.C. spent the weekend with home folks. __ TEXAS Community News Dr. Mickle seems to be improving. Hope he can soon be in his rolling chair going around. __ Mrs. Newt Cook has been real sick but is some better. Plumer and Mrs. Sanders spent last week with her and Mrs. Dewey Jones spent a few days this week with her. __ Hoyt and Mrs. Arrington are camping at Hogansville while he is doing some building there. __ LOCAL NEWS Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Shirey of LaGrange announce the marriage of their daughter Frances Carolyn to Norman Henry Webb of Centralhatche and Columbus. The ceremony was performed in LaGrange at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, March 29th by Rev. Willis E. Howard, pastor of the First Baptist Church in LaGrange. Mr. Webb is connected with Williams Lumber Co. in Columbus. _____ The Heard County Sacred Harp Singing Convention will be held at Ephesus church in the northwest section of the county on the 1st Sunday in May and Saturday before. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Miss Edna Perry and Mr. Solon Owensby spent the weekend in Florida with sick relatives. __ Dr. Henry Faver, Tampa,Fla., has been up among his old home friends and relatives this week. __ Mr. Powers Goodson was at home from training service at Camp Stewart, spending Sunday with his mother Mrs. Eva Goodson. __ Mrs. J.L. Taylor was very much surprized Sunday last after returning from a morning drive with her son to find all of her children and grandchildren had slipped in during her absence, bringing all sorts of choice viands, and had saved her from dinner worries on her birthday. __ Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Whitaker and Miss Anne Whitaker spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Kelley of Atlanta. Mrs. M.T. Awbrey, accompanied them, spending the day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Maddox. __ Mr. Benjamin Gaddy, 97, died at his home near Corinth on March 24th. He was a member of the Corinth Baptist church and had resided in nearby Coweta County all of his life. __ Land for Sale - - Pendergrast - Armstrong farm, 202 1/2 acres, two and one half miles south east of Franklin. Higgins and wife of Newnan, brought Mrs. Higgins Sr. of Hartford, Conn. to see us Monday. __ We recently learned of the marriage at Christmas of Hewlette Yates to Miss Estelle Smith of LaGrange. Hewlette is doing well on his ship, enjoying now a promotion to chief master mechanic. __ LOCAL NEWS, GOSSIP Dent Goodson, McDonough spent Sunday with his mother Eva Goodson. __ Mr. Foster Burns, Fort Bragg, N.C. was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Burns on Saturday. __ Mrs. Margaret Talley and Mrs. Nona Skinner of Temple, Texas, granddaughters of Mrs. Foster James, 85 years of age and sister of the late Mrs. T.M. Awbrey, were guests the past week of Mrs. G.J. Whitaker and other members of the family of the late Judge T.M. Awbrey. Today, April 22nd, Willie Henry King went to Fort McPherson and tomorrow Thomas Zachary Jackson, col., goes to Fort Benning for enlistment. Men will be going nearly every week now as the calls are being made more often. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. Jack Mote near Frolona, lost his barn by fire a few night ago, losing much roughage and a horse and a mule suffered burns. __ Orin Goodson and Berrian McCutchen are improving after recent illnesses. __ Mrs. Lottie Robinson of Miami, Fla., spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs. H.J. Mickle. __ Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton and Mrs. H.E.
