Mr. Mathews escaped with only a severe shock from which he recovered in a short time. __ CAR AND OCCUPANTS WASHED 100 FEET DOWN RAGING STREAM A few days ago Mrs. Carrie Stitt, Miss Mary Drummond and two small children drove their car down to a small creek near Waresville to wash the car. The ford was just below and above a rapids over rocks. A heavy rain came, the car refused to crank, and as the stream rapidly rose the car was washed some 100 feet down the rapids, throwing the ladies and the children out into the water, from which all were miraculously saved by their own efforts. The car was not seriously damaged. __ FIVE DRAFTEES GO TO CAMPS AUGUST 15th Heard County will send four young men for the selective service August 15th, all of them being volunteers and three July 1st registrants. They are: Ben Tillman Allen J.B. Rollins Jr. Paul Herschel Jordan Raymond Benjamin Cook The four will go to Fort McPherson for assignment. Howard Benny Green, col., left this week for Fort Benning. He is a draftee. _____ FROLONA Community News Mrs. Hopie Lipham of LaGrange and Rufus Vaughan of Landale, visited L.J. and Mrs. Vaughan on Sunday. __ Mrs. Lena Thaxton and daughter Betty Jean of Carrollton are visiting A.J. Gore and family. __ Sorry to report that Mrs. Eliza Vaughan and Mrs. Gross Snyder are on the sick list. __ Mrs. Ada Barker of Gadsden, Ala, visited her mother Mrs. H.I. Cook. __ Mr. Frank Stephens Jr., Emory Academy student, is visiting his cousins, Messrs. The 64 year old encampment has always drawn large crowds of church people and homecomings and this year will be no exception with good roads and so much better and more rapid means of transportation. __ Miss Estella Pope of Hiram, spent last week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Pope. __ Mr. T.M. Davis of Waco, Texas, was the guest last week of his Aunt, Mrs. W.J. Glover and other relatives in the county. __ H.E. and Artis Green of Jacksonville, Fla., and Miss Frances Green, Atlanta, were here Sunday. It was Mr. Green's first visit to his old home county in several years. __ The annual Kitchens family reunion was held last Sunday at Waresville. Dinner was served on the lawn and a large number of relatives attended. __ Mrs. B.F. Cagle left Tuesday for Greenville, being called by the illness of her nephew, Mr. John Oswald, who is reported to have pneumonia. __ Mr. and Mrs. Elton Arnett and son Dale of Miami, Fla., have been visiting here. __ A group of relatives and friends attended the Awbrey family reunion last weekend at the family home at Mason. __ Chief and J.E. Lane and other Franklin relatives. __ Mr. A.P. Moore, Rotan, Texas, has been visiting relatives in the county the past week, paying his first visit to his native county in nearly fifty years. Though now an octogenarian he looks almost as young and handsome as when he left Heard county a half century ago. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, August 29, 1941 Mrs. Pearlie East of Carrollton has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Kramer Denney. __ DIED - - Mr. N.L. Caswell, 85, former Heard countian, died at Bowdon, GA on Saturday last, and was buried Sunday at the Foster - Caswell burial place just west of the river. He was born and reared in Heard County and lived here practically all of his life, leaving only a few years ago. Two sons, Mr. Nath Caswell and Mr. Otis Caswell still reside in the county. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. Stover from over in Alabama spent the weekend with his daughter, Mrs. S.A. Napier. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Boggus announced the marriage of their daughter Sybil Osborne to Herbert Crawford Johnson of Atlanta. The marriage was an event of June 27th. __ Mrs. Virginia Robertson, Ojus, Fla; Mrs. W.H. Daniel, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Daniel. Mrs. Cammie Thomas, Newnan, was their guest Sunday. __ Mr. Lewis Thompkins is visiting relatives in Akron, Ohio. __ Mr. Raymond Awbrey spent a few days last week in Kentucky. __ Mr. and Mrs. Q.E. Bell, Centralhatchee, announce the birth of a daughter Friday Aug 22. She has been given the name Brenda SueEllen. Mrs. Bell was formerly Miss Eunice Bledsoe and taught at Franklin High School. __ Dr. and Mrs. J.L.
