Thompson and Charlie Mickle Arrington, are all white, first quota men to be inducted into the service; all are draftees. Thus far, all of the other men to enter service from Heard County had been volunteers. __ Jim L. Jackson left Sunday for Charleston, S.C., where he has a job at the navy yard. __ WARESVILLE Community News Mrs. Mary Moore is spending awhile with her daughter Mrs. Holderfield in Stroud, Ala. __ Mrs. Wyatt Wingo from near Anniston, Ala., spent several days last week with her sister, Mrs. J.H. Kitchens. __ Mr. White from Honolulu, spent a few days this week with his sister, Mrs. Anderson. He will be at Norfolk, VA several months repairing ships and then go to Iceland. __ J.H. Kitchens lost his cotton stamps, so went to Mayhayley. She told him that they were in the fireplace. So he returned home, looked in the fireplace and there they were, and was he glad. __ Morgan and Mrs. Drummond, Fonzy and Mrs. Janney and Laler Janney attended the fair in Atlanta on Sunday. __ Lamar Meacham was in a Roanoke hospital in very serious condition, and he later died. __ Mr. J.H. KENT PASSES AFTER STROKE on TUESDAY Mr. J.H. Kent, 43, died somewhat suddenly on Tuesday a.m. after an apoplectic stroke, the second he had suffered in several weeks. A native of Milltown, Alabama, Mr. Kent had resided here for a number of years, and was a painter by profession, many lovely jobs having been handled by him, both here and in nearby cities. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Wednesday at 3 p.m., conducted by Rev. J.C.Adams, with Lewis & Lipford as directors, and interment was in the city cemetery. Survivors are Mrs. Kent, a son and daughter, James Kent, stationed at Ft. McPherson, a daughter, Minnie Ann Kent, Carrollton; father, A.J. Kent, Roopville; three sisters, Mrs. A.L. Lecroy, Lanett, Ala; Mrs. Seaborn Jackson; Mrs. Lois Brazeal, Jacksonville, Fla; three brothers, Dewey Kent, Fort Bragg, N.C., Otis Kent, Lanett, Ala; Melvin Kent, Heard County. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. Ed Settles, of Winder, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Paschal. __ Lieut. and Mrs. C.C. McCutchen, Moulton, Ala., spent the weekend with homefolks, attending press day at the S.E. Fair on Saturday. __ Mr. Del Axe, Canton, Ohio, spent last weekend with Mr. Lewis Tompkins at Whispering Pines, and left Sunday to visit Mr. Kyle Tompkins at Camp Shelby, Miss. __ NEWSPAPER issue of October 10, 1941 Mr. LON GEORGE DIES SUDDENLY GOING TO HOUSE FROM HAY FIELD As we go to press, Mr. Charlies Bryant, a neighbor, brings to town the news that Mr. Lon George, well known citizen and farmer of the northwest section of the county, died Thursday as he went from a hay field to his house for implements. When he did not return his son finally started to the house himself and found his father cold in death beside the passageway not far from where they had been working. It is presumed that he died of heart failure. ___ W.E. McDOWELL DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Mr. W.E. McDowell, 53, well known invalid of a number of years, died at his home near town Saturday morning, October 4th. Funeral and interment were at Prospect, conducted by Rev. J.C. Adams, with Lewis & Lipford, directors. Surviving are the widow and five sons; Brown, Walter, Bonnie, John H. and Edward McDowell, all residing in Heard county except Walter, who resides in LaGrange. ___ Forrest Turner and Slim Scarborough, escaped convicts, Friday raided a Harris county work camp, released some 40 convicts and kidnapped engineer Claude Almon of Heard County and guard Neil Hutchinson of Meriwether county. Officers and state patrolmen got hot in behind them and by noon Saturday the culprits had been captured and placed behind bars at Moultrie. Almon and Hutchison were held in the woods near Columbus until about Friday night when they were released unharmed. Mr. Almon is a nephew of Commissioner Z.P. Almon who with Sheriff Bledsoe and his father, Mr. Grady Almon, went to the scene Friday night. ___ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. Robert Manor, Marietta, spent last week with her sister, Mrs. H.E. Burdett. __ The Coweta County Sacred Harp Singing Convention will meet at the courthouse in Newnan Oct 18th and 19th. W.T. Brittain, President _____ Mr. and Mrs. Odie Holsombeck, Mrs. W.W. Lipham, Miss Kate Lipham and Bill Lipham spent Sunday in Cullman, Alabama with Mrs. Lipham's sister who is 87 years old. __ Dr. J.L. Taylor with the family, on Friday attended the funeral of his brother, Mr. R.E. Taylor, 75, who died Thursday after a long suffering illness of a spinal carbuncle. __ Mr. and Mrs. George Nix were called to Alexander City, Ala, a few days ago to visit the former's father, who has been ill. __ Flying cadet Jim Bolen, West Palm Beach, Fla., was here a few days this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Val Taylor of Nashville, Tenn., have been guests of Dr. and Mrs. Taylor. Miss Jnoella Taylor, Atlanta, was also called home to attend the funeral of her Uncle, Mr. R.E. Taylor at Roanoke, Ala. __ Mrs. Raymond Awbrey left Wednesday for a visit to her parents at Campton, Kentucky. __ LEGAL NOTICE - - Administration Georgia, Heard County To all whom it may concern: G.E. Kirk having in proper form applied to me for permanent letters of administration on the estate of Lizzie Kirk, late of said county, this is to cite all and singular creditors and next of kin for Lizzie Kirk to be and appear at my office within the time allowed by law and show cause, if any they can, why permanent administration should not be granted to G.E. Louise Sledge, Ordinary _____ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, October 17, 1941 Sheriff Bledsoe had a tip that some Atlanta moonshiners were operating a whiskey plant at the north line of the county. Contacting Sheriff Kilgore of Carroll county, resulted in a raid and the finding of two 1000 gallon outfits just over the line in Carroll County. ______ With a band playing DIxie and Yankee Doodle, Gov. Talmadge on Tuesday accepted on behalf of the State of Georgia, a bullet riddled Confederate flag returned to Georgia by the state of Michigan. __ The marriage on Saturday of Miss Julia Wesley Lane and J.W. Wray Jr. is announced. The ceremony was quietly solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Lance, brother and sister of the bride with Dr. W. Lee Cutts pastor of the Capital View Baptist church, Atlanta, officiating. Dr. A.J. Lane and Messrs. Mort and Charlie Lane are brothers of the bride. _____ Mr. Myrle Bell and Miss Armelie Anderson were united in marriage on Monday night at the Methodist parsonage, Rev. J.C. Adams officiating. The popular young couple left immediately after the ceremony for Fairburn where Mr. Bell is connected with an NYA job. ___ MT. PLEASANT Community News Jesse Arnett and family spent Sunday with Mrs. Joe Arrington and family near New Hope. __ We are sorry to say that Mrs. J.T. Nelms is not doing well at this writing. __ Mrs. C.H. Combs and daughter Martha, spent the weekend with Mrs. Whitley Lester. __ We were so sorry to hear of the death of our friend, Lige Caswell, caused from a car wreck last Friday. We extend the bereaved our sincere sympathy. __ GLENN Community News I.Q. and Mrs. Adams Jr. are the proud parents of a daughter. Mrs. Adams and baby came home Friday from Bonner Hospital. __ Mrs. Henry Williams Jr. expects her brother and sister, R.E. Foster and Mrs. Foster of Portland, Oregon to arrive Monday and spend two weeks. Mr. Foster hasn't made a trip home in 9 years. __ Frank Laws arrived home last week from Utah. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Arrington, and Mr. Bradley Arrington of Akron, Ohio, are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington. __ Mr. Wilson Awbrey is tearing away the old Wright house on his recently purchased lot on south College street preparatory to grading the grounds and erecting a handsome home for which he has plans. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 24, 1941 TWO HEARD COUNTY DISCHARGEES RE-ENLIST Privates Charlie M. Arrington of Franklin, GA and Combie J. Talley also of Franklin are being discharged to re-enlist in the regular army for three years. Arrington will re-enlist unassigned and Talley will re-enlist in the Air Corps for duty at Wichita Falls, Texas. Both men were accepted for induction from the Heard county local board. __ We were sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Lige Caswell. He was in a car wreck and died in the hospital in Atlanta. We learn that his wife is in bad health. __ Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Lipford of Franklin, announce the engagement of their daughter Emily Camille to McDonald Staples of Roopville and Leslie, the marriage to take place in November. __ Mrs. Enoch Callaway Sr., 83, died Sunday at noon at her home in LaGrange of a heart ailment from which she has suffered for a number of years. She had been seriously ill for the past weeks. __ J.C. and Mrs. Tony are the proud parents of a baby girl. __ COOLEY's STORE Community News Mrs. Lucy Griffith and children of LaGrange spent Sunday with C.A. Caswell and family. __ TWO DAY COURT TRIES A NUMBER OF CASES Monday and Tuesday were busy days in Heard Superior Court, the cases coming from regular term in September. The first indictment called was the State vs. Wallace Sheppard and Lonnie Ogletree as operators of a night club near the Troup line at Potato Creek. Sheppard went on trial. There was a large array of witnesses, most of them from LaGrange. The charge was operating gambling devices but much other damaging evidence was brought out in course of the trial. One of the operators of the placed seemed to boast of liquor being sold over the counters in any quantity the customer wanted. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and Judge Wyatt imposed a fine of $1000. with a year in work camp and six months in jail, the latter suspended on payment of fine and good behavior. Motion for new trial was made. Houston Pullen operating gambling devices; verdict of guilty, fine $250. and 12 months with 6 in jail, both suspended on payment of fine and good behavior. Motion for new trial was made. In the following cases, no evidence except allowing gambling machine to be put in their places of business, pleaded guilty and were given minimum fine of $25 each: Lee Hill J.E. Burson T.E. Owensby P.C. Whitley J.S. Tompkins T.O. Yates Homer Russell; possessing liquor, 25. and 12 months suspended on payment of fine and good behavior White Lane; operating gambling device; $100. and 12 months with six months in jail, both suspended on payment of fine and good behavior R.B. Hyatt, operating gambling device; $75. and 12 months with 6 in jail, both suspended on payment of fine and good behavior C.F. Lipham; operating gambling device; $75. and 12 months, 6 in jail, both suspended on good behavior _______ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton and Mr. and Mrs. Condie Simonton were recent guests of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Simonton in LaFayette. __ Mrs. Taylor Green and daughters Susan and Margaret of Sarasota, Fla., were guests of Mrs. Stanton Adams this week. __ The friends of Mrs. W.M. Paschal sympathize with her in the loss of her sister, Mrs. Jennie Betterton. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, October 31, 1941 Dr. and Mrs. Albert Glenn Wortham announce the engagement of their daughter, Fannie Gordon to Roy Downs of El Portal, California, the marriage to be solemnized at an early date. The bride-to-be is a young woman of magnetic personality. She finished high school at Carrollton A & M after which she continued her education at the GA State College for Women at Milledgeville. She is a graduate of the GA Baptist hospital training school for nurses. She is descended from prominent southern families. Her mother was Ora Lee Miller, daughter of Willis Miller and Fannie Gordon Saunders. She bears the name of her maternal grandmother who was a member of prominent Gordon families of McDonough and Griffin and the Saunders families of Butts county. The late John Chilton Wortham and Mary Elizabeth Watts were her paternal grandparents, their families beng prominent representive families of Georgia. The bride elect's sisters are: Mrs. C.S. Heard, Roanoke, Ala; Miss Sara Wortham, LaGrange. Her brothers are Glenn Wortham Jr., Port Arthur, Texas and Hollis Wortham, Centralhatchee. The groom elect is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.R. Downs of Egypt, Arkansas. He is a graduate of Walnut Ridge, Ark., high school. He is also a graduate of Jonesboro Baptist College and Arkansas State College. At present he holds a responsible position with the shell Oil Company of Fresno, Calif. After a wedding trip through southern California and Mexico, the couple will reside in El Portal, Calif. ______ PARAN Community News On October 11th, death came to relieve the suffering of Walter Stephens. He had been ill for several months. He was a good neighbor and a good citizen. He leaves a wife and five children. __ Elma Stephens and family recently moved to Wedowee. __ Mrs. Walter Stephens will make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Orin Drummond in Roanoke. __ Ledford Cook and family have recently moved to Pine Mountain. __ Joe Brown and wife of Roanoke, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Press Tollerson. __ FROLONA Community News Lee Farmer visited his father at Kansas last weekend. __ Hardy and Mrs. Arrington announce the birth of a son Oct 23. __ Herman Harris of Phenix City, Ala., visited his parents here last weekend. __ A.J. Gore of Akron, Ohio is visiting his family here this week. __ Hulet Nation of Camp Wheeler, visited his parents, V.M. and Mrs. Nation last weekend. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. J.H. Mooney entered a hospital in Atlanta for treatment on Wednesday. __ Mr. W.M. Culpepper has gone to Alto for special treatment for an aggravating cough. __ Mr. W.F. Hill, aged father of Tax Commissioner W.C.
