Lesley. __ ELERY Community News Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Marshall recently visited Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney at Alma, Georgia. __ Pvt. Dorsey Denney is visiting his parents for a few days. __ Mr. and Mrs. Weems McIntosh and little daughter from Mobile, Ala., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. L.O. McIntosh. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ben McWhorter and Peggy, and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Barker and Nancy of Tamp, Fl., are visiting relatives. Mr. McWhorter and Mr. Barker returned to their work Wednesday while their families will remain through Mother's Day. __ The friends of Mrs. L.W. Denney are happy that she is improving at the Villa Rica hospital. __ Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Caswell of Mobile, Ala., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Barker last week. __ STATE LINE Community News Mr. and Mrs. Henry Williamson announce the birth of a daughter on Friday, April 30th. __ Mrs. Sallie Homer and grandson of LaGrange, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Hunter. __ Sgt. Elmer J. Adamson of Camp Blanding, Florida spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Adamson. __ Mrs. Don Yarbrough is spending awhile with her son, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Yarbrough of LaGrange, and under the treatment of Dr. Callaway. __ CENTRALHATCHEE Community News Mrs. Harvey Wright and children are spending a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner. __ Mrs. Herbert Jackson and three children, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Windom and stepdaughter of Newnan, visited their mother, Mrs. Joe Merrill Saturday last. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ben Eley Jr. announce the birth of a son on April 25th. __ HOME NEWS Pfc. Thomas Lane of Washington, D.C. is on furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brewer Lane. __ Mrs. O.W. Burns and children leave Friday for Clearwater, Fla;, to join Lieut. Burns stationed there. Berrien McCutchen accompanied them for a visit of a day or two. They drove through in Liet. Burns car. __ Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Snyder and Lloyd Jr. arrived Saturday from Atlanta to visit Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Lipford. Mrs. Snyder and Lloyd Jr. are staying over for the week. __ Mrs. Wilson Awbrey and little daughter Martha are visiting Mrs. Roy Green in Opelika, Ala. __ Mr. and Mrs. Sam Whatley visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington over the weekend. __ Mrs. W.T. Crockett of Bremen is spending awhile with her daughter, Mrs. Lee Edgeworth. Mr. and Mrs. Edgeworth recently became welcome residents of Franklin. __ Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Hines and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Word of Hogansville, spent awhile in Franklin Sunday enroute home from Simpson where they attended homecoming and decoration day at their old home church at Salem. Rev. B.W. Kilpatrick, former pastor was the guest preacher. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 14, 1943 MRS. W.W. FAVER PASSES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS Mrs. Walter W. Faver, 70, died at the home in Franklin about 9 o'clock Tuesday evening, as her condition appeared to be improved. She was born and reared in Heard County, a daughter of the lamented Joe T. Tackson and was an outstanding and lovable christian woman. She was a member of the Baptist church at Centralhatchee where funeral and interment was held Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, services conducted by pastor Rev. G.W. Jones and Lewis & Lipford as directors. Surviving are her husband, six sons and four daughters; Lewis, Lem, Hamp, Hope and Howard Faver of Atlanta; Horace Favor of Newnan; Mrs. Clara Hamilton of Talladega; Mrs. Clyde Nutt of Newnan; Mrs. Bertha Key of Columbus; Mrs. Josie Adams of Franklin. __ CENTRALHATCHEE Community News Friends of Mrs. Ruby McLendon are sorry to know that her father continues seriously ill. __ Pft. Ned Jackson spent his furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Jackson. __ Mrs. Sam Gibbs and daughter Sandra of Atlanta visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Jackson last week. __ Rev. and Mrs. Charlie Heard and children visited their parents, Dr. and Mrs .A.G. Wortham Saturday night. __ ELERY Community News Mr. and Mrs. Homer White and several relatives of Clem, dined with Mr. and Mrs. Alma Walls on Sunday. __ J.B. Wright and family of Hogansville spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Folds. __ Grandpa Strickland of Columbus, died and his body was brought to the home of his son, L.Y. Strickland. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Macedonia. __ ROCKALO Community News Mrs. Roy Strickland died at a hospital Monday last. __ Pvt. Harvey Calhoun and wife from Texas, were visiting the latter's mother here on day recently. __ Jesse Hart and family, together with Beatrice and Quentella Freeman, visited Will Thaxton and family recently. __ Mamie Thaxton is on the sick list. __ HOME NEWS Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Etchison of Fairfax, Ala., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Paschal on Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Sam Whatley of LaGrange, and Mr. Bradley Arrington of Atlanta, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Arrington. __ Oren Goodson and Ralph Denney left Monday for Brunswick where they have employment. __ DIED - - Ben S. Orr, 65, prominent merchant, farmer, fruit grower and banker died at Newnan on Tuesday. He was well known and highly esteemed by hosts of friends in Heard County. __ Sgt. and Mrs. Byrd Blair of Washington, D.C., will arrive this week for a visit to the latter's parents, Supt. and Mrs. Williams. __ Mr. H.H. Shackleford is back home much improved after several months in Florida. __ DIED - - Mr. Frank Chambers, beloved citizen of Tyus, died after a long illness on Tuesday. He was the father of Mrs. Ernest McClendon, popular teacher at Centralhatchee. __ Mr. Frank C. Lumpkin of Tyler, Texas, spent a day or two this week with his sister, Mrs. V.O. Smith, and shaking hands with his many boyfriend friends in Franklin. __ Tech. Sgt. and Mrs. Bulan Dail, from Cochran Field, Macon, Georgia spent the weekend visiting friends in Franklin and Mrs. Onnie Davis of Hogansville. Sgt. Dail is a soldier of the old school, having served eight and a half years in the Army. Dail soldiered on the Mexican border and he came to Cochran Field from Panama. Mrs. Dail will be remembered as Miss Tommie Futral, formerly of Franklin. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 23, 1943 WILLIAM J. BAILEY KILLED BY UNKNOWN AUTO WED. NIGHT Wm. J. Bailey, 85, was struck and killed by a hit and run car about 9:00 Wednesday night on Highway U.S. 27 a mile south of Centralhatchee. The old man, feeble both in body and mind, passed Franklin late in the afternoon and was said to be making his way from a daughter's home in LaGrange to that of another in Randolph County, Ala. A son-in-law, A.P. Arrington from Randolph, came to town early yesterday to arrange for funeral with Lewis & Lipford, to be held over in Alabama. Parties near by heard the impact and on investigation discovered the body. An inquest was held by Coroner Leslie about 12 o'clock, reporting death by being struck by an unknown car. The body was terribly broken, the neck, hip, both arms and legs broken with other frightful bruises, indicating that the car was going at a terrific rate of speed. __ MRS. HOPE H. LANE PASSES TO REWARD Mrs. Howard Birdsong Lane, widow of the late Hope H. Lane, died Saturday night at the home of her niece, Mrs. Emmet Clark, in LaGrange, where she had gone a few days before on account of failing health, apparently passing to sweet reward as she slept. The funeral was held at Hammett and Groover's beautiful funeral chapel Tuesday morning at 10:00 with interment in the family lot in Hill View Cemetery. Mrs. Lane had spent most if not all of her life in Franklin, where she had a host of friends. She was 72 years of age, a member of the Franklin Methodist church and of the WSCS and had been in declining health for some time, but no one expected the dissolution so soon. She had no children. Funeral services in the absence of her pastor, in Wisconsin, were conducted by District Supt. George L. King who resides in LaGrange. She was the last of the immediate large and popular Birdsong family. ____ CAPT. JERE WELLS KILLED IN VIRGINIA AIRPLANE CRASH Captain Jere A. Wells Jr., son of Jere A. Wells, Fulton County superintendant of schools, was killed early Saturday afternoon when his airplane crashed into a mountain side near Roanoke, VA. His parents were notified by the War Department. Captain Wells, who was 24 years old, was attached to Shaw Field and lived with his wife, the former Lucille Dennison. Captain Wells was piloting the plane. He had been in the Army Air Corps since October 1941 and received his wings at Maxwell Field. He was flight commander at Shaw Field. Surviving him in addition to his wife and parents are two sisters, Carolyn and Elena Wells and two brothers, Robert Edwin and Ensign George Wells, U.S. N. Funeral services were held in Atlanta. Captain Wells was a grandson of Mrs. Lena H. Cox of Heard County. ___ ELERY Community News We are indeed sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Elim Eley, who was born and reared in this community and loved by all who knew him. __ Pfc. Hulett White visited his brother and sister, J.B. White and Mrs. Alma Walls last Monday. __ Pfc. James E. Barker is stationed at Sioux Falls, South Dakota instead of South Carolina. __ Mrs. Ben McWhorter,and Mrs. Ted Barker and little daughters, who spent two weeks with parents here returned to their homes in Tampa, Florida. __ LEGAL NOTICE - - Administraton Georgia, Heard County To all whom it may concern: Thomas W. Mickle at their lovely Texas community home. __ Mrs. J.L. Daniel, Mrs. Ezra Heard and Jackie Heard spent Sunday at Camp McClellan, Ala., the guests of Pfc. Randolph Uzzell, son of the former Miss Grace Butler of Wilson, N.C. a sister of Mrs. Daniel. __ Mr. John Arrington who has been employed in Hogansville, has been at home in Heard County on his leave after induction, left yesterday for Fort McPherson for assignment. __ Mrs. B.H. Dixon of Ferris, Texas, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Amanda Gibson near town. Mrs. Dixon will be remembered as the popular Miss Blanche Gibson and has not been back in the old home for several years. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 28, 1943 WARESVILLE Community News Shirley Sanders from Camp Jackson, S.C. came home for several days. __ Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen have moved to his father's place. __ Tennie and Kathleen Almon spent the weekend last near Griffin with their sister, Mrs. Carrie Evans. __ We are sorry to learn of the death of Homer Pittman's son of Wehadkee, who was killed in action. __ Jim Cook of Texas died a few weeks ago; also Frank O'Neal of Texas. This the 24th day of May 1943. Eula Rogers, applicant. ____ INCREASED COFFEE RATION AUTHORIZED Coffee drinkers received good news Monday from the Office of Price Administration. The next allotment will be the largest since the rationing started. Stamp No. 24, valid until May 31st, will provide for one pound of coffee through June 30th, or for 30 days. Previously the ration has never exceeded one pound for five weeks. Once it dropped to one pound for six weeks. _______ SAME SUGAR RATION ANNOUNCED NEXT PERIOD The current sugar ration will remain unchanged in the next ration period beginning June 1st. Sugar stamp No. 13 in Ration Book No. 1 will bcome valid June 1st and will be good for five pounds of sugar through August 15th. This maintains the current ration of 5 pounds of sugar for a period of two and one half months. ____ UNITED STATES REPORTS LOSS OF 80,000 MEN IN PAST 17 MONTHS The armed forces of the United States have lost more than 80,000 men in battle casualties in 17 months of war. This total will be increased probably by about 5,000 officers said Monday, as reports not yet compiled for the last four weeks of the Tunisian campaign add to the Army's list of killed, wounded and missing. Since the war began, the Navy has reported 23,955 casualties in the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard; 7,128 killed, 4,683 wounded and 12,054 missing. Army casualties reported through May 7th, total 56,942; 6,076 killed, 12,277 wounded, 24,345 missing, 14,244 reported prisoners. Of the wounded, 4000 have returned to duty or recovered sufficiently to be discharged from hospitals. These Army totals include two lists made public Monday, containing the names of more than 1,000 soldiers wounded in the European, North African, Middle eastern, Pacific and Southwest Pacific theatres. Approximately 900 of these were in North Africa. A total of 4,555 Merchant Marine casualties since September was reported Sunday by the Navy. ______ Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Harbuck announce the marriage of their daughter Mary Jewell, of Ft. Valley and Atlanta, GA to Henry Arthur Foster of Centralhatche and Augusta, GA. Mr. Foster, a medical student intends to return to Heard County after he finishes his education if the war is over. Miss Mary Jewell Harbuck taught at Centralhatchee for two years, 1939 - 41. Mr. Foster will continue his work at the Medical College. __ ROCKALO Community News Hutt South and family from Bowdon, have been visiting relatives here recently. __ Caylor Talley with the armed forces, visited his parents last Sunday. __ Mrs. Panzy Judas and children are visiting relatives at Columbus. __ HOME NEWS Dr. White Brock and Dr. A.J. Lane have been suffering of acute rheumatism for the past weeks. Dr. Brock has gone to Hot Springs for rest and treatment and expects to return to his office within about 3 or 4 weeks. __ Pvt. John Oswald was at home the past week from his station in New Hampshire. __ FOR SALE - - The Lucy J. Scrivens home place located on College Street in Franklin, GA. Contact Wright Lipford, LaGrange, GA. ___ Mr. W.W. Faver had most of his children with him the past weekend, dividing up his household trinkets among them after the death of their mother. __ The ban of fishing with hook and line will be over in a few days. Then sleepy anglers may be able to bid defiance to the meat ration coupons. Fish for meat, blackberry pie sweetened with syrup and victory garden vegetables will furnish meals fit for kings anyhow. Let's not worry about rationing. And we don't need gasoline to walk up and down the fishing streams. ____ A telegram announcing the serious illness of his son, Pvt. Thomas Lane, caused Mr. T. B.
