The robbery was committed at John Robert Orr's filling station on Greenville street on the night of October 15th and Sheriff Potts arrested the two men a day or two later after they had first denied any knowledge of the crime but later confessing after the sheriff uncovered evidence of their guilt. Cumby had a newly purchased car and when Sheriff Potts asked him when he got the car he said he bought it from Teel. This was the first time Teel's name had come into the case and he and Cumby were lodged in jail. Teel was released on bond on Friday Oct 22nd and on Saturday the sheriff went to Carrollton and located one of the gas books in the possession of R.C. Yancey. When questioned, Yancey said he had stolen the book from Cumby. He said that Cumby had concealed the books in one of the hub caps of his car and that later, he, Yancey had pried the cap off and had stolen the book. When he was confronted with Yancey's statement, Cumby admitted having sold some of the books in LaGrange on the night of the robbery. Those books have not yet been recovered. In addition to the books still in the hub cap of Cumby's car, the sheriff went back to the robber's home in Carrollton last Sunday and found more of them hidden there. Cumby was employed by Bradley Wilkinson Lumber Company and Teel was employed by Callaway Mills of LaGrange.
