Mrs. Hood Cook is also down with the flu. Mrs. J.H. Kitchens has been sick over a week with flu. Mrs. Badney Hill and Deama have been spending several weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Elton Middlebrooks. Mr. Middlebrooks has been sick. Mr. Sam Arnett is home much improved after spending several weeks with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson spent Sunday in Hogansville. Mr. Elam Smith has been seriously ill but is improving. Several people around here attended the funeral of Mrs. Lee, the mother of M.F. Lee. Paul Boggus of California is expected home in a few days. Frank Allen is at home from Brunswick. Mr. John Lucas is very feeble. Mrs. Elton Moore is spending several days with her daughter Mrs. Halderfield. W.T. Wingo is at home for a few days. Henry Wingo left to go into the service a few days ago. Mr. and Mrs. Posey Wingo have moved into the Walter Cook home. Mrs. Tom Sanders spent several days with Mr. and Mrs. Grover Middlebrooks last week. Carl Crouch and family have moved back from Pine Mountain. Sorry to report that Mrs. Ledford Cook is seriously ill. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Piper and baby from Savannah are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Mulkey and attended the funeral of his brother Guy, who was buried on Monday. _________ ROCKALO News Charlie Bryan underwent an operation for appendicitis at Roanoke Hospital Monday last. Mr. and Mrs. Levi Noles and boys visited relatives in LaGrange last Sunday. Mrs. Emma Grizzard is very ill at present. Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Hull visited the latter's parents recently at LaGrange. Her brother Owen was at home on furlough, expecting soon to be shipped overseas. Caylor Talley and wife and baby of LaGrange visited his father and sister Sunday last. _________ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Sherman Eley and little Mickey are back with us after a long visit with her father. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Lee McWaters and children of Hogansville visited Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Eley on Sunday. Harvey Lee has been assigned to the Navy. Durwood Norwood, who is in the Navy, is stationed in Maryland. Mrs. M.E. Wyatt and daughters, Mrs. Olin Downs of Bowdon and Mrs. Bertha Mae Reed of Texas, spent last week at the Wyatt home. __________ JANUARY INDUCTEES ACCEPTED FOR ARMY AND NAVY SERVICE During the month of January the following men from Heard County have been inducted into the armed forces: Army: Christopher C. Mrs. Clarence Heard of Omaha, Ala., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arrington. Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Wilson announce the birth of a daughter at the Knight Sanitorium in Roanoke, Ala. Mrs. Wilson is the former Letha Gore. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Hester and children of Hillcrest, visited Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Noles Sunday last. Mrs. V.M. Nations, Mrs. John Noles and Mr. H.C. Phillips visited Mrs. Elgin Nation of Double Spring, Ala., who has been real sick in a hospital there. _______ GLENN News The death of Guy Piper came as a shock to his many friends. He is the son of H.H. and Mrs. Piper. Mrs. Ralph Williams and son left Wednesday for Fort Myers, Fla., where they will make their home. Cpl. Williams is stationed there. Lipham Jr. of Cartersville, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Lipham, Sr. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, February 11, 1944 PAL LANE DIES AT PENSACOLA, FLA. P.A. Lane, 42, former Franklinian, died at his home in Pensacola, Fla., Tuesday night after a short illness, the family here has been notified. He is survived by his wife and three children: Ruby, Virginia and Allen Lane of Pensacola, Fla.; his father R.J. Lane of Franklin; two brothers and one sister, Alton and Whit Lane of Franklin; Mrs. Mack Bunn of Atlanta; one uncle G.J. Whitaker of Franklin. As we go to press, we are not advised as to funeral arrangements. _______ NICK NORTH DIES IN NEWNAN Nicholas Lamar North, 73, former state senator, died at his home Thursday night. A retired banker, Mr. North served as state bank examiner for many years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was in the state senate in 1929-30. Born in Senoia, he was the son of the late Dr. A.C. North and Mrs. Martha Yates Bailey North. Surviving are his wife the former Carrie L. Gibson, two daughters, Miss Louisa North and Mrs. Glenn Ware; one son, Gibson L. North; one sister, Mrs. B.F. Cole Sr.; and one brother, H.H. North of Newnan. _______ RIDGEWAY News Sgt. Hulet Nations of Camp Wheeler, GA, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V.M. Nations, last week. Pvt. Huell Hill of Colorado is spending a 21 day furlough with his wife and twin daughters and Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Hill. Misses Ona Prestridge and Rosie Mae Cash visited Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Arrington of Forest Home, Ala., last weekend. Mrs. Pearl Allen and daughters Una and Edell of Atlanta, visited Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Burgess Sunday last. Mrs. Paul Cherry and Mrs. Julius Curtiss of LaGrange visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Sheets last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Sheets of LaGrange visited relatives here last weekend. Mrs. Minnie Arrington, Mr. and Mrs. Birl Arrington and little Betty Jean visited Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Arrington of Forest Home, Ala., Sunday last. _________ CORINTH News Mr. and Mrs. Chad Callaway have been spending several days with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Callaway, before his induction into the service on the 12th. Mrs. Homer Darden is improving after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. J.S. Jackson is spending several weeks in Atlanta with her daughter, Mrs. P.H. Randall. Mr. and Mrs. James Webb plan to move to Atlanta in the near future, where they have positions. Corinth will regret very much to lose this popular couple. _______ STATE LINE News Mrs. Lit Hunter is real sick. We hope for her a speedy recovery. Walter Jackson and wife of Waresville spent Saturday with their daughter, Mrs. James Laws. Sidney Dollar of the Navy, and wife of Miami, Fla., and also Miss Ruby Whitley of Columbus, spent several days with their parents, T.J. and Mrs. Whitley recently. Mrs. Newman Davis of Wilmington, Calif., is back to stay with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.G. Golden. ________ CENTRALHATCHEE News Little Ruth Vaughan died Sunday afternoon at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Turner Sr., and was laid to rest here Monday. We extend sympathy to the bereaved. Mrs. Beulah Denney and children of Hogansville spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Eley Sr. Mrs. Marion Pittman of LaGrange spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Jackson. Tom Davis has been very sick recently we are sorry to report. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Faver are back with us again after living in Atlanta and Michigan for quite a while. _________ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Officer J.J. Arrington has been making it hot for illicit distillers lately. During recent days he has captured and destroyed several large stills and large quantities of beer in various distilling fixtures. Two soldier brothers, Pvt. Emmett D. Veal from Camp Mackall, N.C. and Pvt. Harvey H. Veal from Camp Rucker, Ala., are spending a few days with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Sgt. Bruce L. Taylor has been promoted to Staff Sergeant; also he was recently awarded a medal for good conduct and excellent services rendered in the 788 Bomb. Squadron AAB, Wendover Field, Utah. _____ MT. PLEASANT News I.E. Middlebrooks is not doing so well for the past week and went back to LaGrange to the doctor on Monday. Mrs. Mattie Kirk is spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. Brown Kitchens. ______ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, February 25, 1944 DR. HULETT HALL ASKEW DIED IN ATLANTA HOSPITAL Dr. Hulett Hall Askew, 51, prominent physician of 1329 Springdale Rd. NE, Atlanta, died Sunday in a private hospital, following a heart attack. Dr. Askew was the son of the late Chas. O. Askew and Ada Daniel Askew, both reared at Franklin, where he has many relatives, hosts of friends and numbers of patients whom he has served professionally. Dr. A.J. Lane, Capt. A.J. Daniel, Mrs. E.A. Lipford and Mr. J.L. Daniel, cousins, attended the funeral Wednesday in Atlanta. _______ RIDGEWAY News Mr. and Mrs. Ben Davis of South Georgia, visited their father, W.C. Arrington, Sunday last. Mr. and Mrs. John Harwell visited Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Alsabrook of Wehadkee, Ala., Sunday last. _________ HEARD COUNTY SOLDIER WINS MEDALS IN THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC Sgt. and Mrs. S.C. Shelnutt are at home on delay enroute from the Southwest Pacific to Salt Lake City for reassignment. Sgt. Shelnutt has seen two years of active service in that area and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.J. Shelnutt, and many of his friends are delighted to see and talk to him of his many experiences. He wears a medal for rescuing men from a burning crashed plane and an air medal for participating in more than 25 combat missions. He was in the Phillipine campaign fighting as well as in many missions in other southwest pacific area maneuvers and battles. _______ TEXAS Community News This community was made sad when they received the news that Mrs. Anna McClain had passed away. She was loved here where she spent part of the time with her daughter Mrs. Ethel Turner. She died at Mrs. Layman Yates' in LaGrange. She was buried at Glenn last Thursday, Brother Adams officiating. _____ STATELINE News Mrs. J.L. Hunter has been seriously ill but is slightly improving. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Golden of Denver, spent Sunday with the latter's parents, Otis O'Neal and family. Paul McClain is leaving the 21st for the armed forces. ______ EPHESUS News Mrs. Elliott Kent speng the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Yates, her father being ill. Mrs. Kent works in LaGrange while her husband is in the service of his country, somewhere in England. Cpl. Troy M. Daniel who has been on maneuvers in the desert of California for quite a while is now stationed at Camp Cooke, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. I.B. Daniel of this community. The Daniels also have another son in the service, Pvt. Roy S. Daniel, who has been in the South Pacific for twenty- two months. Mrs. Lon Dukes of Roanoke, Ala., spent the past month with her daughter here. Mrs. Gena Dukes and daughter Arrie of Anniston, Ala., spent a few days here last week with her sick brother, L.M. Yates and family. ______ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. H.G. Robinson spent last week in Resaca, GA with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Mashburn. __ Mrs. J.H. Daniel of Cedartown is spending a while with her sister, Mrs. G.A. Adams. They will leave in a few days to visit Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Daniel at Stuart, Fla. Mrs. Ralph Daniel was Mrs. Audrey Davis, and the couple were married on February 11th. __ Capt. L.E. and Mrs. Long announce the birth of a son. Mrs. Long is the former Miss Joyce Mickle. They are stationed in Kentucky. ___ Mrs. Jim T. Mickle and Mrs. Carl Simonton went to Atlanta shopping on Wednesday. __ Mrs. G.J. Whitaker, Mrs. M.T. Awbrey, Mrs. Wilson Awbrey and little Susan Kelley spent Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Awbrey in Roanoke, Ala. __ Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Shackleford of Carrollton were among Franklin friends last week.
