HEARN PASSES AFTER A LONG, TRYING ILLNESS Mr. E. Watt Hearn, native of Heard county and popular citizen for many years until a few years ago, when the family moved to Jackson, GA, died at his home there Sunday last. He had a stroke before removing from Franklin from which he never fully recovered. He was 69 years of age and a member of the Baptist church. The funeral was held Monday at the Franklin church where he was a former member, conducted by Rev. J.C. Adams, Methodist pastor, with interment at the family cemetery near Flat Rock. The church was crowded with relatives and friends, with a gorgeous array of delicate flowers. Survivors are one daughter and two sons, Miss Chloe Hearn, Carter Hearn and Judson Hearn, all of Jackson. _______ CARD OF THANKS We wish to take this method to express our heartfelt thanks to our many friends and neighbors for their service rendered during the sickness and passing our our wife and mother. Your many thoughtful deeds and words of kind sympathy helped to make our sorrow lighter. When sorrow comes into your homes may you have just such friends as we have had is our prayer. I.B. Daniel and family ______ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Seaman First Class Jack May has been at home on delay in route. Seaman May has been stationed at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He will not report to his next station and carry out his work as radio man. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Winston Burdett, after a visit of some time with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton, left Sunday for a visit with relatives in Wadley, Ala. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney of Alma, are spending a while in the old home county among relatives and friends, all of whom are delighted when they can meet them. Mr. Denney was a former Heard county teacher and was county superindentant of schools for a number of years. ___ Mrs. Gay Awbrey of LaGrange spent Sunday with Mrs. Minor Stephens. __ Mrs. Pearl Hopkins of Miami, Fla., is spending a while with Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Jones. __ Yeoman Lonza Adams is home on furlough. __ Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Camp of LaGrange visited John Camp and family and all attended home coming at Big Springs, Ala. on Sunday. __ Mrs. Clyde Robinson has been real sick at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Burson. __ The Daniel home was a place of sorrow the past week because of the passing of our dear mother, Mrs. I.B. Daniel, on May 21st. She was laid to rest in Ephesus cemetery on May 26th. The flowers and friends were many. __ RIDGEWAY News Mr. and Mrs. John Harvell visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Wilson of Gray Hill, Sunday last. __ Mrs. James Sheets is on the sick list. __ Mrs. Minnie Arrington and Minnie Jane visited relatives in the valley last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Arrington visited Mr. and Mrs. W.Z. Noles, Sunday last. ________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, June 9, 1944 MRS. M.E. SPRADLIN, 79, PASSES TO HER REWARD After a long period of infirmity, Mrs. M.E. Spradlin, lovingly known as "Aunt" Mat, died Saturday last, passing sweetly and suddenly just after eating her breakfast. The funeral was conducted Monday at Salem by Rev. J.C. Adams, with interment in the churchyard. She was always active in church work. Surviving are her children, O.S. Spradlin, Cullman, Ala; J.F. and W.W. Spradlin, Heard county; A.L. Spradlin, Brunswick, GA; Mrs. Clark Montgomery, Panama, Fla; Mrs. J.C. Brazeal and Miss Henrietta Spradlin, Heard County. ________ Clarence Wood, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Polk Wood of near LaGrange, drowned Sunday while swimming in Smotherman's lake. Other youths swimming with Wood reached shore safely. ____ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. B.T. Adams and Joann of Rome, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Miller. __ Mr. Henry Bowen is out again after being laid up with a stubborn carbuncle. __ Bruce Cumbie, chairman, announces an all day singing at Tyus Baptist church on Sunday June 11th. All singers are invited to this fine event. ___ Pvt. Hilt M. Walker, son of Mrs. J.O. Walls, who was injured in the South Pacific, is back at base in California. ____ Seaman Second Class J.L. Bledsoe has been at home on furlough from Camp Peary, VA. __ It was a pleasant day Sunday last for Editor P.T. McCutchen. Enjoying a seat with Mr. and Mrs. Guy Atkinson, we went to the old home church of all of us at Caney Head. We had the pleasure to see Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Atkinson, lifelong friends, and many others, but all of the aged friends we loved as a child had long since passed away. The decoration program presided over by Miss Beckie Barker was a most delightful one and all kinds of praise were given the splendid addresses of Messrs. W.E. Denney and Albert Walls. We had the pleasure to dine with Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Barker who served a sure enough raised on the farm dinner, entertaining a number of the family and friends. It was our first visit to the dear old church of our childhood in many years. _______ Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Lane were visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Pat Winn in Austell on Thursday. __ Mrs. John Segars of Newnan and Mrs. Richard O'Mar of Chicago were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lane last week. __ Pft. Bruce Eller is spending a furlough with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Bird. He is transferring from Miami, Fla., to San Diego, Calif. __ WARESVILLE News Charlie Hugh Middlebrooks, who is now at Fort McPherson, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Middlebrooks, Sunday. __ Mrs. Mary Moore is sick. __ Mrs. Carrie Evans, who was in a wreck a few weeks ago, is improving at the home of her mother, Mrs. Anna Almon. __ Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Piper from Savannah and Mrs. John Mulkey spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Mulkey. Charlie has been called to the Navy. __ Mr. and Mrs. Perry Kitchens and Barbara and Mattie Perkerson spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Kitchens. Sara and Mr. and Mrs. Kester Kitchens and others visited them Sunday. __ Mrs. E.S. Dennis' children were all home Sunday to celebrate her birthday. __ Henry Wingo is improving in Texas. Parham. __ ROCKALO News Mrs. Noah Shelnutt has been on the sick list. __ Mrs. Willie Bledsoe had the misfortune to get a snake bite while in the crib shucking corn and was rushed to the city-county hospital at LaGrange. She has not returned home much improved. __ Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Thaxton and Betty of Carrollton, visited his parents one day recently. __ Pvt. Winford Yates and wife are visiting Mr. and Mrs. T.O. Yates. __ John Lancaster had a mule to fall dead while plowing. __ Mrs. Dock Cavender continues ill. __ EPHESUS News Miss Margaret Brand of LaGrange, spent the weekend with the Daniel family. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Jeter and family Sunday afternoon. __ Uncle Bill Brazil continues very ill at present. __ ELERY News We are sorry to learn that Blenton Tuggle, U.S.N., is ill in a Galveston, Texas hospital. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney of Alma, Georgia are visiting relatives in Heard and Carroll counties this week. __ Miss Effie Bee Folds of LaGrange, spent the weekend with home folks. __ Charles Gore had the misfortune of cutting one of his fingers off with the mower. __ ROOSTERVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Denney received news that their son, Cpl. Newman Dorsey Denney landed in Italy. __ Mr. B.L. Roberts was called to the bedside of his father at Heflin, Ala., last week but reported he was much improved. __ Mrs. W.W. Stephens is sick at the home of her son, Lee Stephens, in Carrollton. __ Mr. Weems McIntosh of the Navy is at home on a furlough for a few days. __ Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Stephens of Richland, visited his sister, Mrs. L.W. Denney last week. __ Mr. Junior Caswell is at home waiting for his call to the Navy. __ Mrs. Bernie Cumbie of Tyus, visited Mr. and Mrs. J.B. PLEASANT News Mrs. Anna Tollison has been suffering very much by having her knee cap knocked out of place. __ Idus Middlebrooks who is under treatment in LaGrange, is no better. __ ROCKALO News Mr. and Mrs. Will Thaxton visited the latter's father who was seriously injured when thrown from a wagon near Bowdon. __ J.T. Thompson of Hogansville spent the weekend among Heard county relatives and friends, stopping by to have the old home county paper to visit them regularly. __ Mrs. J.T. Wingo, 72, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pierce Smith, of Hogansville, where the funeral was held Wednesday, with interment in LaGrange. Wright and family of Hogansville. ____ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. Taylor Green and children left yesterday for Roanoke, Ala., for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. J.U. Gilliland enroute to their home in Sarasota, Florida. __ Tech. Sgt. Lewis Tompkins of Florence, S.C. was here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Tompkins, a few days last week. __ Cpl. J.W. Ridley of Lincoln, Neb., was among his many Franklin friends on furlough the past week. __ Rev. W.L. Jolly, prominent Methodist minister, died at the home of a daughter at Pelham last week. He was the father of Mrs. Brown Lancaster and a frequent visitor to Franklin. ___ Mr. Frank Lumpkin of Tyler Texas, spent a few days this week with his sister, Mrs. V.O. Smith. Hosts of friends welcomed him. _______ ROOSTERVILLE News Mrs. Floyd Minnie and baby are making their home with Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Noles and Lucrete visited Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Hard of Omaha, Ala., last weekend. ___ Mrs. Leon Arrington of Florida and Mrs. Howell Arrington of Oregon have returned home. Their husbands have been sent overseas. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Harold Phillips announce the birth of a son, on June 22nd. Mrs. Phillips is the former Miss Janet Noles. ___ Rebecca Jane Davis of Simpson is visiting Minnie Jane Arrington. __ Minnie Jane Arrington is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heard of Simpson. __ Mrs. James Sheets has returned home from the hospital in Roanoke, Ala., but continues ill at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Brown announce the birth of a son at Bonner hospital in Roanoke, Ala., June 15th. Mrs. Brown is the former Miss Jo Todd of Roanoke, Ala. ___ ROCKALO News Willie Cavender was carried to an Atlanta hospital one day recently. __ A nice dinner was served at the home of Mrs. C.E. Bryan in honor of Herschel who is leaving for Uncle Sam's service. ___ Mrs. Doc Cavender continues seriously ill. __ Mr. and Mrs. Levi Noles visited their daughter Mrs. Cecil Parker at LaGrange Saturday last. __ EPHESUS News Mr. and Mrs. Earl Burson and Ernestine of Atlanta are visiting Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Burson a few days before Earl leaves to enter Uncle Sam's service. __ Mrs. B.R. Wood continues in feeble health. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Prince, Wayne and J.B. Jr., visited her mother, Mrs. Ollie Eley in Hogansville on Sunday. ______ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Pvt. William E. (Billy) Herndon of Carrollton and LaGrange, was seriously wounded in Italy on June 1st. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Herndon of Carrollton, formerly of Heard county. __ Mr. and Mrs. John Miller are spending the week at Daytona Beach, Fla. __ Mrs. V.O. Smith left Tuesday for New Smyrna, Fla., to spend a couple of weeks with her sister, Mrs. D.A. Few. __ Mr. P.N. McWaters is quite ill and friends have raised a neat sum to assist him in hospitalization in Atlanta. __ S/Sft. Wm. B. Davis Jr. and wife from Kelly Field, Texas, arrived Friday to spend a 14 day furlough with his father, Mr. W.B.
