Jeff Whitley of Anniston, Ala., spent Sunday with his family and parents, Mrs. Whitley and T.J. Whitley and family. ___ Mrs. Henry Hunter is real sick at this writing. __ C.B. and Mrs. Birchfield and daughter Jean from LaGrange, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. I.G. Golden and family. __ Buck Golden left Wednesday the 28th for the Navy. He is stationed at Camp Peary, Virginia. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Ida Ella Nutt died June 20th at the home of her son, John Nutt and was laid to rest here July 2nd. "Miss Ida", as she was lovingly known, leaves many friends here, as well as at other places. ___ Mr. and Mrs. John Shelnutt and children of Hogansville, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Eley Sr. __ Mrs. J.H. Cammon and Janice spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rogers, while Mr. Cammon was attending conferences at Athens. __ ELERY News Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Barker visited Mr. and Mrs. Grover Barker at Oxford, Ala., last Sunday. Mr. Hoke Barker and family of Bowdon joined them on the trip. __ The soldier boys from this community that have gone across are: James E. Hugh Walls has his false teeth. __ RIDGEWAY News Mrs. Lou Brown visited her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clarance Brown and children of Highway, Ala., last weekend. __ Minnie Jane Arrington is visiting her Aunt, Mrs. Earl Moses of Omaha, Ala. __ Mrs. John Harwell has received news that her son Manley, of the U.S. Navy, who has been overseas for eighteen months, is coming home on furlough. __ Mrs. Minnie Arrington was happily surprized Sunday when all of her children gathered in and brought lunch boxes filled. Lunch was spread under the big shade trees at noon. Those attending were: Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Arrington and E.T. Jr., of Langdale, Ala ______ EPHESUS News Pvt. Roy S. Daniel returned home July 1st after twenty-six months in service in the southwest pacific. It is quite interesting to hear him talk of the way of life in the tropical zone. He is the son of Mr. I.B. Daniel. The home has had many visitors since his return. __ Audrey Yates from the Marines at Parris Island, S.C. is visiting his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Yates. __ Mr. F.H. Pope is in the Atlanta hospital with asthma. __ Mr. and Mrs. Carl Arrington of Douglasville spent the fourth with Mrs. W.M. Culpepper and Mrs. Tonnie Culpepper. ___ Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Hill and Maria of Atlanta visited Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Cater on Monday. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Pfc. and Mrs. N.C. Jackson of Philadelphia, PA are spending a furlough with Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Davis and other relatives. __ Mrs. Jack Bledsoe, 60, formerly of Heard County and sister-in-law of Mr. C.W. Bledsoe, died at her home in Haleyville, Alabama last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Pike of Hogansville have received news that their son Pfc. Henry H. Pike, has arrived safely somewhere in India. __ Mr. Paul Faver, prominent farmer of near Centralhatchee, was drowned in the Chattahoochee river near his home Monday afternoon, while he was swimming in the river. The body was recovered early Tuesday. We have not been able to get full particulars as we go to press. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, July 14, 1944 ROCKALO News Mrs. Sallie Thaxton of Newnan is spending several days with Mrs. Mollie Hull. __ Mrs. Lela Witcher of Carrollton has been visiting "Uncle" Rufus Buchanan and family. __ Willie Cavender is improving after a long illness but her mother continues ill. __ MT. PLEASANT News Mr. and Mrs. Larry Green and daughter, Mrs. Marye Will Harris all of Roanoke, spent Sunday afternoon and night with Mr. and Mrs. I.E. Middlebrooks. __ We are sorry to say that Curtis Harris had a bad fall Sunday afternoon as he was stepping across a ditch and his foot slipped and he fell, striking his side on a rock. The rushed him to the doctor. __ Isham Nelms has been laid up for ten days with a badly bruised leg caused by two saw mill strucks running together. __ Mrs. Cliff Turner and Mrs. Austin Davis and children spent Sunday in Hogansville with Jamie Forbes and family. __ Mrs. Dollie Turner is staying a month in Hogansville with a cousin who is blind. __ ELERY News Uncle John Stroud, we are happy to report, is doing much better. __ We are glad to welcome Gittis Gosdin back home for a few days from over seas combat duty. __ Mrs. Ben Mosely visited her sister Mrs. Andrews at LaGrange, who has been very sick. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ted Barker and Nancy and Mrs. Glen Noles left Sunday afternoon for their home in Tampa, Fla. __ We are sorry to hear of the sudden death of Mr. Jim Merrell of Roopville. He was our mail carrier for several years. The family have our sympathy. __ SIMPSON News Sunday, July 9th, the Spradlin reunion was held at Simpson church, taking part in Sunday school and then a good dinner was spread in the church yard which all enjoyed. We enjoyed the quartet by Bura Spradlin's family and a special song in memory of Mrs. M.E. Spradlin. The song was entitled " Where We Never Grow Old". Aunt Mat departed this life June 2nd and we miss her so much. Rev. Arch Neitt made a talk and dismissed the crowd after singing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." ______ CORINTH News Mrs. P.H. Randall of Atlanta is spending a few days with her mother, Mrs. J.S. Jackson. __ Mr. and Mrs. James Webb, who now reside in Atlanta, were at their old home here last week. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. Earl Asborne and children, Wanda and Jane, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Mr. Eddie Pope of Washington, D.C. were the recent visitors of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Pope. __ Pvt. Hollis Taylor of Camp Hulen, Tex., is spending a furlough with his parents. __ Mrs. Edwin Sledge, Dorthy and Bobby or Roopville spent Sunday with Mrs. Angie Crockett. __ Mr. and Mrs. Leon Tarpley of Villa Rica, were called here Sunday on account of illness of Mrs. W.H. Lancaster. Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster returned home with the Tarpleys on Monday. __ Two soldiers, former Heard countians, were recent casualties in the far battle fronts. Harvey Parham was wounded in France on June 7th and James Parham was reported missing over Germany on July 21st. They are sons of Mr. Cliff Parham of Tampa, Fla. and nephews of Hon. Jep H. Parham, recently nominated for representative of Heard County. ____ On Saturday, July 29th, there will be a grave yard cleaning at New Hope. Everybody urged to attend. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, July 21, 1944 J.A. PENDERGRAST DIED IN COLUMBUS J. Albert Pendergrast of Reynolds, former professor in the public schools in Newnan, died early Wednesday at the City Hospital in Columbus, following a brief illness. He was seventy years of age. A resident of Newnan for many years, he was at one time the principal of Atkinson Grammer school and for a number of years taught in the schools of Luthersville and Franklin. At the time of his death he was the head of the Science Dept. in the High School at Reynolds. ___ POPULAR CITIZEN REACHES 81 YEARS Mr. J.J. Harry celebrated his 81st birthday July 9th at his home near Glenn. All seven of his children were present. The grandsons in service for their country were missed by all; they include Ambrose Harry, Earl Wilkerson and John Tom Russell who are overseas; Andrew Harry Jr., Stanley Nierodzik and Herman Harry. There were nine great grandchildren present. At noon the table was spread under the trees in the yard. Rev. Olin Sheppard gave thanks for what his grandfather's life had meant to the family. During the afternoon friendly conversation was enjoyed by relatives and friends. ___ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Earl Sisson and son of Ringgold are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Cooley. __ EPHESUS News Pvt. Earl Rogers of Ft. Bragg, N.C. is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Rogers with his wife and daughter of LaGrange and Auburn. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Chester Mashburn of LaGrange spent the weekend with relatives and attended church. __ Those visiting I.B. Daniel's family on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Dennis, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Laster of LaGrange, and Enoch Carter of Mountain Run, Kentucky. ___ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. V.O. Smith has returned from a visit to her sister, Mrs. D.A. Few at New Smyrna, Fla. and Crosby Few came with her for a visit here. __ Seaman 2 c., Forrest Lee is at home for a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elford Lee. __ Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Settles of Winder, came Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Paschal. Mrs. Settles stayed over for a visit. __ Mr. Cliff Lee from the Bell Bomber Plant spent the weekend with his family. __ Mr. Jim Echols of Everglades, Fla., is spending a while with his brother, Mr. W.C. Echols. __ The annual reunion of the Walls family will be held at Caneyhead Church in Heard county on Sunday July 23rd. Members of the family of the late C.B. PLEASANT News Mrs. Willie Lee Nelms spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Will Lipham and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kirk of LaGrange, spent Sunday night and Monday at his father's home place. __ Mrs. J.O. Boggus is kept right busy these days attending to her two little grandchildren, while their mother Edith is in the hospital and their father is in the service overseas. __ Mrs. Alice (Lester) Meacham of Atlanta with her fathe and her mother-in-law of LaGrange spent Sunday with Whitley Lester and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper of Roanoke, Ala., spent Wednesday last with the latter's sister, Mrs. I.E. Middlebrooks who is still suffering from that awful arthritis. __ A very sad incident happened Wednesday last at Mr. Luke Golden's sawmill. A dead tree fell on Render Combs, hit him on the back of the head and knocked him unconscious. They rushed him to the LaGrange hospital where he remained unconscious about 48 hours but glad to say he is able to be out again. ____ FORMER HEARD COUNTIAN DIES IN THOMASTON Quanan Davis, former resident of Heard County, died in his home in Thomaston early Friday morning last following an illness of two months. Funeral and interment took place in Thomaston Saturday. Survivors include his widow, two stepsons, Gene and Elmo Harrell, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Davis of Yatesville, a sister, Mrs. Claudia Beatty of Camilla and a brother, Sheland of Little Rock, Ark. ____ ROCKALO News Mrs. Bernice Bledsoe and children are visiting J.L.
