Despite the gas rationing all of the immediate family were present. Quite a few of the boys are in the service. We did not forget them and hope that they will be with us next year. Burgess and family of Rockalo. __ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arrington and Minnie Jane visited Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heard last week at Simpson, Artis Heard being home on furlough from Alaska. __ Mrs. W.E. Arrington is ill at Knight Sanatorium in Roanoke, Ala. __ Mrs. Arthur Smith is on the sick list. __ Mrs. Elgin Nation and daughter Delores of Double Springs, Ala., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. B.O. Noles and Mr. and Mrs. V.M. Nation. __ Mrs. Lillie Smith and daughter Janet are visiting the former's sister, Mrs. Floyd Rosser and family in South Carolina. __ Mrs. Lon Brown visited her daughter, Mrs. Charlie Alsabrook and family of LaGrange Saturday last. __ ELERY News We are sorry to say Mrs. Folds is sick. Her daughter Effie Bee, from LaGrange is staying this week at home with her. __ Several attended the funeral of Mrs. Dock Cavender Saturday afternoon. We were sorry to learn of her death. __ Little Eddie Miller, small son of Mrs. Clara Miller has whooping cough. They are living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Bledsoe for the duration. Her husband is somewhere in the South Pacific. __ Mr. Linard Marshall had a narrow escape from lightning Monday afternoon. He had just left the phone when the lightning came in on the phone and hit some gun shells. __ HEARD COUNTY BOY KILLED IN ITALY Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Moore of Route 1, Roopville, Georgia have been notified that their son, Sgt. Garvin (Dick) Moore was killed in action in Italy on July 8th. Sgt. Moore was 19 years old at the time of his death and was born and lived for a number of years with his family in the Bethel community in Randolph County, Ala. He attended school at Bethel and in Heard County. He had served with the Army for fifteen months and had been oveseas about eight months. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Major and Winford and four sisters, Lola Mae, Essie Lee, Louise and Christine, all of Route 1, Roopville. He was inducted in Heard County. ______ WARESVILLE News Sunday, August 6th, the Kitchens will have their reunion at Paran and on the 2nd Sunday the Middlebrooks reunion will be held at Bethel. __ Sorry to hear of the death of Mr. and Mrs. Ira O'Neal's son who was killed in service a few months ago. He was a cousin of Jesse and Luther O'Neal. ___ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP The people of Franklin sympathize with Lou Johnson, colored, in the death of her son Harvey, who was killed in combat in the invasion of France on June 30th. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, August 11, 1944 71 YEAR OLD CITIZEN PASSES SUNDAY LAST Mr. Glenn Harris, 71, after along period of ill health, died at his home near Wesley Chapel Sunday last, where the funeral and interment occurred Monday, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. Claude Grimes, assisted by Rev. J.C. Adams. Lewis and Lipford were directors in charge. Surviving are his widow and one son, Raymond Harris. ___ 2 CARROLL COUNTY MEN SLAIN IN A MELEE AT HOLLINGSWORTH FERRY Raymond Smith, a farmer of Hollingsworth Ferry, is under arrest here on a charge of shooting and killing two of his neighbors, W.L. Williamson, 36, and Melvin Cheatwood, 27, both of Lowell, in Carroll County. Sheriff J.E. Gladney has made a charge of murder against Smith. The affair took place at noon Monday on the banks of the Chattahoochee river, near Smith's farm, according to Gladney. Smith told Gladney that he shot the two men in self defense. The Sheriff said that Smith used a single barrel shotgun and shot the men in the right breast. Concerning the causes of the shooting, the Sheriff said " from what I can learn there had been bad blood between Smith on the one side and Williamson and Cheatwood on the other. Smith is said to have accused both Williamson and Cheatwood of complaining that he was making liquor. "At the time of the incident there were four men on the scene, Williamson and Cheatwood, Cheatwood's brother and Smith himself. I have been unable to learn why they went down to the river bank." Williamson and Cheatwood, the two dead men, were prominent farmers in Carroll County, according to Sheriff Gladney. He said that Smith was a farmer in Heard County. Smith will be held in jail here without bond pending the inquiry by the grand jury. ______ RIDGEWAY News Mr. Wayne Janney of Greenville, S.C. and MIss Virginia Janney of LaGrange, visited their father, Mr. J.C. Janney and family last weekend. __ Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Arrington and children of Simpson, visited Mr. and Mrs. William Arrington last weekend. __ This community was made sad to hear of the death of Mrs. Nancy Arrington Davis, of Hogansville. She was a good woman and loved by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons and four daughters, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, a host of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held at Ridgeway with Revs. Herman Caldwell, O.S. Sheets and Smith Dansby officiating. The bereaved family have our sympathy. ____ EPHESUS News Mrs. Gena Dukes of Anniston, Ala., is at the bedside of her brother, L.M. Yates who is seriously ill. __ D.H. Daniel and family of LaGrange, spent the weekend with his father, I.B. Daniel. __ Sgt. Paul Rogers of Long Island, N.Y. and Mrs. Rogers of Atlanta are spending a three day pass with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Rogers and family. __ Mr. J.B. Prince and family have moved into their beautiful new home, just across the road from W.L. Rogers. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Troy Chambers is at home from the Carrollton Clinic after an operation there. __ Mrs. Robert Lott of Monroe, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Montgomery. __ BURSON's CROSS ROADS News Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Burson and children of LaGrange and Pvt. and Mrs. James Burson of Orlando, Florida are with their sister, Mrs. Paul Kelly who was struck by lightning three weeks ago and is still not doing so well. __ Mrs. Monroe Powell is on the sick list. __ Mrs. Brooks Burson has moved in with her daughter Mrs. Bill Richards at Woodland, Ala., to make her home. __ "Aunt" Georgia Sears has moved with relatives to Alabama. __ ROCKALO News Mrs. Dock Cavender passed away and was laid to rest at Macedonia Church the past week. __ Mrs. Emma Grizzard is visiting her sister Gena Dukes at Anniston, Ala., under treatment of a doctor, as she continues ill. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mrs. T.W. Goodson spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Farr in Rock Mills, Ala. __ Mrs. Winston Burdett and son of Wadley, Ala., visited Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton a few days past. __ Mr. Coe Jones entered the hospital at LaGrange Monday to have an operation. __ NEWSPAPER ISSUE OF Friday, August 18, 1944 RIDGEWAY News Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Lesley and family visited Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Talley of Rockalo Sunday last. __ Mr. and Mrs. H.I. Martin visited relatives in Talladega, Ala., last weekend. __ Mr. and Mrs. Brince Noles had as guests Sunday last, Mr. and Mrs. V.M. Nation and Pfc. Jasper Nation of Atlanta, and Mrs. and Mrs. John Noles and family of LaGrange. ___ Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Arrington visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Arrington of Simpson, last weekend. __ EPHESUS News The community was made sad August 12th when our "Uncle" W.D. Jordan passed on to his reward at the age of 68 years. He had spent a portion of his life in Heard County where he died. He was a righteous man. He was laid to rest in Sardis Cemetery Sunday afternoon with many relatives and friends to mourn his going. __ Mr. and Mrs. John Cavender and children spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Duffey of Roosterville. __ Kelly Frost, son of Mr. Ance Frost of this community, has been reported missing in action in France. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Wood and son of Bowdon spent the weekend with Cecil Spruell and family. __ Mrs. Charlie Heard is ill at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. A.G. Wortham. __ Sanford Shelnutt visited his daughter, Mrs. Paul Jackson, last weekend. __ BURSON'S CROSS ROADS News Mrs. Charles Watkins and Mrs. Jeffy Veal and little daughter Pearl are visiting their sister, Mrs. Bernice Shirey of Hogansville. __ ROCKALO News M.C. Shelnutt, wife and son Jerry from Mexico, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Noah Shelnutt. __ News came to Mrs. W.T. Thaxton Monday night that her nephew Hoyatt South was killed in action over in New Guinea. The bereaved family, oh, how can they give him up, Hoyatt was a good boy. ___ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. Frank Royston and children of Roanoke, Ala., spent Sunday with Dr. and Mrs. J.L. Taylor. __ Mrs. A.D. Lipham and her charming daughter Dorothy, of Jackson, Miss., are spending a few days among Heard County relatives. __ Sheriff Gladney and Deputies J.J. Arrington and Tom Gladney captured 30 gallons of moonshine in the upper edge of the county on Monday but failed to find any of them men or the still.
