Glen White and Cpl. Carl Prince are visiting their parents. __ Mrs. Minnie Pope of Mableton, spent several days with her sister, Mrs. Doris Eley. __ Mrs. Vivian Bailey is on the sick list. __ Mr. Lewis Webb has been very sick but improving. __ Leon Merrill and family have moved to Atlanta. ______ JOHN W. SORRELL DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Mr. John W. Sorrell, 72, a Spanish-American war veteran and highly esteemed citizen, died Tuesday night at the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta, after an extended illness. We are advised that the funeral and interment will occur today at Salem. Surviving are two sisters and one brother; Mrs. G.E. Daniel of Franklin; Mrs. Sallie Norton of LaGrange; and J.P. Sorrell of Louisville, Alabama. ___ FOLDS REUNION The family reunion at the home of Noah L. Folds on Sunday was attended by a large crowd. About 150 were present. All children were present. A grand barbecue dinner was served. Singing was enjoyed by all. In the afternoon, Sacred Harp singing was led by Frank Rogers and others. Preaching services were conducted by Rev. Lovic Bryan. ____ ROCKALO News Rev. W.H. Caldwell has been seriously ill but shows much improvement at present. __ Mr. Charlie Bryan and little son Hollis, visited his daughter Mrs. A. Vaughn on Sunday last at a Roanoke hospital and reported her improving. __ EPHESUS News Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Cash of Alabama spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. John Cavender. Mrs. Cavender returned with them to be under the care of her physician here for a few days. __ Pfc. Waymer C. Yarbrough of Camp Clayburne, LA., is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Yarbrough. He will return to Camp Cooke, California on Sept. 11th. __ Mrs. L.M. Daniel is on the sick list. __ Mr. Dewey Nixon seems to be the champion shooter around here. He recently killed five hawks and two owls. __ MT. PLEASANT News Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Barber and son Handley, spent Sunday in Atlanta with her brother Ben and family who we are sorry to hear just received the sad news of the death of his only son Ben Jr., in Italy, but have not learned the particulars. __ Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bagswell of Stone Mountain, spent Monday night with her brother, Oscar Barber and family. __ Rev. S.S. Hunter and wife with Jim Boggus, went to LaGrange Saturday afternoon to spend the night with Bee Colley and family and have a prayer meeting at their home. __ Mrs. Lula Daniel and Mrs. Louise Daniel and baby from over the river, spent Saturday night and Sunday with Louise's mother, Mrs. Willie Lee Nelms. __ Mrs. Mary Arrington is spending a few days in Hogansville with Hoyt Arrington and family. Hoyt has been right sick but glad to say is much better. __ Cpl. Johnny Monroe and wife of Atlanta are spending af ew days with the latter's father, Bert Davis, and sister, Mrs. Idus Middlebrooks. ___ STATE LINE News Junior O'Neal has gone to Brunswick, Georgia to spend several days with his aunt, Mrs. Freeman Davis. __ Bill O'Neal has gone to Akron, Ohio to get a job. We regret very much to give him up. __ HOME NEWS Leonard Baxter, U.S.N., Pensacola, Florida, is spending a few days leave with his parents and friends. __ Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Duke and family had as their guests for last Sunday, Alex Thompson and Martha, Mrs. Milton Combs and Ann, Mrs. Mort Craven and Alton, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Byrd, Mr. and Mrs. Heard Thompson, Mrs. A.C. Davis and Mrs. Odis Tillman and children. ___ Mrs. A.C. Davis and Mrs. Clifford Duke spent several days with their sister, Mrs. Jessie B. Cunningham of Newnan. Mrs. Cunningham returned home with them for a short visit. ___ Mrs. A.C. Davis, Mrs. Odis Tillman and children, Mary Alice and Billy, all of Moultrie, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Duke and family for the past two weeks. Mrs. Davis, a sister of Mrs. Duke, is the former Miss Lee Berta Thompson who was reared in Heard County. She moved with her family to south Georgia in 1921 and has not been back here in ten years. ___ Mrs. Mary Wright has returned from a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Koppe in Shrevesport, LA. __ Mrs. and Mrs. W.W. Stallings of LaGrange visited Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Thompkins Sunday. __ DEATH OF MRS. JOHN PRUITT Mrs. John Pruitt, sixty seven, died at her home near Corinth on August 31st, after an illness of ten days. Mrs. Pruitt was a member of the Brown and Johnston families, both prominent pioneer Heard County families. Her husband, the late John Pruitt, was one of Heard County's commissioners of roads and revenue for a number of years. She is survived by one brother, W.W. Johnston of Louisiana and a number of nieces and nephews, including Charlie B. Johnston and John C. Johnston Jr. The late John C. Johnston was her brother. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Baptist church of which she was a loyal member. _______ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 15, 1944 CORINTH News Mrs. P.H. Randall and Mrs. L.J. Berry recently spent several days with their mother, Mrs. J.S. Jackson. __ Mr. and Mrs. Bob Formby are kept informed of the condition of their son Coley, who is in a hospital in England after being wounded in France. Good reports come in and we hope Coley will soon be entirely well. __ Mr. Thomas Miller and Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Annie Jones were down from Atlanta last week to visit their mother, Mrs. Sallie Miller. ___ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Turner of Columbus, spent the weekend with Robert Turner and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jackson spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shelnutt at Lindale, Ala. __ Of interest to their many friends were the marriages of Miss Fannie Mae Jackson and Hoyt Echols and of Miss Noveline Prince and Curtis Norwood of the Navy. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Homer Shirey of Newnan spent the weekend with Dan Bailey and family. __ EPHESUS News Those from this community passed for the Army recently are Chester Mitchell, Doris Williamson, Cecil Brand. __ Mrs. L.A. Duke of Roanoke, Ala., is spending awhile with her daughter, Mrs. L.M. Daniel. __ Sgt. Rathmel Stephems, who has been overseas twenty-one months, arrived at home Sept. 6th. He will remain here twenty-two days and then report for duty at Lincoln, Neb. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Stephens. He has been at Sardinia Island. __ Mr. and Mrs. Carl Arrington and Joe Boy of Douglasville, visited Mrs. W.M. Culpepper and Mrs. Lucy Culpepper on Sunday. __ The party given by Miss Annie Ruth Shirey on Saturday night was well attended. __ Mr. and Mrs. Rufus McWhorter and family and Miss Annie Ruth Bowen of Centralhatchee spent Sunday with J.B. Prince and family. __ L.M. Yates continues ill at his home. __ LOCAL News Our good friend L.A. Bevis of Roanoke, Ala., was here early in the week to visit and look after the family burial grounds west of town. He is one of the few boyhood friends and school mates we have left and of course it is ever a delight to get to see him and shake his honest hand. __ Mr. A.A. Burdett died at his home in Moultrie on Tuesday last. He was a brother of the late H.E. Burdett of Franklin, and Mrs. Burdett attended the funeral on Wednesday. __ Mrs. Will Williamson is quite ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.W. Bledsoe. __ Mrs. W.T. Eley of Hogansville and Mrs. Minnie Pope of Atlanta were recent guests of the family of their brother, Mr. C.W. Bledsoe. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 22, 1944 CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Bledsoe and children of Arnco, visited Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Webb recently. Mr. Webb continues ill. __ Mrs, Kathryn Kee of Moreland spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Young Merrell. __ LOCAL News Mr. I.Q. Adams has been ill for some time with rheumatism. __ Mr. W.F. Davidson has received information that his brother Joe is missing in the wreck of the destroyer Warrenton which went down in the recent hurricane. __ Mrs. B.F. McWhorter of Centralhatchee will celebrate her 78th birthday next Sunday, September 24th. All relaives and friends are invited. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 29, 1944 J.H. CHAPMAN DIED AT AGE 64 Mr. J.H. Chapman died at his home near Simpson on Sunday last, and was buried Wednesday morning with Masonic honors at New Springs, at services conducted by Rev. Oscar Sheets, with Lewis & Lipford directors. Worshipful A.J. Huckeba conducted the Masonic service. Surviving are his widow, two sons, Edgar Chapman of Carrollton, and Coy Chapman, in a hospital in England; two daughters, Mrs. Emory Powers of Austell; and Mrs. Dolphus Craven of Franklin. ___ S/SGT JAMES E. BARKER MISSING IN ACTION IN OVERSEA BATTLE FRONT Staff Sergeant James E. Barker, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Barker, Roopville, Georgia, has been awarded the Air medal, it was announced by the 15th Army Air Force Headquarters. In the words of teh citation, S/Sgt. Barker was awarded the medal for meritorious achievement in aerial flight while participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy. First Radioman and Aerial Gunner Barker is stationed in Italy with the 15th A.A.F. Liberator which has bombed Vienna, Steyr, Munich, Lyons, Pleeste and other vital targets in the network of German industrial centers throughout southern Europe. A graduate of Centralhatchee High School in the class of 1940, S/Sgt. Barker was employed as a radio technician by the Zenith Radio Corporation before he entered the service on December 23, 1942. He attended aerial gunnery school at Harlengen, Texas prior to his assignment to the 15th Air Force overseas. Shortly after receipt of this notice of citation, his shocked parents last Thursday received notice from the government that Sgt. Barker was missing in action since Sept. 8th over enemy territory. Hosts of friends trust that he parachuted to safety and that he may yet show up alive and safe. Sgt. Barker is a cousin of Mrs. Joe Hopson of Franklin and a third cousin of the Editor of the News and Banner. ______ HUGE STILL SEIZED BY REVENUE AGENTS The moonshine stills come big in Georgia these days! Agents of the State Revenue Department seized one the other day near the old White Sulphur Springs Hotel of the Columbus-Atlanta highway which has turned out about one thousand gallons of "white lightning" each twenty four hours. The elaborate equipment included a 15 horsepower upright boiler, 27 vats containing ten thousand gallons of mash, 56 sixty gallon barrels of molasses, five thousand pounds of sugar, three thousand pounds of shorts, rye malt and bran, and 177 dozen one half gallon fruit jars. Six enforcement officers stationed themselves in the woods near the still at midnight for a seven hour wait and closed in when the still was fired up in the morning, according to C.A. Gillespie, director of the department's alcohol tax and control unit. Arrested were to white men and two negroes. A third white man escaped. Director Gillespie is a former Heard Countian. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Cecil Spruell and family visited J.W. Spruell and family at Graham, Alabama the weekend. __ Mrs. J.A. Kent attended the funeral of Mrs. Ella Maxwell at Ephesus on Monday. __ Uncle Charlie Parham has been ill recently. __ Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bussey were notified one day last week that their son Jep, is missing in action in France. They have the sympathy of the community. __ EPHESUS News Of interest to their many friends is the marriage of Pfc. Glenn Brand of Camp Swift, Texas and Miss Issie Moore of this place on Sept. 19th. Glenn returned to camp on Sept 26th. __ Mrs. Ella Maxwell of the Veal community was buried here Monday a.m. Sept. 25th. A good woman has gone to reap her reward. __ Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cash of Shawnutt, Ala., visited Mr. and Mrs. John Cavender and family over the weekend. Mrs. Cavender remains on the sick list. __ L.M. Yates continues very low. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Rogers attended the funeral of their niece, Mrs. Claudia Ward of Bremen, on Monday. __ ROCKALO News Uncle Hilliard Smith, a good citizen of Heard County, passed away Thursday last and was laid to rest at the Macedonia churchyard, Rev. Caldwell officiating. __ Little Minnie Jane Arrington of Ridgeway, has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. T.O. Yates the past week. __ Richard Lancaster of Cullman, Ala., visited Mrs. Sallie and Miss Mayhayly Lancaster one day recently. __ LOCAL News Mrs. A.J. Lane is the guest of relatives in Cullman, Ala. __ Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Lane have returned from a visit to relatives in Birmingham, Ala. __ MT. PLEASANT News Elmer Kirk, who is one of the guards at Callaway's Mills, with is wife, spent Saturday and Sunday night at his father's old home here. __ Miss Zelma Nelms and Tommy Daniel from over the river were happily married a few days ago. Zelma is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Nelms. __ ROCKALO News Sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Jim Bailey. __ Mrs.Noah Shelnut has returned home after a delightful visit with her son and wife in New Mexico. __ Junior Brandenburgh will soon leave for Uncle Sam's service. __ RIDGEWAY News Mrs. Minnie Arrington is visiting Mrs. Earl Moses of Omaha, Ala. __ Minnie Jane Arrington is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Olen Yates of Rockalo. __ Glad to have Mr. and Mrs. Carvie Sheets and family move back to our community from LaGrange.
