Otis L. White of Franklin, Georgia who was a farmer before entering the Army Air Forces on January 23, 1943 at Ft. McPherson, GA. The schedule at Pvt. White's kitchen is that of a typical Air Forces mess hall. When the combat men are awakened in the wee hours before dawn for briefing, it's an accepted thing that the books have been up several hours preparing that hot breakfast that will send the fliers off on their missions with contented stomachs. When they return from the grueling flight, they find hot coffee and doughnuts from the mess hall waiting for them. And in between of course, come the regular meals that they have to prepare for for the ground crew. When Pvt. White's LIberator squadron arrived at its present base, there was only a make shift stone building with no windows to be used as a kitchen. The floor was dirt and some became ankle deep in mud from the constantly leaking roof. There was no mess hall, the men ate outside in the bitter cold and usually in a pouring rain. But today it is an entirely different story, the kitchen is now a light, water-tight cement floored building that compares favorably with any army kitchen in the states. Adjoining it is a mess hall and jsut outside is a bakery which turns out real pies and cakes. Pvt.
