Burgess Sunday last. __ Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Arrington and children of Springfield, Ala., visited Mrs. S.I. Arrington Sunday last. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Noles entertained Sunday last in honor of their son, Pfc. Fred Noles of Fort Lewis, Washington. A bountiful dinner was spread at noon. __ Gilbert Arrington of the U.S.N. visited Mrs. S.I. Arrington, Misses Rossie Mae Cash and Ona Prestridge, Sunday last. ___ CORINTH News Lieut. George R. Berry recently sent home to his mother, Mrs. Lillian J. Berry, a medal he had received, the citation accompaning the medal saying it was given for his skill and meritorious service in repeated missions over enemy territory. George completed his training at Monroe, LA in May and since going overseas is assigned as navigator to this Flight Commander's plane. In all he has made eighteen missions over Germany. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Walter Arnold returned to their home in Philadelphia after a ten day visit with their mother, Mrs. Lucious Arnold. Walter is in service with the Coast Guard. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Harold Jackson, Hollis Walls and Andrew Buchannon are among the boys leaving for U.S. service this week. __ Rev. and Mrs. J.A. Nutt received a message Sunday that their son Dillard Nutt, serving in the Army overseas, has been killed. The family has the sympathy of their many friends. ___ WARESVILLE News Mr. and Mrs. Amos Barnes had all their children with them Sunday for the first time in several years. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Arnett have moved in the house with his mother and father. __ Mr. and Mrs. Walt McDowell will move back to LaGrange on Monday. __ EPHESUS News Mr. R.A. Cater is in very poor health at present. __ Sgt. James H. Prince of Siapan writes his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Prince often. __ LOCAL News Mr. J.W. Spradlin of Carrollton was a visitor Sunday at the Methodist church where he was a former member. __ Many friends of the family learn with regret and sympathy of the message that Sgt. J. Dillard Nutt was killed in action in France in the latter part of November. __ Mr. S.W. Hubbard, formerly of this county, and brother-in-law of Mrs. H.S. Bird and Mr. T.B. Lane, died at the State Sanitorium on Sunday. Funeral and interment were held in Atlanta. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 22, 1944 J. WALTER ALLEN, FORMER HEARD COUNTIAN, DIES SUDDENLY IN MISSISSIPPI News was received the past week of the sudden death from a heart attack of Mr. J.W. Allen, formerly of this county, but fo rthe past several years a prominent and successful businessman of Mississippi. He died while at Columbus, Mississippi on business and was buried there. He was well known in Heard County where he was reared, and was 64 years of age. Survivors are his widow, one adopted son, J.W. Allen, in the Navy; one brother, Gordon Allen of this county; three sisters, Mrs. Martin Talley of Roanoke, Ala.; Mrs. Blanche Wood of Atlanta; Mrs. B.A. Tipper of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. J.T. Moore is his nephew. ____ CENTRALHATCHEE News Relatives and friends of Mrs. Jewel Gladney of LaGrange will regret to hear that she is ill. __ We are sorry to hear that Mrs. Jim Foster of Glenloch is in a hospital in Augusta. __ Mack Street continues to be ill. __ Bryant McWhorter who is in camp in Florida, is expected to spend next week at home. __ POPULAR COUPLE ENJOY 50 YEARS WEDDED BLISS A huge surprize came to Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Lancaster on Sunday last. It was the 50th anniversary of their marriage. They had promised to spend the day with their daughter, Mrs. Leon Tarpley in Villa Rica. Saturday night Brown Lancaster came down from Atlanta to see that they did. Imagine the couple's surprize when they arrived to find the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tarpley decorated for a great affair, and a huge pile of presents of every description finished in gold or wrapped in gold, all the family present and numbers of local people also, Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster having lived for a time in Villa Rica. Monday found the couple at their Franklin store in which they also reside, busy as bees waiting on their christmas trade. Naturally hosts of Franklin friends called to see the lovely anniversary cake pendant from which were 50 golden bells. ___ EPHESUS News Aunt Lou Daniel, age 89, wife of the late Rev. I.H. Daniel, was laid to rest at Ephesus Wednesday of last week. Another good woman has gone to reap her reward, leaving behind a well spent life. ___ Mrs. Jolly Terrell has gone to Fort Meade, MD to spend the Christmas holidays with her husband, Cpl. J.F. Terrell. __ Gilbert Arrington of the U.S. Navy has been visiting his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Brewer Lee Paschal. __ WAYSIDE News Mrs. Mozelle Gosdin is spending a few days with relatives at Unity. __ Deltha Irrick has returned home to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shirey, for awhile. __ Mr. Jeff Shirey of Texas is spending a few days with his sister, Mrs. Effie Thompson. __ Pvt. Dewey Joe Shirey is ill and in a hospital at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Ark., although his parents have been informed that he is some better. __ Mr. and Mrs. Troy Powers and baby of LaGrange were Sunday guests of their mother, Mrs. Effie Thompson. __ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baugh were called to Mr. Frank Jackson's at Simpson Saturday night. He is ill with cancer. ___ Mr. Mack Street seems to be improving some for the last few weeks. __ Mr. Hope Lane spent Monday with his father, Mr. L.T. Lane, to help kill hogs. __ Fred Shirey of the Navy is taking his training at Camp Peary, Virginia. ________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, December 29, 1944 BONNIE JOHNSON REPORTED DEAD IN SOUTHWEST PACIFIC Bonnie Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cummings Johnson, was recently reported missing and now comes a letter to his parents announcing their son's death, with further details. During the action in which Bonnie lost his life, his ship, the Eversole, was assigned to duty in supporting the landing of the troops on Leyte Island in the Philippines and participated in the 2nd Naval Battle in the Philippine Sea. Bonnie died valiantly and instantly when an explosion took place at 9:29 on October 29th. He died while serving his country with the highest degree of loyalty, is the report of his commanding officer. ____ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Laura Hardy and Martha Bennie had as their guests for Christmas, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Favor and Miss Ruby Hardy. ___ Cadet Nurse Vesta Jackson of Atlanta spent the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson. __ Mrs. L.L. Yarbrough and children are moving into the house recently vacated by Joe Prince and family. __ ROCKALO News Mr. Luther Hill had the misfortune to get thrown out of a wagon and break a few ribs. __ Mrs. Bula Caldwell had the misfortune of getting hurt badly by the mule running over her. __ EPHESUS News Of interest to their many friends it he marriage of Miss Mary Rogers and Mr. Nathan Teal which occured Saturday p.m. with the Rev. L.G. Rogers officiating. We wish for this popular young couple the best of luck and a long happy life together. ___ LOCAL NEWS TEAL - ROGERS Marriage Miss Mary Rogers was married to Mr. Nathan Teal on December 23rd. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Rogers of Roopville, and the granddaughter of the date Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rogers. The bride wore a suit of blue and wore a pearl neckace, a gift of the bridegroom. She is a graduate of Centralhatchee High School. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Teal of Roopville. He was graduated from Centralhatchee High School and is now a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines. _____ Pfc. Lonza Webster Denney, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W.
