H. Earl Burson has recently landed in Italy. __ Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Teal spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rogers and Cornell. __ Sgt. V. Rathmel Stephens from a camp in New Mexico is now visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neal Stephens. __ This community was made sad Sunday night, when the news came that Mr. Lonnie Thornton had passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ina Yates in Arnco. He was well known in this community. His funeral was at Pleasant Grove Baptist church on Monday. __ Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Paschal and James are visiting relatives in Florida. __ Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Jeter were Cleve Jeter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jeter, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Jeter. Jay will soon enter Uncle Sam's service. __ Allen Camp from the Army has recently been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Camp. __ WAYSIDE News The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lane will regret to learn that he has been notified to report back to duty, after being discharged about a year ago. __ Mrs. Sallie Spruill from Bremen, spent last week with her sister, Mrs. Joe Shirey. __ Pvt. Denney Joe Shirey, who has been in a hospital with pneumonia for some time is doing as well as can be expected. __ Mr. and Mrs. Vessie Shirey and children of Hogansville spent a few days last week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shirey. __ Fred Shirey, of the Navy, who has completed his boot training at Camp Peary, VA., spent a few days last week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shirey. __ We are sorry to hear that Claude Vaughn has left our community and moved to Newnan. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mrs. Irene Gladney, wife of Rev. Jewel Gladney was buried here Monday p.m. at two o'clock. She leaves three fine children, her husband and many relatives and friends to mourn her going. __ Mrs. Frank Houston formerly of LaGrange is now making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Prince. __ Mr. and Mrs. Joe Faver and Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Prince made a trip to Newnan on Sunday to visit Phillip Prince of the Navy who is home on furlough. __ Curtis Jackson of the Army is home on a five day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jackson. __ Mrs. Rebecca Kent, who is ill in LaGrange Hospital, has the good wishes of her Centralhatchee friends and relatives for a speedy recovery. __ CARD OF THANKS The family of Jerry Hodge wishes to thank everyone for their kindness during his long illness and following his death, for the beautiful floral offerings. Mr. and Mrs. Vestor Hodge, Bettie Jo, Joyce and Troy Hodge. ________ Nineteen Confederate Veterans and 1,119 widows are on the Confederate pension rolls for January payments. The United Daughters of the Confederacy have added their support to a move for increased pension payments for Georgia's Confederate veterans and their widows, of which approval is being sought at the current session of the Legislature. ___ LOCAL News Mrs. Mary Dabney spent the past week in Birmingham, Ala. __ Mrs. M.W. Lipford visited Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Cone Jr. in Statesboro the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Barker have received notice that their son Sgt. James E. Barker is a prisoner of war in Stalag, Luft. 3, Germany. ____ The hosts of friends of Mrs. J.E. Kent regret to learn of her continues serious condition at the hospital in LaGrange. Some members of the family are with her each day and night. ___ Pct. Claudis Burgess at Camp Blanding, Fla., was seriously injured when he and a friend were enroute home Friday for a hurried visit and wrecked near Albany, where Pvt. Burgess is in a hospital in serious condition. __ Funeral services for little Jerry Hodge, age 6, were held Thursday, Jan. 4th in Franklin Baptist church with burial in Franklin cemetery. He is survived by his parents, 2 sisters, one brother, grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Jones, all of Franklin; grandmother and grandfather Thomas Hodge of Alexander City, Ala; 2 great grandmothers, one great grandfather and a great great grandmother; uncles, Coe Jones of Franklin and Joe Jones of Greenville and a host of other relatives. Rev. Parris, pastor of the Franklin Baptist church, officiated. ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, January 26, 1945 Mr. Frank P. Jackson, 83, of Simpson, died Monday and was buried at Olive Branch Wednesday at 2 o'clock, services by Revs. Oscar Sheets and Estie Wright, Lewis & Lipford directing. He had been a sufferer of cancer for a number of years. Survivors are his wife and two daughters, Mrs. S.R. Heard of Newnan and Mrs. Ike Bell of Simpson. ___ Mr. Joel Stephens died at Alto early yesterday. He was a promising young man and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stephens of Wesley Chapel. ___ Mr. and Mrs. John H. Pike have received a letter from France, signed by Chaplain Cecil J. Pearson in which he commends most highly their son Thomas as "clean in conduct, thought and speech, one of the finest boys I have been privileged to know in my long service in the Army." He also reported Tom well but sometimes "homesick like the rest of us." ___ Pvt. Joseph D. Watson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Watson of Franklin, Georgia has won the right to wear "Boots and Wings" of the United States Army Paratroops. He has completed four weeks of jump training during which time he made five jumps, the last a tactical jump at night involving a combat problem on landing. ___ Cpl. Charlie R. Cook Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Cook, Cooksville, Georgia, armorer in a B-24 Liberator squadron, has been authorized to wear the Distinguished Unit Badge as a member of a heavy bombardment group which has been cited by the War Dept. for outstanding performance of duty in armed conflict with the enemy. Corporal Cook is a graduate of Thomaston high school, year 1932, where he was active in football. Prior to arriving overseas in April of last year, he was at Harvard Army Air Base, Harvard, Neb. Before entering service, Cpl. Cook was employed with the United States Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio, as a clerk. ___ WARESVILLE News We are sorry to learn of the serious illness of Mrs. Frank Royston of Roanoke, and hope she will soon be improving. __ Our good friend and neighbor, Mr. Jim O'Neal of Hogansville, died last week and was buried at Paran last Saturday. They had just recently moved to Hogansville. He died suddenly. ___ Mrs. Vicie Drummond is improving after hurting herself in a fall. __ Mrs. J.T. Middlebrooks is not feeling so good these days. __ William Banks Meacham, Frederick Hunter and Edward McClain will soon go into the service. __ Sorry to learn that Mr. J.A. Jones of Atlanta sustained a broken leg and arm caused by a fall out of a tree. __ John Talley, who is Mr. Will Baird's grandson, is reported killed in action. ___ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ham of LaGrange spent the week with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ham. __ ELERY News We are glad to have Tom Folds and family move into our midst. ___ Lamar Knight, who had been overseas for two years, was home for 30 days recently. __ Norval Walls, one of Uncle Sam's boys, was here with his parents a few days since Christmas. __ Uncle Frank Jackson died on Monday Jan. 22nd. A good man gone. The family has our sincere sympathy. __ FUNERAL SERVICES TUESDAY FOR H.S. JOHNS, A FORMER BELOVED HEARD COUNTIAN Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Franklin Methodist Church for Mr. H.S. Johns, 88, a native and former beloved citizen of Heard County for many years. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.C. Johnson of Lake Highland Methodist church, Birmingham, Alabama, amid a bank of lovely flowers, with many friends attending and interment was in the city cemetery beside his wife who died in 1911. The six surviving and widely scattered children, all of whom had not been together in 25 years, were present at the funeral. They are: O.C., Alexandria, LA.; J.E., Roswell, N.M.; J.L., Deming, N.M.; and C.H. Johns, Artesia N.M.; Mrs. Eloise Haney, Birmingham, Ala.; and Mrs. Mary Gene Wilson, Chicago. _______ RIDGEWAY News Carvie and Mrs. Sheets received a telegram on Friday that their son Cpl. Hermice Sheets had been killed in action on Dec. 31st. His wife, the former Miss Christine Walker, resides with her parents, Buddy and Mrs. Walker of Omaha, Ala. They have the sympathy of many friends in this community. ___ Miss Margaret Cummings of Roanoke. Ala., and Sgt. Jasper Nation were happily married Sunday night Jan. 14th. Sgt. Nation is the son of V.M. and Mrs. Nation and is stationed in Atlanta. ___ LOCAL News Mr. Thomas Awbrey, University of Georgia, was here this week to register for the service. __ S. 2 c Forrest Lee has been home on furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Lee, returning Wednesday to his post at Norfolk, VA. ___ Pvt. N.T. Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Allen, is at home on furlough after 3 years in many locations overseas. __ Mrs. Robin Lockett is spending the week in Atlanta with Mrs. Mary Dabney who has been quite will but improving. ___ Mrs. Sophia Camp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stephens who are under the regime of the Japanese in the Philippines, recently received a card from her parents to the effect that they are well. But the card bore the date of last May, and is the second information that family has received since the Japanese invasion. Mr. Stephens is a brother of Mrs. T.H. Lipford and son of Mrs. Minor Stephens. ___ Mrs. Frank Royston is critically ill at her home in Roanoke, Ala., and the family have despaired of her recovery. She is the eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.L.
