Daniel attended the funeral of their brother-in-law Sunday at Beulah. __ Mr. R.A. Cater has been suffering from bad risings on his hand. __ Mr. I.B. Daniel and daughters visited Mrs. Dorsey Dennis and family of Glenloch on Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bowen of Sylcauga, Ala., Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Smith and Mr. H.O. Cater and family of LaGrange were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Cater. __ Several from this community attended the Sacred Harp Singing Convention at New Springs on Sunday. __ MIDDLEBROOK'S X-ROADS News Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Lucas of Pine Mt. Valley and Mr. and Mrs. Hap Lucas and Melvin of Lanette, Ala., spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Zack Lucas and family. __ Mrs. Emma Almon is still in a rather serious condition. Her children have all been called home. ___ Mr. Winfield Jones of Atlanta was at home for the weekend. __ LOCAL News Mr. G.W. Barker has received a letter from his son, Sgt. James Eddie Barker, that he has been liberated as a German prisoner and was on his way home. __ Mr. Howard Pope, popular citizen and merchant at Loftin, died unexpectedly Wednesday. __ Mrs. Luke Almon, esteemed lady of the Texas community, died on Wednesday. __ MT. PLEASANT News We are sorry to say Mrs. J.T. Nelms has been real sick but is slowly on the mend. __ The many friends of Elmer Kirk will be sorry to know that he has been right sick at his mothers home where they happened to be when he was taken sick. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Memorial services were held at the Baptist Church on Sunday for Sgt. Dewey O. Jackson and Pfc. Paul Yarbrough. ___ Sgt. Jim Finger, former German prisoner, is with his wife, Mrs. Marguerite Turner Finger. __ Mrs. Paul Jackson and children and Mrs. Howell Arrington visited Sanford Shelnutt on Sunday. __ PINE MOUNTAIN News Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Lucas with Mrs. D.L. Crowhorn were in Manchester Saturday shopping. __ Pvt. Harvey Davis of the U.S. Army is home on furlough. __ Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Skelton and Mrs. P.T. Poogue were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Poogue. __ Glad to say Grandpa Dunn is improving. __ Mrs. George Gallops of Columbus spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Moore. __ LOCAL News Mrs. B.F. Eagles Sr., of Wilson, N.C. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Daniel. __ Dr. G.W. Hammond and Mr. Hulet Hammond of Newnan were among Franklin relatives and friends on Tuesday. __ Mr. Jack L. Paschal, 80, died at the State Sanitorium on Monday and was buried here Wednesday. He was reared in Heard county and was always a good citizen. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Mercer Hammond of Newnan and three grandchildren. ___ Mrs. Eva Goodson and Mrs. Melson Goodson spent the day recently at a Newnan hospital with Mr. J.H. Orr, who is there for treatment. ___ Pfc. John P. Burson has received the purple heart for extraordinary services in Germany, the Ardennes and Belgium. HIs wife Mrs. Pauline Burson, resides at Frolona. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, May 18, 1945 CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. Tom Davis was buried here Monday p.m. He died Sunday p.m, at a hospital in Newnan. May the bereaved family look to one who can help in such dark hours. __ Several from Centralhatchee attended the funeral of F.H. Pope at Ephesus last Friday. __ T/Sgt. Hulett Prince was here one day last week. Sgt. Prince has been overseas 43 months. __ Mr. and Mrs. Ernest McLendon visited at Veal and Tyus on Sunday. __ Of interest to their friends is the recent marriage of Miss Rubye Norwood and Delmer Gosdin. __ MIDDLEBROOKS X-ROADS News The death of Mrs. Emma Almon left all the people of our community with saddened hearts. She was loved by both young and old. The family has our deepest sympathy. _____ A reunion was given by the family of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Wingo on Sunday, honoring their son Sgt. Robert N. Wingo. The children present were: Mrs. B.E. MIddlebrooks and son of Macon Mr. and Mrs. James Wingo Mr. and Mrs. Bud Wingo and Beatrice Mr. and Mrs. Royce Middlebrooks and Rudeann Mrs. W.A. We understand Uncle Sam has called him into service. __ Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wingo spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Posey Wingo. __ Mrs. Carey Evans is spending the week with her father, Mr. Luke Almon. __ EPHESUS News Ephesus community lost one of its most useful and valuable citizens last week in the death of Mr. F.H. Pope. His death came unexpectedly though he had been in ill health quite a while. The large and impressive funeral was held at Ephesus church Friday afternoon of last week. Our sympathy goes out to his lonely wife and children. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cash of Shawmut, Ala., spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. John Cavender. __ Uncle Bob Williams is very low at this writing. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Brazil, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rogers, Mr. Glenn Yarbrough and Mr. Jack Mitchell all spent Sunday with relatives on Sand Mountain, Alabama. __ SIMPSON News Mrs. Marchie White and Jerelune were the weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie White last week. __ Miss Margaret Bozeman visited relatives in Roanoke, Alabama last weekend. __ The wedding bells finally did ring at Simpson. Cobben Bozeman got married to Miss Mohee White of Roanoke, Ala. We wish them much luck. ___ Mrs. Mollie White and children visited Mr. and Mrs. Otis Arrington last week. They were proud to see their son and brother Pvt. Lonnie Arrington who came home after staying overseas three years and four months. He will report at Miami Beach, Fla. in a few days. ___ Mr. and Mrs. Theo Vaughan and family visited Mr. and Mrs. Harold Echols last Sunday. __ Pvt. J.T. Gray of Texas, home on furlough, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hardy last Monday and Tuesday. __ ROCKALO News The Sunday guests of Mrs. Fannie George were Mr. and Mrs. Jean McChris and family of Newnan, Mr. and Mrs. Arnel Cater and family and Mr. and Mrs. Paul George. __ Mr. Herman Ackers continues ill at a Roanoke hospital. __ WARESVILLE News Sorry indeed to report the death of Mrs. Luke Almon. SHe was one of our best neighbors, a friend to all and a citizen to be proud of. Mrs. Almon was sick about a week with asthma. She was buried at Paran last Thursday. ____ Sunday was a very pleasant day for Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Kitchens as they had a part or all of their children with them, including new new son-in-law, A Mr. Guthrie who is Sara's husband. A Mr. King visited them also. __ Sorry to learn of the serious illness of Elmer Kirk. __ Mr. John Harry continues real feeble and not able to be up. __ Lieut. and Mrs. Henry Kitchens and baby visited Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Kitchens last week. Lieut. Kitchens has been transferred to Treasure Island in San Francisco. __ Mrs. Ethel Hill has returned to her mother's in South Carolina after spending several months with Mrs. Elton Middlebrooks. __ Mr. Lewis Arrington was buried at Beulah Cemetery one day last week. __ SHORT ITEMS ABOUT THE BOYS IN SERVICE Sgt. Alpheus Wortham has been missing in Germany since April 28th. He entered service in January 1942 and went overseas in March 1945. He was married to the former Miss Christine Griffin of Enon Grove. Before entering service he worked as a sawyer for Mr. Coe Jones. He has six brothers in service overseas. His home was in Wedowee, Ala. ____ PINE MOUNTAIN News Mr. and Mrs. Edd Brazil spent Sunday in LaGrange visiting friends there. __ LOCAL News Many Franklin and Heard county friends will learn with deep regret of the death at Newnan of Mr. H.S. Banta, pioneer jeweler and churchman there. He had been an intimate friend of this editor for more than 60 years. __ Coweta Singing Convention will meet in Newnan Court House Sunday May 20th for their spring session. On Saturday night the Smile A While Quartet will give a concert and will be with us Sunday at our singing. Will be glad to any singers that can to come and be with us. E.C. McKoy ___ Mr. B.J. Milam of Jacksonville, Fla., is spending a while with Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Stephens near Enon Grove. He is 85 years of age and doesn't look 60. He is fond of Heard County and says there is more rest, mental revification and physical ozone in the air here than can be found anywhere else in the United States and he has been all over it. We were delighted to talk with him on a call Wednesday. __ Miss Sallie Caswell of Atlanta, accompanied by her niece, Miss Winifred Heaton, spent several days recently with her brother, Mr. Nathan Caswell. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, May 25, 1945 GEORGE T. DAVIS PASSES TO FINAL REWARD AFTER EXTENDED ILLNESS George T. Davis, 67, well known and popular citizen of Centralhatchee, died at Newnan Hospital May 13th. He had been in failing health for a long while but was seized suddenly, and died shortly after being rushed to the hospital. The funeral was held at Centralhatchee Baptist church May 13th, conducted by Rev. Charles Mathews and directed by Lewis & Lipford. Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Florence Tompkins; son, G.H. Davis of Anniston, Ala.; daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark of Decatur, GA; Evelyn, Virginia, Charles and Johnie Jean of Franklin; one brother, Samuel Davis of Clem, GA; four sisters, Mrs. Carrie Bartlett of Heflin, Ala.; Mrs. Kate Martin, Mrs. Bertha Crawford and Mrs. Josie Staples, all of Carrollton. ____ CENTENARIAN NEGRESS DIED AT 103, BURIED SUNDAY LAST Heard County's only centenarian was old Aunt Gusty Chiles, who had lived many years near Houston. She was sexton for the Western Baptist church, white, for some 40 or 50 years, was an ex-slave, and held in high esteem by all white and colored people. She was buried at Canaan church, colored, Sunday last. ___ STATE LINE News Mrs. Sidney Dollar is spending a while with her sister, Miss Ruby Whitley of Columbus. __ Mr. J.H. Hunter has been ill for some time and had to be taken to the hospital last Thursday. __ Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Birchfield and daughter Jean of LaGrange spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Ike Golden and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Lipham, and Mr. and Mrs. Emmitt Yarbrough of LaGrange, spent the weekend with their mother, Mrs. J.T. Middlebrooks who is sick. They took her home with them so she could be closer to a doctor. __ Mrs. Lucrete Golden and Miss Nelle Golden are leaving for New York on Monday to see husband and brother, Ralph Golden of the Navy. He is expecting to go overseas soon. _____ Miss Elizabeth Golden and Mr. Chambers Almon were married at the home of Mrs. B.S. Sanders in Atlanta on Sunday afternoon last, the home of the bride's sister. Mr. Almon is the only son of Commissioner and Mrs. Z.P. Almon, and attended the State University. The bride was a former popular teacher at Franklin, a graduate of GSCW. ____ F. HOWARD POPE, 58, DIES SUDDENLY F. Howard Pope, died rather suddenly at his home near Ephesus in Heard County around midnight Tuesday. He was born in Heard County, Georgia October 22, 1886, the son of James Benjamin "Bud" and Emma Pritchett Pope. He had lived in the community about 20 years and had been a successful merchant during that time. He was a veteran of World War I. He had been a member of Unity Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Caney Head Methodist church where he joined as a young man. About 23 years ago he married Miss Lula Albia Cook who survives him. Other survivors are three daughters; Mrs. Gene Tragesser of Lancaster, Penn., Mrs. J.F. Terrell Jr. and Miss Lewellyn Pope of Roopville; his father of Franklin; four brothers; Brady Pope of Bowdon, Loonie Pope of Marietta, John Pope of Carrollton, and Gid Pope of Franklin; two sisters, Mrs. J.B. Rollins of Rooopville, and Mrs. Mildred Buchanan of Bowdon. Funeral services were held from Ephesus Baptist church in Heard County at 3 p.m. with Rev. Herman Caldwell, Rev. Guy Rogers and Rev. Ed Caldwell officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Hoke Barker had charge of the music. Interment was in the church cemetery. _______ FUNERAL SERVICE FOR MRS. SALLY YOUNG Mrs. Sally Young, age 84, died at her home near Roopville Monday morning. She had lived in the community where she died 14 years, moving there from near Franklin. She was born in Randolph county, Alabama. She had been in declining health for several years but had been confined to her bed less than a week. She was a member of Salem Methodist Church where she joined in 1912. About 60 years ago, she married John Young, who has been dead for about 45 years. Also preceding her in death was a son Grover, who died in 1909. Surviving are five sons, Henry and Charlie of Roopville, Jim of LaGrange, John of Franklin and Coot of Hogansville; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Faver of Panama City, Fla.; and Mrs. Hassie Potts of Newnan; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from Olive Branch Baptist church near Franklin on Tuesday at 4 p.m. with Rev. J.C. Adams officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. ___ SIMPSON News We were glad to know that Coy Chapman has a discharge from the Army. __ Mrs. John Brazeal has been brought home from the hospital and is resting nicely. __ Mr. and Mrs. Buren spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Arrington. __ Mrs. Lizzie Arrington is spending the week with her son, C.H. Arrington. __ BUS - TRUCK WRECK CLAIMS 1 FATALITY Edmond B. Shelton, 51, of Route 2, Hogansville, an employee of Dixie Cotton Mills, died Saturday morning about 2 o'clock at City-County hospital from injuries received Friday when the bus in which he was riding to work in LaGrange is reported to have been struck from the rear by a truck driven by John W. Hall, colored, of Rome. The accident occurred about 12:25 p.m. on U.S. Highway 27 about three and one half miles from LaGrange, when the bus is said to have slowed to pick up a passenger. Eleven other persons riding in the bus were injured all being taken to the City-County hospital for examination. Besides Mr. Shelton, William Lawhorn sustained a bruised hip, chest and ribs and Lester Newman with leg injuries were admitted to the hospital. The nine other persons injured were given first aid. About 20 persons were riding on the bus Friday to work in textile mills. The bus is owned by John Brazeal of Route 3, Franklin but was driven by Johnny Paschall also of Route 3, Franklin. _______ EPHESUS News Cpl. J.W. Duke, just back from the fighting zone in the European theatre of operations, was recently home for a short visit. He is now at Augusta, Georgia. J.W. has been wounded twice. __ S.P. 1st Class Ford Yates is at home on a visit after spending 32 months overseas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Yates and they also have another son in service, Audry, also in the Pacific on Okinawa. ___ Nathan Teal of the U.S. Marines returned to his post in New York on Monday. ___ This community has approximately 50 boys in the service our our country, two having been killed, Buck Moore and Arvis Adair. One remains a prisoner, Ralph Laster. We are very proud of each boy. __ Sorry to report that Mr. and Mrs. Wade Bell had a wreck Monday with their mule and wagon. Mr. Bell received a broken leg and Mrs. Bell injuries on the head. Both were carried to the hospital. Their little son escaped injury. __ Sorry to report Mrs. Loney Bailey continues ill. __ Mrs. Ina Yates and children visited relatives here this weekend. __ The miscellaneous shower honoring Mrs. Mary Rogers Teal on Saturday p.m., given by Mrs. C.H. Rogers, was largely attended and greatly enjoyed. __ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Faver and Mr. W.W. Faver, Newnan, were Sunday guests of Chief and Mrs. L.L. Adams. __ Mrs. Mamie Reese of Newnan is visiting her sister, Mrs. Eva Goodson. __ Mrs. J.J. Arrington has been quite ill during recent days but seems to be improving. __ Mrs. Lamar Garner has gone to Tampa, Fla., to be with her husband for a while during his training period. __ Mr. L.L. Denney celebrated his 79th birthday at a delightful dinner Sunday last. We regretted very much our inability to attend. Friend Denney and the editor were childhood playmates and have been close friends all through the years, both born the same year and both now 79. ___ We are requested to announce the reunion of the family and friends of the late beloved C.B. Walls at Caney Head on the first Sunday in June. All friends of the family are invited to attend. The day will also be homecoming at Caney Head. ___ Mr. Jim F. Awbrey of Los Angeles, California, is at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warner Awbrey, after being away nineteen years and is meeting many of his boyhood friends. ___ Technician 5th grade John W. Duke Jr. of Route 3, Franklin, GA has arrived at the Oliver General Hospital in Augusta from overseas for further medical treatment. Friends of the new arrival are asked not to telephone because of congested wire facilities. Mail is welcomed by every patient and is handled rapidly. __ Mr. F.H. Conrad is back at his poultry farm after several weeks spent at his home in Ft. Pierce, Fla. and says he'll be here now until the folks run him off.
