BEN F. CAGLE PASSES AFTER PARALYTIC STROKES After a second paralytic stroke late in the week, Mr. Ben Cagle, 65, died Sunday morning about 8 o'clock. He had been in failing health and had to give up government work in which he was engaged in Columbus but appeared to be improving when stricken some two weeks ago. Apparently on the way toward recovery he was again stricken Friday, never rallied and died early Sunday morning. He did some of his first work as a Franklin carpenter,on the Baptist church, coming here from Newnan, where the body laid in state prior to the funeral Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.C. Adams and Rev. E.B. Paris amid an immense bank of flowers and attended by a large concourse of friends. Lewis & Lipford were directors. The widow, formerly Miss Ada V. Archer, survives. They had no children. ___ HEARD COUNTY MAN DROWNED ABOVE STERLING BRIDGE A Heard county man, Frank Combs, sawyer for Golden Brothers Saw Mill, was drowned about 4 p.m. Friday afternoon some distance above Sterling Bridge on the Chattahoochee River in Troup County. Witnesses said that a negro worker and Mr. Combs were in a boat which capsized and that the negro, who could not swim, grabbed Mr. Combs and hung on to him, however he slipped away and drowned. The negro then succeeded in grabbing ahold of the overturned boat and was rescued. Local fire department crews searched for the body of Mr. Combs during the night and early Saturday morning the corpse was found. Funeral services were held at Prospect Sunday afternoon witnessed by a large array of friends and relatives of the popular young man, who is survived by a widow and five children and a number of other relatives. ___ LOCAL News Mr. W.C. Hill spent the weekend in Macon with his son, Mr. Durell Hill. __ Sgt. W.D. Traylor, on furlough from his camp in North Carolina, is visiting Mrs. Traylor. __ EPHESUS News Uncle Bob Williams, 79, passed away Saturday p.m., June 20th and was laid to rest at Bethlehem Primitive Church near Bowdon, on Sunday p.m. Uncle Bob was one of the oldest and most beloved citizens of our community. He had been in very feeble health for more than a year. ___ Cpl. Merlin Rogers is spending a 32 day furlough with his wife and other relatives here. __ Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Frost and Deretta of Florida are spending a few days here with relatives. __ Mrs. Clyde Robinson and Mrs. Claudia Burson have recently been visiting their sister-in-law in Atlanta who is very ill, Mrs. Cliff Barker. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Brazil have returned from a visit with their son Velma in South Georgia who underwent an operation recently. __ Cpl. Ray S. Daniel from Miami Beach, Fla., arrived Monday to spend a furlough with his family here. __ Mrs. S.I. Arrington of Ridgeway has been visiting her granddaughter, Mrs. B.L. Paschal for a few days. __ Mrs. O.D. Loftin has been in Roanoke Hospital for treatment for several days. __ CENTRALHATCHEE News Uncle Ben Eley is very sick. Several of the children and grandchildren are with them. __ Mrs. Paul Jackson and children are visiting relatives in Big Springs, Ala. __ Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Eley were Mr. and Mrs. Buford Daylor of Anniston, Ala. __ Hugh Lee Young of the Army, a former German prisoner, has been visiting his sister Mrs. Kennel Shelnutt. __ Mr. and Mrs. Holland Kight and baby visited Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Kent on Sunday. __ Pvt. Enoch J. Key spent the weekend in Centralhatchee and Roopville. __ Miss Jean Moody returned home with her sister, Mrs. G.W. Jackson and will spend a few weeks. __ ROCKALO News Mrs. Ida Lipham Sills and daughter from Texas have been visiting relatives here the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Will Thaxton visited the latter's parents in Bowdon during the past week, joining them to hear from her half sister Mrs. Pauline Haringdon who is in an Atlanta hospital. __ Look out girls, Billy Shelnutt has treated himself to a Model A Ford. __ MT. PLEASANT News There were quite a few from this community who attended the sad funeral of Willie Frank Combs who was drowned Friday. He leaves a wife and five children under eight years old. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved and especially to the dear mother Mrs. Charlie Combs. ___ We are sorry to say that Jesse Arnett has been very much under the weather but is improving some. __ We are glad to say that Elmer Kirk is able to be out. He and his wife spent Friday with his brother Pope and wife up near Chattanooga and they all came down Saturday and attended church. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, July 13, 1945 GRADY FUTRAL DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS Mr. Grady Futral, 46, died at a hospital in LaGrange early Monday morning after a short but severe illness of malarial fever, from which he suffered much. The funeral was held Wednesday at 11 a.m., conducted by his pastor Rev. W.L. Eley and directed by Lewis & Lipford at the family church, Olive Branch, with interment in the well kept church yard. Survivors are his widow, one small son also very ill of malarial fever; the mother, Mrs. S.A. Futral; brothers, O.W. Futral of Akron, Ohio; Frank Futral of St. Louis; Rufus, Lewis, John Henry and Otis Futral and one sister Mrs. Bryon Cook of Franklin. ____ MRS. J.J. HARRY DIES AT AGE OF 82 Mrs. John J. Harry, age 82, of the Glenn community, passed away at the Bonner Hospital, Roanoke, on June 12th. She had been very active, seeing that her sick husband had every need until she had the misfortune of falling and breaking her leg. Mrs. Harry is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. aaron Sheppard of Glenn and Mrs. C.H. Russell of Lanett, Ala; five sons, W. J., W., D.S. of Glenn, A.L. and E.H. of LaGrange; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted from Bethany Christian Church by Rev. Penn of Roanoke and Rev. C.W. Hanson of LaGrange. Burial was at the Rock Mills Cemetery. ___ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Prince and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Faver visited Mrs. Phillip Prince at the hospital in Newnan on Sunday. __ Leaving for Camp Wahsega on Monday were Jimmie Knight, Merlin Merrill and Zane and Shelby Chambers. __ EPHESUS News Of interest to her many friends in the community is the marriage of Miss Theo Prince to Bill Clegg both of LaGrange. The wedding occurred Friday July 8th with th Rev. W.L. Eley performing the ceremony. __ Hulet Prince has received an honorable discharge from the Army after four years of service and is now at home to the delight of his many friends. __ Mr. and Mrs. Amon Upchurch of Newnan were visitors in this community on Sunday. __ Mr. R.A. Cater remains unable to be brought home from the Lawson General Hospital in Atlanta. __ Mrs. Jim Rollins had a stroke of paralysis last week and is very low. __ Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Geter were Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Hammond and Mr. and Mrs. John Geter. __ Sunday guests of Mr. J.B. Prince and family were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mosley and Joan of Hogansville; Mr. and Mrs. James Laster and Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clegg of LaGrange. __ Mr. and Mrs. Amos Culpepper of Bowdon visited Mrs. W.M. Culpepper on Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Armstrong of Glenloch spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Edd Wilson. __ Cpl. Roy Daniel who is home on furlough has been laid up with an attack of malaria. __ LOCAL News Mrs. G.A. Adams is visiting her sister Mrs. J.H. Daniel is Cedartown this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Stanton Adams are spending a few days with relatives in Sarasota, Florida. __ Mrs. Ed Settles of Winder is spending the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Paschal. __ Mrs. J.L. Daniel spent a day or two in Atlanta this week with her sister, Miss Katherine Butler who returned with her for recuperation. __ A birthday dinner was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Hines on Sunday, July 1st, honoring Mrs. Hines' birthday. Those enjoying the happy occasion were Mr. and Mrs.Hines; Mrs. R.E. Keas, Jane and Roberta of Savannah; Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Jackson and Rebecca of Gadsden, Ala; Mrs. C.R. Perdue; Mrs. T.E. Miles and Judy; Mrs. F.P. Groover, Billie Ann and Rita; and Mr. L.K. Rooks, all of Bowdon. ___ Mrs. Allie Brown and Mrs. W.M. Brown and children of Atlanta are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Finch at their lovely country home near town. __ Mrs. Berta Belau of Adams, Wis., will leave in a few days for her home after spending a month with her sister, Mrs. G.L. Pippin. __ Mrs. J.J. Arrington has returned from the hospital in Atlanta and to the regret of her friends seems not much improved. __ LEGAL NOTICE All crditors of the estate of Nancy B.
