White Sr. have moved to Bremen. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hosey bought the White's house. __ Uncle John and his Midnight Ramblers entertained at the gym Saturday night. __ Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jackson and Mr. Ben Jackson attended the funeral of Mr. John Moses at Big Springs, Alabama on Sunday. __ Mrs. Amos Duke and children spent the weekend with her parents in Alabama. __ GLENN Community News Sunday morning early, Mrs. Hattie Lane, baby sister to John Crouch, who is, as some of you know, my father, came. The first thing she did was to grab my two and one half year old son and hug him to her. I know she was thinking of her own little grandson Donald Hicks who was accidentally killed last year. __ Robert Whitley is a civilian again. I do not know any of Robert's plans for a future but knowing Robert, I believe his plans are all constructive. ___ ROCKALO News Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bryan and family were all smiles Sunday night when Cpl. James T. Bryan came home with a discharge. He was gone three years and served 31 months overseas. Many of his friends were at his home Sunday night to welcome him home. __ Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gay and family spent a few days with relatives here. Bill is back from the Pacific with a discharge. __ CHURCH News Last Sunday after preaching at Centralhatchee we drove down to Darden Spradlin's where we enjoyed a sumptuous barbecue dinner. They were celebrating the birthday of Darden and his father-in-law, J.O. Ballard. They have the same birthday, and Brother Ballard says that Darden is as old as he is. Regardless of Darden's age, he and his wife, together with the others helped serve a very appetizing dinner. Darden sold his home sometime ago and is living at the old Trupp Home with Arnold. I suspect that Arnold and his wife had a finger in that dinner. By the way, Darden expects to build him a new home on the Centralhatchee highway this spring. He got started on this Heard county water and no other water is quite so good as Heard county affords. J.C.A. ___ GRAND OLD LADY PASSES TO HER FINAL REWARD Mrs. Nicey Cooley, 88, who died at her home a few days ago, mere mention of which made made last week, during her long life was an outstanding character, and loved and honored by all who knew her. She was born and reared in Heard County and had lived here all of her life. Funeral and interment was at Mt. Pleasant where she was a member, and she was laid to rest beside her husband, who preceded her 43 years ago. She is survived by one son, Linton Cooley. ____ WOODLAWN News Our nephew, Sgt. Julian Glass and his bride from California, are visiting Coweta homefolks. __ The R.L. Morgan family, who brought a home, the old Hez Yates place, have moved there from near LaGrange. They are painting the walls and peeking up the place all possible for the bad weather. ___ EPHESUS News Mr. W.L. Rogers continues ill at the Bowdon Hospital. He shows very little improvement. __ Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Smith of LaGrange, spent the weekend here with Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Cater and Garland. Hubert has just returned from a hospital in Atlanta after a prolonged illness. __ Cpl. Ralph Laster has recently returned to Oliver General Hospital in Augusta. __ Mrs. Willie Crews of Moreland spent the weekend with relatives here. __ Cpl. Merlin Rogers from Japan has arrived to the States and will soon be home at the bedside of his ill father. __ Our community welcomes Mr. and Mrs. Travis Haynes who have moved back into the old home place. __ Mr. Raymond Brazil and Miss Grace Parish of near Roanoke, were recently married. We wish for them a long and happy life. __ Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Janey and children have been at the bedside of their granddaddy, Mr. Moses, at Big Springs. He is seriously ill. __ The community singing was at Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rogers last Sunday night and will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hulet Prince the second Sunday night. So please remember to come out. ___ Mr. Buel Payton who has just returned from overseas has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. George Rogers. __ SHORT ITEMS ABOUT THE BOYS IN SERVICE James H. Bowen is expected home with a discharge from the Navy this week, recently being discharged from a hospital on Treasure Island. __ S-Sgt. John J. Heard came home January 16th with an honorable discharge. He was overseas 20 months in the Pacific. He has been in service 3 years. He wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with 2 battle stars, American Theatre, good conduct and Victory ribbons. He married the former Miss Ruby Forbes of Hogansville where he now resides with his wife and son. __ One of the happiest mothers in Franklin last week was Mrs. Verna May, when her son Jack, a former radioman of the Navy arrived home from Jacksonville, Fla., with his discharge. Jack was in the Navy some twenty-eight months and had served overseas fifteen months aboard the U.S.S. LSM 58. His ship sailed in the waters of almost every Pacific island, landing on Japan three different times with troops and cargo. Jack left his ship at Saipan in the Mariana Islands and proceeded home via the U.S.S. New Kent, landing in San Francisco on the fourth of January. From California he was sent to Jacksonville for discharge, then arriving home among his relatives and friends the 18th of this month. HIs sister, Mrs. Thomas Head with son and daughter, were anxiously awaiting his arrival. Mrs. Head and children returned to their home in Columbus on Tuesday. Jack, a former Franklin High School graduate, plans to attend the University of Georgia after spring holidays in March. We know Jack will make good for he is one of Heard county's most popular and outstanding young men. At present he will be with his mother who resides here at Franklin. __ CAMPGROUND News Born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Harris, a girl. __ Mrs. Emma Glover is very sick at this writing. She is still in LaGrange with her daughter, Mrs. Carey Middlebrooks. __ Mr. Austin Davis is building himself a house on the highway close to the campground. __ Mr. Hubert Harris just home from the Army with a discharge, bought a car. Look out girls. ___ LOCAL News James M. Lee left January 17th for the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego. __ Our good friend and suscriber, Van Vaughan and his son Nunnally Vaughan of Vienna, were among Heard county relatives and friends last week. We were delighted to see him as a real friend all these years, since we were children. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, February 8, 1946 SHORT ITEMS ABOUT THE BOYS IN SERVICE Tech. Sgt. Charlie M. Arrington came home with an honorable discharge from service. He was overseas 22 months and in service 4 years. He wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon, Good Conduct, Pre-Pearl Harbor and Victory Ribbons. Before entering service he worked for the Dixie Mills in LaGrange. He is the son of Mr. Hoyt Arrington in Franklin, Rt. 4. __ S 1-c Doyle Heard came home January 19th with an honorable discharge from the Navy. He was in service for 19 months in the Pacific. He wears the Asiatic- Pacific ribbon with 1 bronze star, Philippines Liberation ribbon with 1 star, and the Victory Medal. He is the youngest son of Mrs. Perry Heard of Franklin. Before entering service he worked at Callaway Mills. ___ ShipCook Third Class, Junior Pike is home on a 30 day leave from the Navy. He has been in the Navy for three years and overseas for 23 months in the Pacific. He wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with 1 bronze star and Philippines Liberation ribbon with 1 star and the Victory Medal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Pike of Franklin. Before entering service he was with the shipyard at Savannah. He now has to report to the Naval Air Station in Atlanta. ___ Radioman Tech. 1st Class Wesley Cooper came home recently with an honorable discharge from the Navy. He was with the Naval Radio Research Laboratory for 27 months and in the Pacific for 7 months. He wears the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon witha bronze star for operation in the China Sea area, also a letter of commendation from Admiral Kirk, Amphibious Fleet Commander for research with Radio Control Equipment. He is a graduate of Franklin High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Cooper of Franklin, Rt. 4. ___ Sgt. Carl L. Arrington came home recently with an honorable discharge from service. He was in the China-Burma theatre of operations, overseas for 18 months and in the Army for three years and 7 months. He wears the Asiatic- Pacific ribbon with 1 battle star, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the A.P. Badge and American Theatre ribbon. He is a graduate of Centralhatchee High School and formerly worked with the N.Y.A. woodshop at Franklin and Callaway Mills. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Arrington of Frolona. __ ROCKALO News Mr. and Mrs. Artie Wright and family of LaGrange were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bryan. __ Mrs. John Thaxton is on the sick list. Hope she will be up soon. __ Mrs. William Rogers has been visiting her daughter Mrs. T.O. Yates. __ SIMPSON News Mr. Wiley Thompson is sick. Hope that he will soon be well again. __ S. 2-c Bernard Davis from San Diego, Calif., spent a few days recently with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Davis. __ Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spradlin, Mrs. Hulet Heard, Robert and Opal Vaughan attended the funeral of Mrs. Tom Gore at Ridgeway last Thursday. She was Robert and Opal's grandmother. ___ Mr. Arnold Spradlin and family were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Buren Spradlin on Sunday. __ Mr. Huel Hester from West Georgia College, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Craven. __ RIDGEWAY News Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Webb and children of LaGrange, visited Mr. and Mrs. Umphrey Hood last weekend. __ Funeral services were held here Thursday last for Aunt Eliza Gore, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mable Lipham, in LaGrange. Services were conducted by Rev. Roland Melvin, pastor of the Gray Hill Church of God of which Mrs. Gore was a member. Survivors include one son, Mr. L.J. Vaughan of Frolona, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Hammett and Groober funeral directors were in charge. ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, February 22, 1946 MRS. B. ETHEL HAMM DIES AT CENTRALHATCHEE Mrs. B. Ethel Hamm, age 66, died at her home in Centralhatchee near Franklin on Thursday morning Feb. 7th following an illness of one week. She was born in Heard county October 20, 1879, the daughter of George Moore and Amanda Wyatt Moore. She had lived in Centralhatchee for the past 24 years, moving there from the Bethel community north of Centralhatchee. Three children preceded her in death, a son and one daughter, who died in infancy and another daughter, Mrs. Grady Brazil, who died in 1918. She is survived by her husband Joseph W. Hamm to whom she was married 48 years ago; two sons, Lewis Hamm of Whitesburg, GA and J.W. Hamm of LaGrange, GA; two daughters, Miss Myrle Hamm of Monroe, GA and Miss Ila Hamm of Atlanta; two brothers, Henry W. Moore of Chickamauga; Hope Moore of Cedartown; four sisters, Mrs. W.A. Bonner of Carrollton; Mrs. H.G. Vaughan of Newnan; Mrs. C.T. Simonton and Mrs. A. Wayne Wortham of Centralhatchee. Funeral services were held from the Centralhatchee Baptist Church on Friday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Gordon Willingham officiating. G.W. Barker had charge of the music. Interment was in the church cemetery. ______ CENTRALHATCHEE News G.W. Jackson is home with his wife and children with a discharge from the Navy. __ Mr. Hoyt Cooley is in the Carrollton Clinic following an operation. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hamm of LaGrange spent Sunday with Mr. Joe Hamm. __ SHORT ITEMS ABOUT THE BOYS IN SERVICE Sgt. Lonnie Bell has recently returned to the states and received his honorable discharge. He had been in the Army for three and one half years. __ S-Sgt. Jesse Jackson has arrived home from India where he had been the last fourteen months. He has been in the service four years. He and his wife and Jimmie visited Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Hines last week and have gone to Gadsden, Ala., to make their home. __ Sgt. Tommie Crenshaw came home this week with an honorable discharge but re- enlisted for 4 years. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Crenshaw of Franklin. Before entering the Marines he was in the C.C.C. two and one half years. __ Pfc. Morris Kirk came home recently with an honorable discharge from the Army. He was in the Army for 3 years and 2 months. He was overseas for 21 months. He was in the Eastern Theatre of Operations. He wears the E.T.O. ribbon with 2 battle start, the Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Kirk of Franklin. ___ Sgt. Thomas Sheets came home recently with an honorable discharge from service. He was in the service for 3 years and 3 months. He was overseas 16 months. He was first in the Eastern Theatre of Operations and then transferred to the Pacific. He wears the E.T.O. ribbon with 2 battle stars, Asiatic- Pacific ribbon, Victory Medal, American Theatre ribbon and Good Conduct. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sheets of Frolona. He was a farmer before going into service. __ PINE MOUNTAIN News Mr. and Mrs. George Gallops of Columbus spent the weekend with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Moore. __ Pvt. Kenneth Lucas of Fort Bragg, N.C. is at home on furlough. The Army must agree with Pvt. Lucas, he weighs 190 pounds and looks fine. __ Mr. and Mrs. Billie Colquit of LaGrange spent the weekend with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Swann. __ Mr. Baskin Hinds has been real sick but is some better at this writing. ___ EPHESUS News Mrs. John Cavender continues ill at the Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta after a serious operation. __ Mr. W.L. Rogers continues ill at the Bowdon Hospital. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Armstrong announce the birth of a son Feb 8th at the home of her parents. She was the former Miss Glimer Wilson. __ Mr. C. Yearwood is under the weather, it is reported. __ Mrs. Mae Rogers of Tyus and Mrs. Clyde Robinson celebrated their birthdays together Sunday at the home of Mrs. Robinson. Both families were present. __ SIMPSON News The workers at Simpson community took advantage of the pretty weather Monday and got to work. The logs are now at the saw mill to be made into flooring for New Springs Church. Praise goes to Mr. Walter Bozeman who isn't a member of the church, for bringing his fine team of mules and giving both his time and that of his team in piling the logs. Also, Mr. Ridley Cavender, not a member of the church, who gave his time freely and who dropped this thought "anybody who isn't willing to help out in school and church isn't much good to this community." ___ Mr. Bonnard Dean and family visited Mr. Dovard Dean and Miss Sylvia Marshall on Sunday. __ Mrs. Winnie Chatman and baby visited Mrs. Wylie Thompson on Sunday. __ Mrs. Bird Bell was the weekend guest of Mrs. Burie Spradlin. __ Glad to report Mr. Wylie Thompson much better. __ Dura and Ann Hardy spent Sunday with Dera White. __ Mrs. Charlie White is able to go back to work after having the measles. __ Mrs. Lula Hardy visited Mrs. Bea Pope on Monday. __ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. James Gallant of LaGrange, were here Saturday, due to the critical illness of Mrs. E.E. Lewis, who is improving now. __ Mr. Charles Bledsoe returned Monday from Newnan Hospital. His friends wish him an early and complete recovery. __ Mrs. J.W. Daniel of Newnan, formerly of Franklin, is much improved after being seriously ill and in Newnan Hospital. __ Mrs. J.R. Hawk announces the marriage of her daughter Miss Florence Sophire Hawk of Newnan, formerly of Franklin, to Russell Davis Brockway of Luthersville. The ceremony was solemnized at the Central Baptist Church in Newnan on January 27th by the Rev. Phillip J. McLean. Mr. Brockway recently received his discharge from the Army after serving five and one half years. He served twenty months in the Pacific Theatre.
