McCutchen Sr., I should like to say that I am happy to know you lived to enjoy your eightieth birthday. And to to the Junior, P.T., I should like to say that I saw your picture in the Constitution and am glad to know one of the Heard county boyus is reaching up in politics. Reach on, perhaps the White House is not as far as it seems. I wonder if I am wrong in believing Mrs. Susie Middlebrooks is the Mt. Pleasant correspondent. I am so sorry that you suffer as you do. I do know that the pain in the body does not hurt so bad if the mind can be kept constantly pleasantly employed. My mother has taught me that in her years of suffering. She has her knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilt box near her at all times. She delights in teaching others to do the things she does. She has taught my sister-in-law, Opelia Starnes, how to crochet her doll a cap. She has taught me how to crochet and I saw her patiently teaching Mrs. Gertrude Knight how to knit. I am going to let her teach me just as soon as I can use my head without having to use my hands to hold it up. I have been wondering where Helen Wilson is. Mrs. Gertrude Knight told me yesterday while she visited us that Helen is in Philadelphia with Hazel. I did not get to see her after she came home. Helen, as you remember, is our only girl who joined up with the service during the war. She served in Washington. I said to her "Of what does your work consist?" She answered in that soft voice, "Processing war films". That is all I know. I wouldn't ask more since I did not want her to know how extremely ignorant I really was; but honest I'm still at a loss. Perhaps you who have read more widely can see her in your mind's eye as she performed her duty as a Wave. Lawton Wilson is my informant and surely he knows, being Walter's brother, that Walter, who played with the Detroit Tigers las year, has been sold by his club. He plays with Dallas, Texas next year. Walter Wilson is a career boy. All his life he has dreamed of going places in baseball. He and I have discussed careers quite a bit, since I have gnawing at the core of me to write. Last year in March Walter helped Dad pull and haul corn. It was just before he left for his spring training and naturally the talk was on baseball and what he planned to do when he was too old to play. "I'll tell you Sara, I want to buy me a farm." "Do you have your location picked out?" Oh Yes, but I do not k now for sure whether I can get the man in the mood to sell." Just before he left for Lakeland, Florida recently, he got the man, whom some of you know is Mr. I.Q. Adams Jr., in the mood to sell, and he bought his farm. Beyond that, I know nothing. Farming started up at our place this morning. My husband cranked "Old George" as he calls the old W-30, and is harrowing land. He plans to make terraces and tear up the place in general, while I watch the clouds and shake my head. The peachtree out the north window keeps trying to pretty herself up. I'm just afraid she will change her pink coat when she gets it, for one of brown and the jars will be empty this time. I hope I'm wrong. ________ SHORT ITEMS ABOUT THE BOYS IN THE SERVICE Motor Mechanic Mates 2nd class T.J. (Rob) Davis Jr. and Douglas Cook came home recently with honorable discharges from the Navy.
