Sunday was the birthday of both Mr. and Mrs. Homer Darden, Mrs. Williams' parents. __ Friends were interested to learn of the marriage of Mr. Willie Hope Jackson, a native of Corinth, and Mrs. McCoon of Hogansville. __ FAMILY REUNION There will be a family reunion at J.B. Wright's home on Sunday, September 21st. Everybody is invited to come and bring a basket lunch. J.B. Wright, Route 3 ___ SINGING CONVENTION SEPT. 28th The Heard County Singing Convention will be held at the Centralhatchee Baptist Church Sept. 28th. All singers and lovers of music are invited to attend. Basket lunch will be served at the noon hour. Bura Spradlin, Chairman. ___ ELERY News Many, many people gathered together at the family reunion at Mr. Folds' on the first Sunday. It was a glorious day for all. New acquaintances were made and old ones renewed. A delicious table lunch was set before us with plenty of barbecue. Everyone ate to his delight. In the afternoon singing and preaching was enjoyed by some while others engaged in making pictures. __ STATE LINE News Sunday School is progressing nicely at Union Grove. __ Mr. Otis O'Neal had an accident last week while working at the saw mill. A limb fell across his nose and it has given him quite a bit of trouble. __ Mr. and Mrs. T.J. LULA MAE PRINCE Mrs. Lula Mae Prince, age 49, died at her home in the Ephesus Community of Heard County on Thursday afternoon. She was born in Heard County, Georgia January 8, 1898, the daughter of Joe Eley and Ollie Walls Eley. She had lived in the Ephesus Community since 1927, moving there from Antioch. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church where she joined in 1926. Two sons preceded her in death, Brewe Lee who died in infancy and Hubert who died at 6 years of age. She is survived by her husband James B. Prince, to whom she was married May 10, 1914; three sons, James H. Prince, Wayne Prince and J.B. Prince, all of Roopville; daughters, Mrs. James Laster of Roopville and Mrs. Willard Clegg of LaGrange, Georgia; one grandchild; her mother of Hogansville; one brother Robert Eley of Hogansville; six sisters, Mrs. Clara Hyatt of Roopville, Mrs. Stella McWhorter of Franklin Mrs. Verna Kidd, Mrs. Parrie Staples, Mrs. Laura Mosley and Mrs. Fannie Hanson all of Hogansville, Georgia. Funeral services were held from Veal Baptist church on Friday September 19th at 2 p.m. with Rev. Guy Rogers officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Hoke Barker had charge of the music. Interment was in the Ephesus Cemetery. _____ REV. LEWIS N. CLAXTON, FORMER HEARD COUNTIAN, PASSES IN ANNISTON, ALA. The Rev. Lewis N. Claxton, 64, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Anniston, Alabama for 37 years, died of a heart attack September 10th at his home at 1336 Pine Avenue, Anniston, Ala. He had been in failing health for some time. The Rev. Mr. Claxton, active in church public and civic live in Anniston for nearly four decades, went to Anniston in 1910 as pastor of the First Baptist Church. Previously he was pastor of Unity Baptist Church in LaGrange, GA, and also Union Grove in Glenn community. He was a member of the Anniston Board of Education for years, retiring only last year from the school board because of declining health. He also was active in fraternal circles being a member of the Masons and Shrine. The Reverand Claxton was honored several times by civil clubs for outstanding service to the city, including his efforts in behalf of the Community Chest Appeal which he once headed. As pastor of the First Baptist Church, he watched the congregation grow from a small number into one of the largest in the city, and at the time of his death was the leading church movement to build a new edifice to replace the one destroyed by fire several years ago. He was a member of the State Baptist Sunday School Board and the Southern Baptist Convention. Born in Heard County, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Claxton, three daughters; Mrs. Mary Lou Wood, Mrs. Lena Hara Harris and Mrs. Lannelle Montgomery, all of Anniston; two sons, the Rev. Perry Claxton of Talladega and the Rev. Lewis N. Claxton Jr., of Winterboro, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs. Charlie Caswell of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Gussie Kennington of Shawnut, Ala., and Mrs. Charlie Dansby of Durant, Okla., and nine grandchildren. ____ MR. SHERMAN TAYLOR, FORMER HEARD COUNTIAN, IS BURIED IN FLORIDA Mr. Sherman Taylor, promiment business man of Gainesville, Fla., died suddently in his sleep at his home on Tuesday morning Sept. 16th. He was prominent in civil affairs and fraternal organizations. Mr. Taylor was past Grand Master of the Masons in Florida and an honorary Past Grand Master of the Masons in Georgia. He has a host of friends in Georgia and Florida and will be greatly missed by all. Funeral services were held in Gainesville, Florida on Thursday Sept. 18th with the Masons in charge of the services. He is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren of Gainesville, Fla. ____ CENTRALHATCHEE News Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Ballard attended a birthday dinner Sunday at the home of their sister, Mrs. Wilson Shirey at Bowdon. __ Mr. and Mrs. Cleburn Jackson have moved into the residence of Mrs. Laura Hardy, recently. __ Miss Sara Wortham and Mrs. Earnest McLenden are teaching in LaGrange. __ Miss Essie Mae Strickland of Crawford Long Hospital, visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Larry Strickland on Monday. __ Mrs. Joe Merrill celebrated her 77th birthday on Sunday. In spite of Mrs. Mae Denney's long illness, she greets all of her visitors with a smile of cheer. __ Mr. and Mrs. Weems McIntosh spent Friday afternoon with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Buddie Moore of Bowdon, GA. __ We were made sad when we heard of the death of Mrs. Jim Prince. The family has our deepest sympathy. We feel that our church as lost a grand member. __ EPHESUS News Our community received one of its worst shocks Thursday at noon, September 18th, when news was spread abroad that Mrs. J.B. (Mae) Prince had suddenly come to her death. Mrs. Prince, age 49 years, was one of the community's most highly esteemed women. She will be greatly missed by everyone as she was such a useful lady in our school, church and throughout the neighborhood. She was indeed a christian woman. She had a word of cheer for the sick whom she visited so often. Funeral services were conducted in the Veal Church on Friday afternoon by Rev. L. Rogers. The family has our sincere sympathy. ________ Mrs. Claudia Burson underwent an operation in the City-County Hospital at LaGrange on Sunday. Her many friends wish her a speedy recovery. __ Mrs. William Miles was on the sick list last week. Her relatives from Columbus visited them throughout last weekend. __ Mrs. Roxey Williams has returned from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Cora Robinson and family in Hogansville. She was accompanied home Saturday by Mr. Vender and Hassel Robinson. ___ Mr.and Mrs. W.E. Frost, and Mr. and Mrs. Troy Daniel attended a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Kirby on Sunday in Talladega, Ala. __ The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Duffy will regret to learn of his continuous illness at the St. Joseph Infirmary in Atlanta. We wish for his speedy recovery. Mrs. Duffy has also been on the sick list but has improved. __ Mrs. Carrie Eley of Hogansville arrived Sunday for an extended visit with her brother, Mr. J.B. Prince. __ Mr. and Mrs. Walter Yates attended the barbecue dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Wright on Sunday. __ The community singing was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rogers Sunday night and will be in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Paschal next Sunday night. __ WELCOME Community News The birthday dinner honoring Mr. Robert Bailey at the home of his son, Mr. Raymond Bailey, on Sunday, was well attended and enjoyed by all, each one wishing Mr. Bailey many more birthdays. __ We are very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. J.B. Prince, sister of Mrs. Clara Hyatt. All the bereaved have our sympathy. __ Mr. and Mrs. Moss of Rome, spent the weekend with Mrs. Shirley Tuggle and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. Balnton Tuggle and children of near Antioch, spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Tuggle. __ CAMPGROUND News Mrs. John Nelms, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Minick and children, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Nelms of Quantico, GA and Harvey Nelms and son Hugh were the Sunday guests of their mother and grandmother, Mrs. Minick who is still doing good. __ Mr. Edward Davis happened to get a scratch on his foot and his now suffering agony with the result, and under the care of a doctor. He has taken four penicillin shots Saturday. Rogers and Mr. Frank Hamrick was enjoyed by a large crowd with all their children being present. They received many nice gifts. ____ The birthday dinner in honor of Mrs. Dillie Jordan was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Caldwell on Sunday with all of her children being present. __ Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Janney had a birthday dinner in honor of Mr. Burl Arrington of Franklin and little Harold Janney. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Burl Arrington of Franklin Mr. and Mrs. Zolly Gay of Omaha, Alabama Mr. Jessie Janney, and Miss Lois Janney of Ridgeway ___ We are sorry report that Mr. Tom Duffey who has been on the sick list was rushed to the Bowdon Hospital on Sunday and on to an Atlanta hospital on Monday.
