GOSS MATTOX DIES AT HOGANSVILLE HOME Mrs. Goss Mattox died at her home in Hogansville, Feb 4th, after an illness of several months. She is survived by her husband, one sun, Kendrick Mattox, and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur C. Smith Jr. and Mrs. Ed Strain Jr., all of Hogansville; her mother, Mrs. A.C. Ware of Newnan; her sisters, Mrs. Ralph Sanders of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Wade Stallings of Newnan, and Mrs. Robert Williams of Greenville, Ala. Her brothers are J.B. Ware of Detroit and A.C. Ware Jr. of Liberty, S.C. Mrs. Mattox was the former Miss Johnnie Mae Ware of Cooksville, the daughter of Mrs. A.C. Ware and the late Mr. Ware. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Askew-Trippe Funeral Home in Hogansville with the Rev. Mr. Smith pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Corinth Cemetery where her father is buried. Mrs. Mattox was considered quite an authority on antiques and had completely furnished her lovely home on Telaiferro Drive in old pieces of rare beauty. ____ WELCOME Community News Relatives of Mrs. William Gentry from Phil Campbell, Ala., spent part of last week with her. I was unable to learn their names. __ Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Dowdy and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bailey spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Dowdy. __ Those enjoying the surprise birthday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bailey on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Gentry and children, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bailey of Columbus, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Bailey and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bailey and children. All had a nice time and wished her many more birthdays. __ Mrs. P.W. Crockett was ill last week but is improving. __ Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Tuggle spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Moss of near Cartersville. __ Mr. Clyde Ragland who has been with Western Electric Co. in Chattanooga, Tenn., has recently been transferred to Nashville, Tenn. __ Mrs. Preston Walker is working at the hosiery mill in Carrollton. __ LOCAL News Friends of Mrs. Joe Hannah will be glad to learn that she is improving after her recent illness. __ Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Dennis and Mrs. Grady Dennis and Jacqueline spent Sunday in Five Points, Ala. with relatives. __ Mrs. V.O. Smith and Sally are in New Smyrna, Fla., the guests of Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Few. __ Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Green of Opelika, Ala., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Awbrey. __ CORINTH News Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jackson have added greatly to the beauty of their home by having asbestos siding placed over the weather boarding. __ The old Hogan home place is being remodeled and made into two attractive apartments. With asbestos siding added, wiring for electricity and a general going over inside it ought to attract good tenants. __ EPHESUS News, by Miss Beaulah Daniel Mr. Lum Holloway has pneumonia, it is reported. We hope he will soon be well again. __ Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Sheets visited their mother on Saturday who is ill at Red Oak. __ Mrs. Bill Martin has been ailing with rheumatism. __ WARESVILLE News, by Mrs. Elton Middlebrooks So sorry to report the death of Mrs. Pearl Jackson. She was sick about two weeks. Was buried at Glenn. She will surely be missed in this community and has a host of relatives and friends who were saddened by her death. __ Mr. Ernest, who is a brother-in-law of Mrs. John McCullough and Mrs. E.S. Dennis, was buried this week also. __ Joel Stephens, who now weighs about 275 pounds, came by the other day. We hardly knew him. When he left here to go to Florida he was just a kid. __ Mr. Walter Cook from Chipley spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Cook. __ Mrs. Daniel, mother of Mrs. Dewey Daniel has been suffering with a bad leg. __ Mrs. Nina Harry is sick this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sanders have been sick but are improving. __ Mr. Stephens from Arkansas spent last week with his brother Tip. __ Mr. H.C. Jackson will made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Bud Wingo in LaGrange. __ Mr. Sam Arnett fell a few days ago and hurt himself real bad. __ Mrs. Susie Thomas, sister of Mr. W.J. and J.H. Gosden celbrated his 55th birthday at his home Sunday. Those attending the dinner were: Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Wilson and James, Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Gosden and Nancy, Mr. and Mrs. Z.F. Wilson and Shirley, Mr. and Mrs. John Gosden, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Gore, Mr. and Mrs. Delma Gosden and Kenneth and Misses Mary Ellen and Mertie Will Noles. __ ELERY News Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Earwood and family of Ephesus visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Folds this weekend. __ There was a birthday dinner given at Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Wright's Sunday Feb. 22, honoring their twin sons' sixth birthday. __ There was a surprise birthday supper given last wednesday night in honor of Mrs. J.L. Marshall and Dr. Roy L. Denney. Those who attended were Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Barker, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Marshall and family, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Marshall and family, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Barker and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hopson and family and Mr. J.L. Wood who continues her long illness. Mr. H.B. Burson is receiving treatment at the Roanoke Hospital. __ Mrs. Bill Smith spent several days last week with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Wright near Greenville, Mr. Wright (Eunice) continues in very poor health. __ Mrs. Nina Kelley and children visited her mother, Mrs. Herman Reeves near Bowdon on Saturday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Howard Loftin of Newnan spent the weekend here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Hoke Loftin. __ Mr. Enoch Butler and Mr. Blake Camp of Bowdon spent the weekend in Nashville, Tenn. and attended the Grand Ole Opera there. __ Recent visitors in the Daniel home include Mrs. Kermit Cavender, Mrs. J.B. Laster of LaGrange and Mr. and Mrs. Troy Daniel. __ Mr. and Mrs. Hughie Shelnutt of LaGrange spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Hester. __ ROOSTERVILLE News, by W.T. Atkinson Mr. B.G. Roberts spent the weekend with his father who is seriously ill in Alabama. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.A. McIntosh spent Sunday with their children at Franklin. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Hester and Vernon from Atlanta spent Friday night with Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Roberts. Vernon has just received his discharge from the Navy after two years overseas. __ Mr. J.B. Gilbert spent two weeks with his sick father in north Georgia. He reports his father improved. __ Mr. Verlin Denney from Fort McPherson spent the weekend with his father Mr. L.W. Denney and Webster. Verlin will get his discharge in March. After then he will be here with his father. __ Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Atkinson from Douglasville spent the week end with their father and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Striplin and Linnie. __ Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Todd were Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Bledsoe and children of Carrollton. __ Our sick people seem to be doing fine except Mrs. D.E. Bell, who is in very feeble health. Mrs. Bell is 72 years of age, a very fine christian woman. If you pass this way, visit with her. It will be appreciated by the family. __ CARD OF THANKS The family of the late Ross J. Nutt wishes to thank their many friends for the kindness and sympathy shown in their recent bereavement in the death of their father. We were grateful for the many beautiful flowers. Crockett spent last week with relatives in Carrollton. __ The birthday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Render Hyatt on Sunday honoring Mr. Jim Harcrow's and Ellis Hyatt's birthdays was attended and enjoyed by the following: Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harcrow, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Harcrow and children, Mr. and Mrs. Rudith Harcrow and chldren, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Robinson and Mrs. Jean Williamson. All had a good time and wish for Mr. Harcrow and Ellis many more happy birthdays. ___ LOCAL News Mr. an Mrs. J.E. Lane of Imperial, Calif., were weekend guests of Mrs. H.D. Daniel and family. They were enroute to Portsmouth, VA to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Lane. __ The many friends of Mrs. Ada Haynes will regret to hear of her illness. She now resides in LaGrange at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bill Dunlap. Mrs. Haynes is a former resident of the Ephesus community. __ Mrs. Oscar Smith spent Monday in LaGrange with her mother, Mrs. Ada Haynes who is ill. __ Mrs. R.L. Awbrey has returned to her home from a visit with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Awbrey in Roanoke, Ala. __ Mrs. Paul Ashmore is in Piedmont Sanitorium in Atlanta. __ Mrs. Jessie Denney was called to LaGrange on Monday on account of the illness of her mother, Mrs. Ada Haynes. __ Friends of Al Horowitz will regret to learn that he is confined to the Newnan Hospital.
