GENTRY, PROMINENT CITIZEN, DIES AT HIS HOME John W. Gentry, age 66, one of Heard County's most outstanding citizens, died at his home in the Welcome community near Roopville, Monday afternoon, April 5th following an illness of six weeks. Mr. Gentry was born in Carroll County, Georgia January 23, 1884, the son of W.A. Gentry and Elizabeth Craven Gentry. He had lived where he died most of his life. As a boy he joined the Old Harmony Methodist Church near Roopville but later became a charter member of the Welcome Church, where he served as steward and sunday school teacher. He had been an active Mason, being a member of the Goshen Lodge No. 71, Frolona Royal Arch Lodge No. 69 and Western Council No. 29 R. and S.M. He taught school for a number of years and for 12 years was connected with the Roopville Bank; for 12 years he was a Tax Commissioner of Heard County. For 8 years he was Clerk of the County Commissioners. During World War II he was chairman of the Heard County Draft Board. Mr. Gentry was an unselfish man, devoting his life in service to others. He was a citizen of Franklin for several years and an asset to the town. There are few who labored under more handicaps but he did not hesitate to labor and press forward. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Bernice Brown, to whom he was married October 22, 1933; one daughter, Virginia; one son, Billy, all of Roopville; one brother, D.M. Gentry of Roopville; five sisters, Mrs. E.L. Caldwell and Mrs. J.T. Brannon of Austell, GA.; Mrs. J. E. Farmer of Cullman, Ala., Mrs. J.H . Lester of Double Springs, Ala.; and Mrs. J.R. Swinney of Phil Campbell, Ala. Funeral services were held from the Welcome Methodist Church, Tuesday at 3 p.m., with the pastor Rev. Clark officiating, assisted by Rev. L.A. Gore. Music was rendered by Clarence Vines, Rev. J.E. Wicks adn Mrs. Denver Shirey. Interment was in the church cemetery with Masons having charge of the committal. Martin Funeral Home of Carrollton was in charge. __ WELCOME Community News Mr. W.W. Brown who has been in ill health for several years has been worse the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Jarrett of Birmingham are spending some time with her mother, Mrs. W.F. Merrell and other relatives here. __ Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Crockett of Columbus spent the week end with his mother, Mrs. P.W. Crockett and other relatives. __ Mr. and Mrs. Duman Tuggle and Mrs. H.L. Tuggle spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Potts of Carrollton. __ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Neighbors spent Saturday with her brother, Mr. Percy Denney and family near Striplings Chapel. ___ MT. PLEASANT News The many friends of Pope Kirk will be sorry to know he has been real sick for several days but glad to say he is much improved. __ Jesse Arnett and famiy spent last Sunday with their son and wife at West Point and all went over to Opelika to see where the cyclone had passed through. __ Mrs. Florence and children celebrated her birthday at her daughter's, Mrs. Radney Tony. All her children were there except Mrs. Roscoe Page. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Sara Evans of Greenville spent Sunday with Mrs. Ada V. Cagle. __ Mrs. E.J. Osborne returned to her home in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. on Friday after spending a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Pope. __ ELERY News Mr. an Mrs. Herschel Hembree and daughter Patsy spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan. __ Mrs. Doris Wall spent last week in LaGrange with Mrs. Myrtice Neighbors and daughter Linda. __ EPHESUS News, by Miss Beulah Daniel Mrs. Herman Rogers was honored at a surprise birthday supper Thursday night at her home. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Rogers and Cornell, Mr. and Mrs. Buren Rogers and family, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Rogers and family, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Teal and Darrell. A delicious supper was served and a nice time was had by all. Prof. and Mrs. O.D. Janney called during the evening. ___ Mrs. Johnie Nunis is on the sick list. __ Friends of Mrs. Ada Haynes will be sad to learn of her illness in the LaGrange Hospital. __ Friends of Mrs. Callie Holsonback of LaGrange regret to learn of her being seriously ill. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, April 16, 1948 The Heard County Memorial Hospital will be opened on May 29th. Elaborate plans are being worked out for opending day. The details will be announced as they are developed. Only two things have been agreed upon; the first is the opening date and the second is that we are going to have an old fashioned barbecue. ___ ROOSTERVILLE News Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for the father of Mr. R.G. Roberts near Heflin, Alabama. The heavily banked casket with the many beautiful flowers showed the love and esteem that his neighbors and friends held for this good christian man. The family has our greatest sympathy. __ Our community was again made sad Friday at noon when the pearly gates swung open and a gentle voice said "come" and farewell unspoken, Mrs. Joe Sanders gently entered home. Funeral services were held the following day at Red Oak Church. Services were conducted by Rev. Gore in the presence of a large concourse of her friends. The many beautiful flowers showed the love and esteem that we held for this good christian woman. The family has our deepest and greatest sympathy. __ Clyde Atkinson from Douglasville spent Saturday here with his father and friends. __ CAMPGROUND Community News Mrs. R.E. Davis has been very sick for the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Dunlap announce the birth of a daughter March 28th. __ Mr. Phillip Ashley, who has been in failing health for some time, will go to the LaGrange hospital Wednesday for an operation. We wish for him a quick recovery. ___ WELCOME Community News Our hearts were made very sad Monday April 5th when the news came that Mr. J.W. Gentry was dead. He had been ill almost seven weeks and suffered a great deal. He was a member of Welcome Church, a faithful and loyal one, always ready to do the right thing and help anyone in need. His life was an example to us all, giving us inspiration to do better and to live closer to god. No one can fill his place but let's strive to do the things he would have done and make our church better every sunday and be ready to go home to meet him when the call comes. __ Mr. and Mrs. William Gentry announce the birth of a son April 11th at the Carrollton Clinic. __ We are very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Joe Sanders of near Antioch, which occurred suddenly Friday. Her loved ones have our sympathy. __ Mr. and Mrs. Blenton Tuggle and children and Mrs. H.L. Tuggle and son Eugene spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Tuggle near Cartersville. __ EPHESUS News Mr. Frazier Bailey became a hero last week when he captured a mother fox and four young foxes under an old out-building. A good deed was accomplished. __ Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Barker have moved to their new home, "the Hightower place", near Roopville. We regret to lose these good neighbors. __ Several from here attended the funeral of Mrs. Callie Holsonback Wednesday at Macedonia. The family has our sympathy. We also send our sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Roberts in the death of their father who lived near Heflin, Alabama. __ Mrs. B.N. Bonner, a member of our Ephesus Church, was buried at Veal on Saturday afternoon April 10th. The family has our sympathy. __ Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Wood were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith and baby of Oregon, Mr. and Mrs. Welch Smith and sons, Mrs. Monroe Smith and Annie Ruth all of Roanoke, Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Wood and Miss Ina Daniel. Mr. and Mrs. Wood are both very feeble. __ STATE LINE News Mrs. Ike Golden has returned from the Bonner Hospital and is doing nicely after treatment. __ Whooping cough is still raging in this community. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jack Webb of Anniston, Ala., returned home Saturday after spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Ike Golden. __ Mr. Whitley Barrett of Hogansville spent Sunday with his mother, Grandma Barrett. __ LOCAL News Mr. A.J. Lane who is critically ill at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta is improving. __ Dr. and Mrs. Fred Simonton from Chicamauga spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Simonton. __ Dr. Blue Daniel of Hogansville visited Mrs. Sallie Lane on Sunday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Melson Goodson attended the Harp - Hearn wedding in Bay Minette, Ala. on Sunday. __ ELERY News This community was made sad Friday when the news was spread that Mrs. Joe Sanders had passed away. She was a good woman and will be greatly missed. She leaves her husband Mr. Joe Sanders and one daughter, Mrs. Coy Hornsby and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her going away. The family has our sympathy. __ Mrs. N.L. Folds and Carolyn are on the sick list this week. We wish them a speedy recovery. __ Mrs. C.S.
