CHARLES PARHAM, 83, BURIED MONDAY, MAY 10th Mr. Charlie T. Parham of Centralhatchee, passed away early Sunday morning at the ripe old age of 83 years. He had been in feeble health for several years. He resided with his son Jep H. Parham, a former representative of Heard County and was a life long resident of Heard County. He is survived by six sons; Jep H. Parham, Franklin, GA, Col James R. Parham, East Point, Lonnie C. Parham, Gainesville, Fla., A.J. Parham, LaGrange, GA., Glenn Parham and C.T. Parham, U.S. Army; two daughters, Mrs. Susie Mae Strickland and Miss Virginia Parham of Columbus. Services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Centralhatchee Baptist Church with Rev. Gordon Willingham officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery, Lewis & Lipford in charge. ____ HOME COMING AT YELLOW DIRT There will be home coming at Yellow Dirt on the Fourth Sunday in May. Everybody is invited to come and bring well filled baskets and flowers to decorate the graves. The day set for cleaning the cemetery is May 19th. If it rains that day come the first pretty day. __ WELCOME Community News Sunday School and preaching services were good Sunday afternoon. Services were conducted by a visiting preacher since our pastor, Rev. Roy Clark is visiting his home in Kentucky for Mother's Day. __ Mrs. William Gentry, who has been ill for several weeks, is much improved we are glad to report. __ Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Tuggle and daughters of near Cartersville spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hamp Tuggle and family. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Shirey of Texas recently visited Mr. adn Mrs. Tom Johnson. __ Mrs. Bernice Gentry and children recently visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Brown. Mr. Brown continues ill. __ SOIL CONSERVATION IN HEARD COUNTY, by B.C. Patrick Byron Cook, near Texas community, is grazing ten hogs on two acres of well established kudzu. The West Georgia Soil Conservation District assisted Mr. Cook in the planting of kudzu in 1944. He says "I am feeding my hogs less now than before and they are putting on a lot of weight." "I didn't know kudzu would grow so fast, says Mr. Ernest Cook of Texas after fertilizing and disking it this spring. David Crockett, a veteran farmer at Glenn, has prepared his land for the planting of bicolor lespedeza seed. The plants will supply planting stock for wildlife borders in Heard and adjoining counties. William Meacham of the Waresville community reports that he has from 90 to 100 percent stand of bicolor plants that were planted this spring to furnish food for quail. The writer made a visit to Frank Tingle's farm this morning and noticed that he was cutting his sericea for hay. "It will only be cut once and then a seed crop is harvested later", says Frank. James P. Knight, whose farm is north of Centralhatchee, reports that he has almost a 100 percent stand of kudzu that was planted this spring. ____ EPHESUS News by Miss Beulah Daniel Mr. H.A. Cook, age 70, passed on to his reward Wednesday morning, May 5th. In the passing of Mr. Cook, Ephesus Church lost one of its most helfpul and useful members. He will be greatly missed in the church and throughout our community. He was an outstanding citizen and neighbor. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon by Rev. L.G. Rogers and Rev. W.H. Caldwell at Ephesus. ___ Mrs. Fannie Robinson has been real sick but we are glad to say she is some better. __ Mrs. Jewell Broome, a nurse, of Goodwater, Ala., is with her mother and Mrs. Thelma Payton also, who is doing fine. __ Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Hearn and daughters of Roanoke, and Mrs. Wilma Morrow of Talladega, Ala., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Frost and Mrs. Troy Daniel. __ Mrs. W.L. Rogers was on the sick list last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Daniel have been visiting their father, Mr. Tommie Daniel near Bowdon, who has been seriously ill. __ Mrs. W.M. Culpepper moved back to LaGrange last week. __ WARESVILLE News Mr. John Almon, brother of Luke Almon, was buried at Prospect last Friday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Warren Fuller spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Clark Fuller. __ Mrs. Susie Pike was operated on last week. __ Mr. Amos Barnes was able to attend the birthday dinner given by his sister Mrs. Harlan on Sunday. His brother Adrian from Missouri is visiting him this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. O.T. Eady spent last weekend in Florida visiting relatives. __ Mrs. Susie Thomas continues to be very sick at the home of Mrs. Erwin. __ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sanders are still on the sick list. __ MT. PLEASANT News, by Mrs. Suzie Middlebrooks Mers. Verna Mathews and son Merritt made a pleasure trip through the country in their car to Memphis, Tennessee a few days ago to see her daughter Norvell. __ Mrs. Effie Bennett of Hogansville spent Sunday with Mrs. Willie Lee Nelms who has been sick for the past three weeks; also her sister, Mrs. Barber of East Point visited her Sunday. __ Idus Middlebrooks of LaGrange spent last Tuesday night with home folks and carried us home with him. We spent the day very pleasantly. We saw some of our old Heard county friends who we had not seen in thirty years.
