Heflin, Cleburne Co., Alabama NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, APRIL 16, 1936 JUDGE W.B. MERRILL HAS BIRTHDAY, APR. 5 Walter Benjamin Merrill of Heflin was born April 5, 1873 near Franklin, Georgia. His parents moved to Edwardsville, Ala., the county seat of Cleburne county when he was small. He lived there until the courthouse moved to Heflin in 1905. Mr. Merrill was admitted to the bar in 1892 and has practiced law in the courts of Alabama since, except the seven years when he was Circuit Judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. Mr. Merrill is a Democrat and has taken an active interest in politics since he was a young man. He was chairman of the county executive committee for five years and has kept in touch with their plans since. He has served his district as state Senator for one term. He is a Shriner and has held serveral offices in the Masonic order. Mr. Merrill is a deacon in the Baptist church and for years taught the Men's Bible class. He still takes an active part in civic and religious life of the town and county. At present, Mr. Merrill is senior partner in the law firm of Merrill and Merrill of Heflin. The junior member is his son P.J. Merrill, who is county solicitor of Cleburne county.
