We know that one and all tried vainly to beat back the fatal hand; and for all the beautiful flowers sent to represent his home on high; and for all the good things said and done during our darkest hours. Whitley entertained at a shower Saturday afternoon honoring Mrs. Katherine Hunter a recent bride. Mrs. Carlton Hale and Margaret Williams were co-hostesses. She received many useful gifts. Delicious refreshments of sandwiches and tea were served. __ Mrs. Rubye Davis and son Marin of Gainseville, Texas were visitors here over the weekend. Mrs. Davis while here sold her farm located only a few miles from Glenn. __ Jim Crenshaw is still confined to his bed most of the time. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Etchison, Fairfax, Ala., were weekend visitors of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Paschal. __ Mrs. Sylvester Jones, Gainseville, was the weekend guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Lipford. __ Mrs. A.J. Lane spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Pat H. Winn in Austell. __ Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Burns are the proud parents of a son, O.W. Jr., born Wednesday morning at Newnan hospital. Both mother and child are doing as well as could be expected at last report. __ Mr. W.C. Hill spent Tuesday in Atlanta with his aged father, who has been quite ill. __ Don't miss "Gone with the Wind" to be in Carrollton Theatre Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week with shows each day at 12, 4 and 8 p.m. ___ Dr. Roy Denney, Alma, spent a day this week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Denney, returning via Augusta for Mrs. Denney, who was visiting her parents there. __ Mrs. Ella Kitchens, an invalid for several years, and eldest daughter of the late Joseph Miller, died at her home near the camp ground Thursday last, and was buried at Olive Branch the following day. Her life had been spent where she died, a quiet, unassuming lady who had many friends. She was 72. Rev. J.C. Adams officiated at the funeral with Lewis & Lipford as directors. Survivors are two brothers, Will Miller, state of Texas, Garnet Miller, Franklin, and one sister, Mrs. A.R. Hemmingway, Franklin. ___ Mrs. M.A. Lovingood, Marietta, spent the past week with the family of her son, Mr. E.A. Lovingood. __ LEGAL NOTICE - - Administration Georgia, Heard County To all whom it may concern: F.L. Gearreld having in proper form applied to me for permanent letters of administration on the estate of E.E. Cavender, late of said county, this is to cite all and singular the creditors and next of kin of E.E. Cavender to be and appear at my office within the time allowed by law and show cause, if any they can, why permanent administration should not be granted to Frank K. Gearreld on E.E. Louise Sledge, Ordinary __ NEWSPAPER Issue of February 14, 1941 Three more registrants from Heard County will be inducted into the Army this month. They are: Elmer Lee Haynes and Ambrose Powers Goodson to go to Fort McPherson on the 19th, the third being Harvey Dunson, colored, to go to Fort Benning on Feb 21st. __ Mr. H.J. Mickle some weeks ago purchased the old Wright home place on the south edge of town, and expects to rebuild the property in the summer. __ TEXAS Community News Byron and Mrs. Cook are the proud parents of a son. __ Newt Cook is some better but is still confined to his bed. __ Luke and Mrs. Golden are building a new store in Texas community. We are proud of them and wish them luck. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, February 21, 1941 WARESVILLE Community News Little Ray McColough was carried to the hospital in Roanoke Monday for an operation and is in very serious condition. __ Henry Kitchens, from Sylvester, returned Saturday, after being seriously ill for 4 weeks with typhus fever. __ We trust that Dr.Mickle who is in Roanoke hospital will soon be better. Those who can not go to see him should write him a card. He has been a blessing to Heard County. He is one of our best citizens and deserves sympathy and rememberances from the ones he has helped so much. __ Mrs. Henry Sanders' mother was buried at Lafayette, Alabama last Saturday. __ We are very sorry to learn of the illness of Aunt Emma Cooper of Roanoke. We hope she will soon be better. __ ROCKALO Community News Junior Arrington is improving after an operation in LaGrange hospital. __ Mrs. Mollie Hull spent the past week with her daughters, Mrs. Joe Marlow and Miss Conie Hull both of LaGrange. __ Artis and Mrs. Wright recently spent the day with Deddie and Mrs. Freeman at Frolona. __ TEXAS Community News Mrs. L.L. Cook visited relatives in Roanoke on Sunday and went to see "Gone with the Wind". __ Herbert and Mrs. Harris and Annie Ruth Jones from Atlanta were callers here Sunday. __ CENTRALHATCHEE Community News Mrs. Lois Knight is in the hospital. __ Mrs. Laura Hardy enjoyed last Sunday very much. She had all her children and grandchildren visit her. __ Glenn Prince has moved into our community. __ Mrs. Jim Kent has installed a beauty parlor in her home. __ MT. PLEASANT Community News Glover Mathews and wife of Columbus spent the weekend here. __ Albert and Mrs. Bledsoe of LaGrange spent the weekend with Whitley and Mrs. Lester. __ GLENN Community News We are sorry to hear of Mrs. Tillman Adams being in Georgia Baptist Hospital where she underwent a serious operation on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Adams recently moved here from Rome, GA. __ Bill and Mrs. Starnes announce the birth of a son. __ LEGAL NOTICE - - Leave to Sell Georgia, Heard County, Court of Ordinary Feb. Term 1941 G.A. Adams, administrator of the estate of Mrs. Mary Lester, deceased, having duly applied by petition to sell the lands belonging to said estate, said application will be heard at the regular term of the court of Ordinary for said county to be held on the first Monday in March 1941. Louise Sledge, Ordinary _____ In the Carrollton Baptist Church, which he served several years as a pastor, services were held Sunday for Dr. Gilbert Dobbs, 73, who had held pastorates in seven states when he retired 10 years ago. Mr. Dobbs died Friday in an Atlanta hospital after a brief illness of pneumonia. __ HOME NEWS, GOSSIP Mr. Melvin Barber and Miss Katie Lou Lassister, Newnan, drove over to Franklin Saturday, procured a marriage license and a few minutes later they were pronounced husband and wife by Justice McCutchen at the News and Banner office. __ Dr. C.M. Mickle finally had to undergo the amputation of his only leg a few days ago. He has served many and it is a source of regret to his former patients and friends that he must pass his declining days with both legs gone. __ Messrs. Georce G. Stoney of Montgomery, Ala., and Doyle Jones Jr. of Athens, both with the FSA, were in the city Wednesday looking up data on a historical sketch of Heard County. It is such a pity that little history of Heard County has been kept and all of the court house records have been twice burned in the meantime. __ Mesdames B.F. Cagle, Carl Simonton, H.E. Burdett, A.E. Lee, M.T. Awbrey, T.E. Owensby, C.R. Bird, went to West Point on Wednesday to the Baptist W.M.U. Association. Mrs. Simonton was named as auditor. Next year's meeting will be in Newnan. __ DIED - - Mrs. B.N. Archer, formerly of Heard County, died at her home at Ragland, Ala., last week. She was known and beloved in her girlhood as Miss Jennie Hawk, a sister of Mr. J.R. Hawk, who attended the funeral. __ Dr. J.L. Taylor has been in Roanoke, Ala., this week, where he is having improvements made in residential property he owns there. __ Mrs. J.C. Adams is ill at the home of an aunt in Atlanta, being unable to return with her husband on his way back from Gracewood the past week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Grady Dennis spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. John Cooper in Roanoke, Ala. Mrs. Cooper is slowly recovering from a recent illness. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, February 28, 1941 J.E. WILLIAMSON DIES WHEN CAR OVERTURNS Mr. J.E. Williamson, 38, former superintendant of Centralhatchee High School and serving this year as superintendant of Star High School midway between Sharpsburg and Turin in Coweta County, was killed early Tuesday night near Senoia when his car overturned. Reports of his tragic death was telephoned to Franklin about ten o'clock the same night. Particulars ae not fully available but it is understood that he was out on school business whena tire blew and the car overturned and Mr. Williamson was found dead of a broken neck. Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Anna Williamson of Chentralhatchee; his wife; two daughters, Dorothy and Barbara Williamson; four sisters, Mrs. C.J. Millians of Newnan; Mrs. Tom Gladney and Mrs. J.A. McWhorter of Centralhatchee, and three brothers, J.M. and C.H. Williamson of Centralhatchee, and L.R. Williamson of Tampa, Fla. Rites were held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in Centralhatchee Baptist church with burial in the churchyard. __ MR. S.R. SIMS DIES AT CORINTH Mr. S.R. Sims died suddenly at his home near Corinth late Saturday afternoon. His death was a great shock to his family and friends, as he had been about his business as usual all day but died from a heart attack. Mr. Sims is survived by his wife, the former Miss Jessie Kate Jackson of Corinth and two daughters, Miss Ida Sims and Mrs. J.P. Shaddix of Union City. J.B. Sims of California, Thos. Sims of Texas, and W.C. Sims of Moreland are his brothers, and Miss Sallie Sims of Union City, Mrs. Ben Couch of Moreland, Mrs. T.P. Bullard of Palmetto and Mrs. Bohannon of New York are his sisters. Mr. Sims has long been an active and loyal member of Corinth Methodist church serving as a steward for a number of years. Funeral services were held at his church Sunday afternoon at two-thirty by his pastor, Rev. V.L. Bray. The church was filled to overflow by friends and relatives to pay tribute to this beloved citizen. Burial was in Corinth cemetery. ________ PLEASANT Hill Community News Frank Rogers left MOnday for the CCC Camp. __ Raymond Brown and Raymond Harris left Monday for Army training. __ Noah and Mrs. Daniel are the proud parents of a daughter born Feb. 18th. __ FROLONA Community News Rufus and Mrs. Freeman of near Rockalo ae visiting their daughter Mrs. Lee Farmer. __ Mrs. Mary Lipham has returned home after a visit to relatives in Lanett, Ala. __ Melvin and Mrs. Johnson announce the birth of a son on February 18th. __ W.W. and Mrs. Wilburn are visiting their children in LaGrange. __ Sorry to have Gilbert and Mrs. Gay move out of our community. They are moving to Rome. __ COOLEY's STORE Community News We are sorry to learn of the death of Andrew Pope of West Point. He was buried at Prospect on Wednesday. __ Mrs. E.O. Barber spent several days last week with her daughter, Mrs. L.J. Forbus of Hogansville who has been real sick. __ Bradley Barber spent several days last week in Akron, Ohio on business, Ridley McClain returning home with himi Friday to spend a few days. __ Jacob and Mrs. Whatley of LaGrange spent Sunday with homefolks. __ LOCAL & STATE NEWS Robert L. Johnson, 60, died in Carrollton on Saturday after an extended illness. He had serves as head of the social science department of the Roopville High school since last September. __ Two fireman were injured and a woman barely escaped with her life on Monday as fire destroyed the J.C. Whitley Funeral Home on the edge of the business district in Villa Rica. __ HOME NEWS, SUGGESTIONS, GOSSIP Mrs. B.L. Burns of Carrollton has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Burns the past two weeks. __ Mrs. Winslow Porter of College Park, spent several days this week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.F. Bell, near town. __ Mr. Dent Goodson, McDonough, spent the weekend with his other Mrs. Eva Goodson. __ Superior Court business will be quite light, according to clerk G.A. Adams, who also advises that the Moore case, which has already had to mistrials, will be the first case to be called after selecting jurors on Monday March 17th. __ Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Rogers announce the birth of a son Thursday, Wendell Roy. __ Mr. Lee Stephens, recently returned from the Phillipines and Mrs. Minor Stephens were guests of Mrs. T.H. Lipford on Monday. __ Mrs. L.C. Ridley, J.W. and Claude, spent Sunday with relatives at Heflin, Ala. __ Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Whitaker left Monday for Leesburg, Fla., to visit their daughter, Mrs. Edwin Cauthen and will also visit other relatives in Tampa. During their absence Mrs. Marvin Kelley, Atlanta, is staying with her sister, Miss Anne Whitaker. __ A sumptuous fish supper at Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Lipham's enlarged quarters Monday night had a large attendance.
