Gravitt Rev. G. Garland Gravitt, age 74, of Route three, Bowdon, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 18, [1971] in the Bowdon hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Carroll County on May 1, 1897, the son of the late William P. and Jane Buchanan Gravitt. Rev. Gravitt was a retired Baptist Minister and had lived in the Bowdon area since 1951, moving here from Woodland, Ala. He was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church, a member of Lamar Masonic Lodge, No. 651, F&AM, Carroll Chapter No. 22, Royal Arch Mason and Wester Council Chapter No. 29, Royal and Select Masters. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Gravitt, who died in the service with his country with the U. S. Army on May 17, 1945, in Okinawa. Rev. Gravitt and his wife, Mrs. Harriett Nixon Gravitt, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 5, 1969. Survivors in addition to his wife include four daughters, Mrs. Noel Williams, route three, Bowdon, Mrs. J. T. Whitaker, Bunnell, Fla., Mrs. Julian Spruill, route three, Bowdon and Mrs. Wendell Jackson, route one, Ranburne, Ala.; five sons, Wallace Gravitt, Anniston, Ala., Trummer (sic – s/b Trumer) Gravitt, LaGrange, Goodyn (sic – s/b Goodwyn) Gravitt, Lanett, Ala., Elmo Gravitt and George Gravitt, both of route three, Bowdon; twenty-six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren., and one sister, Mrs. Mae Dangler, Atlanta. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 20, from the Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. J. C. Toney, Rev. J. C. Toney and Rev. Edward McLain officiating. Music was by the Church Choir under the direction of Ross Chambers and the Corinth Trio. Interment was in the Church Cemetery. Lamar Masonic Lodge No. 651, F&AM was in charge of Masonic Graveside Rites. The following grandsons served as pallbearers: Randy Spruill, Larry Williams, Lawrence Williams, Barry Gravitt, Ronald Williams and Steve Gravitt.
