I am a history buff, and have had the pleasure of helping myself and others in finding their ancestors in old cemeteries. In visiting these on the Heron Bay property and reading infomation about them on line, I realized information on location that was submitted some 12 years ago when transcribed, is no longer useful and doubt anyone could find them with the old information. So I just wanted to try to be helpful in case someone in future days may be hunting these cemeteries....Thanks Sadie Rogers This is a large residential area, and homeowners association here maintains the grounds around these cemeteries, but mother nature takes care of the grounds inside the tree areas. So the important clue is that all 3 of these cemeteries (Atkins- Adams Family Cemetery, Barham Family Cemetery & Grice Family Cemetery) are located within the Heron Bay Golf and Country Club Subdivision, which is located on Georgia Hwy 155 (exit 216 off I-75) in the Luella area, between McDonough and Griffin. *** Atkins- Adams Family Cemetery. Location Heron Bay Golf and Country Club. Enter the subdivision on Heron Bay Boulevard. Continue on this street which is very long, follow to where the street almost dead-ends, but bears to right. Turn right on Louis Drive. The cemetery is on the right amongst tall trees, surrounded by a split rail fence. Cemetery sets back a bit from the street and not noticible that the area is a cemetery, until you step inside the rail fence area.. All this area is not built up yet, but still in a residential area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Compiled by: Linda S. Sanders http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00034.html#0008338 Introduction: This cemetery is located in Land Lot 246 of the 3rd District, Henry County, GA. I75-S to exit 212, right to Luella/Nutt Rd. fork. Follow Luella Rd. to Hunter Rd., take a left. At the intersection of Nutt and Hunter Rd., there is a logging road which consists of private property of ~ 368 acres (the original Adams place composed of 1,600 acres), currently owned by a German investor. It is no longer in the family's possession. Raymond & Melanie Chandler, who live on Nutt Road (her father is Neal Evans), took us into the woods to experience this marvel. They currrently lease the land from the investor to hunt on, and knew exactly where to find this cemetery. We traveled through the above-referenced land for at least 1 mile and came abruptly to a path into the woods. Another 1/4 - 1/2 mile through the path, we located the cemetery. It was definitely abandoned. According to Ray Chandler, some of the graves had been dug up and robbed in the past by unknown individuals. On two, the ground had sunk as evidence of this. This would not be an easy cemetery to locate without some assistance. The cemetery was originally known as Oaklawn. History: Joseph Atkins came from the Edgefield district of S.C. along with John Adams in 1826. Both families were of the same Adams family in S.C. before coming to Henry Co., GA and became successful, prosperous planters. They settled in the region from Hampton Locust Grove Rd. (originally known as Burnt Mill Rd.), south to the Spalding County line. John Adams had a large plantation. Records who that Jesse Johnson (great grandfather of Lyndon Baines Johnson), owned land lots on the line of the 3rd & 6th districts near John Adams, among others. In fact, John Adams, purchased the land his home sat on from Jesse Johnson when he moved. Joseph Atkins married Margaret Adams (daughter of David Adams and Phebe Yeldell, sister of John Adams). Children were Eliza J. Atkins (1824-1894, who married Robert M. Walker), Adeline Matilda Atkins (1826-1901, who married Gideon G. Minter), Robert Atkins (11/26/1828), John Atkins (03/19/1830), James Atkins, attorney-at-law (12/13/1833-1870), Dr. Thomas Washington Atkins (11/06/1835-07/04/1863), Elizabeth Margaret Atkins (04/26/1838, who married William Thomas Griffin (son of John William Griffin)), Mary Mahaleth Atkins (1840-1915, never married), Martha Atkins (1842-1909, married Nehemiah G. Andrews who died in the Civil War; then marrying James Lewis Adams), Frances Atkins (1845, never married), Phoebe C. Atkins (1850, married ? Baird) John Adams married Mahaleath Atkins and their children were: Thomas A. Adams (1818, who married Annie B. Moseley, daughter of Rev. William Mosely), James Lewis Adams (who married Martha Atkins), Sarah Adams (07/11/1819, who married Thomas Griffin Barnett), Franklin L. Adams (Co. A, 53 GA Inf., CSA), Jane Adams (who married William Warren Jackson, son of John and Mary Jackson), Robert A. Adams (1828-1886).
