McConnell t.r.mcconnell@att.net Surveyed: April 16, 2003 Introduction: This cemetery is located in Land Lot 253 in the 7th District of Henry County, Georgia. From I75 South, take Exit 217. Go south on Ga. Hwy. 155 for about 1.8 miles. Turn left into Greenwood Industrial Park. Go about .5 miles and turn right on Greenwood Place. Go about .3 miles. The cemetery is on the right on a heavily wooded knoll back about 300 ft. from the road. It is easily accessible and has clearly been protected within the industrial park. According to Vessie Thrasher Rainer, a cemetery surveyor in about 1975, the cemetery lies on the "old Amis-Copeland place". She cites two tombstone inscriptions:"Sacred to the Memory of William Amis, Born Aug. 18, 1811, Died Oct. 16, 1881, aged 70 years, 1 mo. and 28 days. Ann Griddleton, wife of William Amis, Born Aug. 1, ----, Died June 25, 1869." The original William Amis and his wife were moved to the McDonough Cemetery at some point, where they now lie with others in the Amis family. Another grave covered by a 2 ft by 6 ft. concrete slab was located, however, and a funeral marker with Rev. Watkin's information. The date of death and the age were hand written and faintly visible in the concrete. A total of 15 standing field stones, apparently marking heads of graves were found along with a number of foot stones. The cemetery covers about one acre, and the many depressions in the ground indicated that the cemetery probably holds about 100 graves. According to some, this was once a white cemetery. The field stones that remain may mark African-American slave graves since Mr. Amis was a slave owner. The Funeral Director, Lemon & Tomlinson, was a black enterprise, so it seems likely that Rev. Watkins was of African-American origin. The cemetery appeared to be inactive at this time. Alphabetical Index: Surname Given Name Birth Date Death Date Notes Watkins Henry W.
