I am a history buff, and have had the pleasure of helping myself and others in finding their ancestors in old cemeteries. In visiting these on the Heron Bay property and reading infomation about them on line, I realized information on location that was submitted some 12 years ago when transcribed, is no longer useful and doubt anyone could find them with the old information. So I just wanted to try to be helpful in case someone in future days may be hunting these cemeteries....Thanks Sadie Rogers This is a large residential area, and homeowners association here maintains the grounds around these cemeteries, but mother nature takes care of the grounds inside the tree areas. So the important clue is that all 3 of these cemeteries (Atkins- Adams Family Cemetery, Barham Family Cemetery & Grice Family Cemetery) are located within the Heron Bay Golf and Country Club Subdivision, which is located on Georgia Hwy 155 (exit 216 off I-75) in the Luella area, between McDonough and Griffin. ***Barham Family Cemetery-- Location Heron Bay Golf & Country Club. Enter the subidivison on Heron Bay Boulevard. Go about 100 feet and make an immediate left and enter the drive into an office park ( there is no street name), Continue about 1 block- the cemetery is on the right, to the back and between two office buildings. The cemetery is easily seen between these two buildings, out in the open, with the original rock fence around it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Compiled by: Linda S. Sanders http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00034.html#0008338 Introduction: This cemetery is located in Land Lot 174 of the 2nd District, Henry County, Georgia. I75-S to Exit 216, right (GA Hwy. 155). Cemetery is located on the right just after Heron Bay Boulevard, in front of the Heron Bay Golf & Country Club subdivision. T.T. Barham, Jr., married Eliza A. Lemon (who was the daughter of Nancy W. Crockett Lemon and Alexander Lemon). History: Alexander Lemon's parents were Abraham and Elizabeth Lemon from Virginia. His brother was Abel A. and he also had a sister who married a Wright and lived in Griffin (Spalding County), GA. Alexander Lemon's first marriage was to Sarah Benning, who died in 1847. His second marrriage was to Nancy W. Crockett (daughter of John Crockett and his first wife Dorcus E. Culp, with their only child Nancy born of this union in 1824). Alexander and Nancy had only one child, Eliza, born in 1850. Eliza (wife of T.T.) died in 1850, and their two small sons, Thomas Alexander (1872-1946, who married Sweetie Stroud) and William C. Barham (1874-1957, who married Ada Grant) were raised by their grandmother Nancy W. Lemon. One of the stones was broken in several places, and one had been replaced with a new marble one. Mrs. Busbin is working on replacing all of the stones with readable ones. This cemetery is encompassed by a 3' flagstone wall, approximately 20' x 20'. It is located on a privately owned non-producing farm. Alphabetical Index Name Birth Date Death Date Barham, Adeline M. It is approximately 200 yards off the road in a pasture on private property belonging to Mr. James Nutt. Timothy Tharpe Barham, who was born 10 Nov 1808 in Columbia County, Georgia, established this family cemetery. He came to Henry County, GA in 1830. Various records indicate that he took part in many land transactions, 'eventually settling in Henry County between GA Hwy 155 and Towaliga River, south of Luella, Georgia. He and his family lived in a two-story house with a rock wall enclosed family cemetery nearby. The original rock wall believed to have been built by their slaves, still exists. There are five identifiable graves within the wall: 1. Timothy Tharpe Barham (SR) b: 10 Nov 1808, Columbia Co., GA d: 12 Jun 1883, Henry Co., GA. This grave is marked. The original marker is approximately 8' tall. This grave also has a Confederate marker. He was a Confederate Soldier in the 641st Militia District, Henry County, GA. 2. Adeline M. Barden Barham (wife of Timothy Tharpe Barham (SR)) b: ca 1810, Columbia Co., GA d: 20 Sep 1888, Henry Co., GA This grave is marked. 3. Timothy Tharpe Barham (JR) (son of Timothy Tharpe Barham SR and Adeline Barden Barham) b: 10 Mar 1843, Henry Co, GA d: 7 Jun 1914, Henry Co, GA This grave was marked only with fieldstones until a Confederate marker was placed. He was with Company H, 3d Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army Northern Virginia, C.S.A. 4. Benjamin Franklin Barham (son of Timothy Tharpe Barham SR and Adeline Barden Barham) b: 25 Jan 1846, Henry Co, GA d: 18 Apr 1891, Henry Co., GA This grave is marked. 5. Clarissa Elizabeth (Betty) Brown Barham (1st Wife of William Henry Harrison (Hal) Barham, who was a brother to Timothy Tharpe Barham SR) b: ca 1849, Campbell Co., TN d: Dec 1879, Henry Co., GA Additional Information: - The cemetery is approximately 50'x50', and is enclosed by a rock wall about waist high. There is no opening. You have to crawl over the wall to get inside. - Family legends handed down indicate the wall was most probably built by slaves in the late 1800's, and that the family placed the cemetery within the fruit orchard to keep the slaves from stealing the fruit. - Helen BARHAM Busbin and husband, Donald; and brother, Richard Barham, placed Confederate markers on two graves as follows: Timothy Tharpe Barham (JR) on 18 Jan 1999; and Timothy Tharpe Barham (SR) on 5 Jul 1999. - The following work was completed by Clarke Memorial Co. on March 24, 2000: Two markers had fallen as a result of the ground settling many years ago. Four sections of Timothy Tharpe Barham SR's marker had broken apart; however, only one section was actually broken in two. Two sections of Benjamin Franklin Barham's marker had also fallen apart, but had not broken. These were repaired and erected. Additionally, new markers were placed on the graves of Adeline M. Barden Barham and Clarissa Elizabeth (Betty) Barham. These graves were never marked. Several BARHAM descendants contributed toward this project.
