As such, This compiler is using information obtained and allowed for uploading from the Clayton/Henry Genealogical Society provided by: Robert & Linda Ellis 4033 Casey Glen Court Duluth, GA 30096 "John A. Ellis was born in Oglethorpe County, GA about 1798 between the towns of Maxey & Stephens near the river, on Ellis Creek. At the time of his birth this was a thriving little community. His parents were William Ellis, Jr. & Martha (Patsy) Echols. He was apparently the oldest of their eight known children. Very little is known of his younger years. He first started making his footprints in time in the 1820’s. We find him first involved in the Indian depredation files. In 1821, we find him on the Land Lottery drawing land in Henry County, GA. One interesting note is that his father, William Ellis, Jr. Had been involved in some of the earliest survey work in the new county of Henry. The land records show John active most of his life. At one point John owned at least 1,200 acres of land. John married Phebe W. Cheatham in 1824 in Jasper Co., GA. Phebe was about 15 at the time. She was the daughter of Mathew Cheatham and Elizabeth Greene Elam of Chesterfield Co., VA. Phebe’s father died when she was very young, and her mother remarried to Josiah Flourney in Chesterfield Co., GA. Near the time that John A. Ellis and Phebe married, in Jasper Co., GA, Josiah Flournoy died, also in Jasper Co., GA. After their marriage, John & Phebe lived northeast of Locust Grove the remainder of their lives. John and Phebe had fourteen known children (five of these were recently discovered at their family cemetery). Several of his descendants still live in Henry County and surrounding areas while others are spread across the country."
