A. PHILLIPS, of Locust Grove, is another one of Henry County’s prosperous and deserving colored citizens. Only a few years ago he was a track hand on the East Tennessee Road, but by economy and diligence he saved his money, invested it, and now owns the home he lives in, clear of debt, and several town lots in Locust Grove besides. PHILLIPS is a regular subscriber to THE WEEKLY and always pays his subscription promptly. In fact, he never allows any of his debts to go unpaid, his success being attributable perhaps more to this one thing than any other. It was his custom while working on the railroad, to walk all the way to McDonough, for no other purpose than to pay his subscription to THE WEEKLY when due. He remarked while in our office Wednesday, “I will walk to pay my debts, if I can’t do it no other way” and we believe he will, a fact of which perhaps few men, white or colored, can boast. His success shows plainly what colored people can do, for what he has accomplished others can do just as well. When PHILLIPS gets where he can’t pay his subscription, if the present proprietor of THE WEEKLY has charge of it, he shall be put upon our pension list.
