A veteran member of the Georgia Public Service Commission, Mr. Durden is warmheartedly remembered for his hard work and dedication to the people of Georgia, who he fondly referred to as his "six million bosses." His work as a member of the Public Service Commission led to the creation of the largest toll-free calling area in the nation, and at the time of his death, Mr. Durden was working to help stop natural gas price gouging in Georgia. Bob served as chairman of the commission in 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2000. The citizens of Georgia will miss his positive energy and innovative work strategies. The longest-serving member of the commission and a native Georgian, he was a 1965 graduate of Statesboro High School and earned a bachelor of arts (history), master of arts (political science) and J.D. (law) degrees from Emory University. Prior to his election, he was a trial attorney in private practice. Bob was selected for membership in Mensa and has been named to "Who's Who in the South and Southwest," "Who's Who in American Law," Georgia Trend's "100 Most Influential Georgians," and "Who's Who in America." His plan to expand toll-free calling in Atlanta and 300 other Georgia communities and his successful fight to return $1.34 billion dollars to Georgia ratepayers are hallmarks of his service. Georgia Gov. Roy E. Barnes most recently honored him for his commendable service to the citizens of the state of Georgia. Mr. Durden was known for his bipartisanism and devotion to maintaining fairness and justice in the political sector. He was also a former member of Statesboro First Baptist Church. Before his illness progressed, Mr. Durden was an avid traveler. He particularly enjoyed visiting Paris and London, and loved sharing stories of his travels with friends and family. He was a chemical engineer, A U.S. ARMY OFFICER IN WORLD WAR II, a general practice physician, rancher and church official. He was born Oct. 6, 1916, to Carl and Ruth Lundy Hicks of Twelve Corners, Berrien County, Michigan. They, and his only sibling, Mildred Miller, are deceased. His education began in a one-room schoolhouse where, as he reached upper grades, he helped the teacher with beginning students. On his way to and from school, he ran trap lines. After being graduated from Benton Harbor High School, he hitch hiked across southern Michigan to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan, his last two years taking his sister with him. He left the University the first time with a degree in chemical engineering, then working for Chicago Pump Company installing equipment in sewage plants across the United States. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, George returned to Benton Harbor to report in and was accepted for duty in the medical corps as commanding officer of the 60th Malaria Control Unit. He served for four years, two years in the Southwest Pacific, on New Guinea, Morotai and the southern Philippines. He received permission from Gen. McAuthur to arm his men while on New Guinea. When peace came his dream of becoming a physician became a reality, for he was accepted by the University of Michigan for the class of 1950. Receiving his sheepskin, he headed for Mississippi to train for public health work, but with four children, he then hung out his shingle and went to work in the shipyard town of Pascagoula. In his years there, he delivered over 3,000 babies, climbed a shipyard gantry to pronounce a man dead, and on a stormy night went out into the Gulf of Mexico with the Coast Guard to aid a fisherman whose arm was caught in a wench. In 1973 Dr. Hicks practiced office medicine in Grand Bay, Alabama and personally saw to his herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle. During those years he and his wife attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, studying theology. With children on their own, Dr. Hicks and his wife moved to St. Croix, USVI for seven years.
