Lynnda CHAPPELL, 45, passed away Friday evening, May 24, 2002, at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale, after an extended illness. Lynnda was born in Fulton County to Robert and Doris Ware in 1946. John Hardin ESKEW passed away quietly in the early morning of Monday, June 3, 2002. John Hardin Eskew was born in Toccoa, Ga. April 10, 1913, and came with his family to Henry County while he was in his senior year at Eastanollee High School. He graduated from McDonough High School that same year. In 1936, he married Dorothy Cortez McGarity, and they went into the dairy business. They retailed milk in McDonough for nine years. Children on the milk route were given chocolate milk daily. The Eskews' garden and fish pond were shared with the community, and passersby with car trouble always had a helping hand from John, who was able to fix most anything. Machinery and tools were shared, and the ladies in McDonough were given soil for their flower gardens. Even the telephone was a regular stop for Dr. Ellis and Dr. Brandon whenever they needed it. JOHN AND "TEZ," AS HIS WIFE WAS AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN, RECEIVED A VICTORY THROUGH EFFICIENCY AWARD FROM THE GEORGIA AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE. THIS WAS DONE ON PEARL HARBOR DAY, THE SEVENTH DAY OF DECEMBER 1942, TO HONOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY DURING WORLD WAR II. John helped to organize and was also president of the Henry County Dairy Association for a time. In 1949, he became a member of Atlanta Dairies Cooperative, where he served as a director. He helped local dairymen become members and he made trips to Ohio to buy purebred Holstein and Jersey cows so herds would be improved in Henry County. Besides his dairy work, he worked with Farmers Home Administration. He was the Assistant Explorer Scout leader for many years and became a member of the Order of the Arrow. He had a great influence on the youth. After 30 years of dairying, John worked as an insurance agent for Georgia Farm Bureau. He served as first vice president of Henry County Farm Bureau as well. He also worked for Henry County as tax assessor and chief appraiser for about 11 years before retiring at age 65. John became a deacon at First Baptist Church of McDonough and enjoyed years of fellowship in his Sunday school class. A man quiet by nature, John placed high value on honesty, integrity, and meeting his commitments. John was the last survivor of the 10 children of the late Joseph Foster Eskew and the late Minerva Jane Matthews Eskew. He was married for nearly 65 years before he lost his beloved wife "Tez" on Nov. 22, 2001. He was a devoted husband and father of two children, John Daniel Eskew of West Chester, Ohio, and Dorothy Eskew Cordobes of Riverdale, Ga. Grandchildren include Laurel Eskew Garrison, Laney Eskew Reusch, Briana Dennis, and Jim Eskew. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at First Baptist Church of McDonough on Macon Street with Dr. James B. Bradshaw and the Rev. Byron Smith officiating. Edward (Eddie) Dyal SELLERS of Riverdale died Tuesday, June 18, 2002. He was a longtime employee of Kauffman Tire. His daughter, Cheryl Jackson, preceded Mr. Sellers in death. June 21, 2002 Betty Mae Conrad DOYLE, 95, of McDonough and formerly of Atlanta died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Starcrest Nursing Home. She was born May 14, 1907, in Island City, Ky., daughter of the late Mary McQueen and Ance Conrad. Mae's mother died when she was very young. Mae and her sister, Eva, lived with an aunt in Ohio and California until they were 16 and 17. She worked during World War II making parachutes for the Air Force, later becoming a seamstress and managing a boarding house. After her sister's death Mae returned to Ohio and later, Kentucky. In 1982, she moved to Georgia and in January 1983, moved into the Baptist Towers, where she lived until May 2001, when she moved to Starcrest, remaining until her death. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with the Rev. James Elbert Moore officiating.
