He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stockbridge, where he served as Deacon for more than 40 years, and was retired from General Motors. NAIL JR., age 49, of Griffin, formerly of McDonough, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Nail has born Oct. 28, 1952, in Spalding County to the late Wyman Nail Sr. and the late Ellen Brannon Nail. He was a member of the McDonough First United Methodist Church and worked at Caterpillar as a test engineer. He had also been a member of the National Guard in Jackson. Mrs. Whitfield's husband of 60 years, Forrest Foster Whitfield, preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Whitfield worked for Southern Bell in her early twenties. She is a charter member of Tanner's Baptist Church in Ellenwood. After marriage she was a devoted wife and loving mother. Ma, as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren call her, was a loving and understanding grandmother. She has entertained her children and grandchildren with stories of years past. Her survivors will never forget these memories of her. Mrs. Lula Toney SMITH, 80, of Lovejoy, died July 20, 2002. Mrs. Smith was born in Dothan, W.Va., Nov. 24, 1921, the daughter of the late Martha Frances Gravely and James Issac Toney. Mrs. Smith was a member of Lovejoy Baptist Church, owned Lovejoy Food Center and was the meat cutter. She served on the Lovejoy City Council for 18 years. Everyone knew her as "Granny" who worked hard in her job and community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Smith Sr. and granddaughter, Sandra Smith. Born in Clayton County; he was the son of the late James E. Waller and Sue Waller. A child of the Depression, Mr. Waller, at an early age, helped support his family, which included eight brothers and sisters. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, and helped build some of the National Forest System in Oregon. HE JOINED THE U.S. NAVY DURING WORLD WAR II AND SERVED WITH HONOR ABOARD THE USS ALABAMA IN THE PACIFIC THEATER. After the war he married the late Mary Elizabeth Waller, a marriage that would last for over 49 years, until the death of his beloved wife. Mr. and Mrs. Waller served as foster parents to over 30 children during the 1970s and '80s. He also began a long and distinguished career as a master diesel mechanic, a profession from which he retired after more than 30 years of service. A devout Christian and biblical scholar, Mr. Waller was a member of the Lake Cindy Baptist Church in Hampton. A self-described graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, Mr. Waller was always the strong shoulder others could lean on. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. (U.S. Navy, retired) passed away at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Fla., on July 16 at the age of 84. Born Jan. 16, 1918, in Macon, Ga., he attended Lanier High School and Mercer University in Macon, the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1940), and received a master's degree in engineering physics from Cornell University after World War II. CAPTAIN HALL WAS A YOUNG OFFICER SERVING ON THE BATTLESHIP USS CALIFORNIA AT PEARL HARBOR AND SERVED AT SEA ON THE CRUISER USS COLUMBIA IN THE PACIFIC DURING THE MAJOR PART OF WORLD WAR II. DURING HIS NAVAL CAREER HE COMMANDED THREE DIFFERENT DESTROYERS, LATER A DIVISION OF DESTROYERS AND FINALLY A FLEET OILER. HE WAS ALSO INSTRUMENTAL IN THE DESIGN AND PLANNING OF THE OCEAN RECOVERY PROGRAM FOR THE MERCURY SPACE PROGRAM. After retiring from the Navy, he became chief engineer for Southern States Inc. in Hampton, leaving there to serve as Southeastern Regional Director for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and after that as a consulting Professional Engineer. He made his home in Hampton, Ga., until in recent years moving to Fleet Landing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorthe Mount Hall. He is survived by three children, Michael, Cary Jr. and Stephanie; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service with military honors will be held at the columbarium at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., at 10 a.m. Aug. 26.
