September 2, 2002 Mr. John Everett STOCKTON JR., age 74, of Hampton, died Aug. 30, 2002, at Henry Medical Center. Mr. Stockton was born Jan. 21, 1928 in Moulton, Ala., the son of the late Mildred Simpson and John Everett Stockton Sr. He retired from Fort Gillem in 1985 and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Genice Birdyshaw Stockton in 1973. Survivors include his wife, Julia Cooper Stockton of Hampton; children, Diane Lawyer of Hartselle, Ala., Steven Lee Stockton of Buffalo, N.Y., Gail Ryan of Ellenwood, Curtis Stockton of Jackson; stepdaughter, Margaret Clark of Jonesboro; brother, Ray Stockton, and sister, Louise Whitlow, both of Moulton, Ala.; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. After graduating from New Mexico Military Institute, he received his bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Mississippi while a Naval ROTC enrollee. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi International Professional Business Administrators Fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi National Accounting Fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. AS A LIEUTENANT JG HE SERVED ABOARD THE USS MISSISSIPPI BATTLESHIP AS AN ASSISTANT NAVIGATOR. DURING THE KOREAN WAR HE TRAINED A GROUP OF SOUTH KOREANS ON THE ENGINE ROOM OPERATIONS OF THE DESTROYER ESCORT THE UNITED STATES WAS GIVING TO SOUTH KOREA. FOLLOWING HIS ACTIVE DUTY, HE REMAINED IN THE NAVAL RESERVE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. His careers have included the building of custom homes in St. Petersburg, Fla., mortgage banking in the Atlanta area, and the handling of the financial affairs of the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Architecture. He was also president of Lewis Rentals Co. In Atlanta he served as the St. Augustine's Episcopal Church's Vestry as Senior Warden, and was on the board of directors of the Episcopal Towers, an assisted living facility for the elderly. He was an active communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Corinth, Miss., and an active participant in Pickwick United Methodist Church. September 10, 2002 Mrs. Elsie Lunsford Mayo BURKETT, 64, of McDonough died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Northside Hospital. Elsie was born in Butts County Dec. 15, 1937. She was the daughter of the late R.C. "Pete" and the late Callie Blissit Lunsford. She graduated from Jackson High School as an honor graduate and salutatorian in 1955. Elsie was retired from Ford Motor Co. after 40 years of service. She married the late Troy Mayo on July 2, 1955, who died April 19, 1987. Elsie married the widowed John Burkett June 3, 1989. Elsie was a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church since 1964. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August 2000, and fought very hard to live. Elsie's favorite expression was that cancer may take her life but never her faith. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with the Rev. Known by his family and friends as "Moody," HE PROUDLY SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE MARINE CORPS FOR 11 YEARS, AND IS A VETERAN OF BOTH WORLD WAR II AND THE KOREAN WAR. He is a retiree of both the L&N Railroad and Owens-Illinois Glass. His proudest accomplishment, however, was caring for all four of his grandchildren until they were of school age, and then "Boompa" was on call for the children just in case they became ill while at school or perhaps lunch money or homework had been left behind. The kids were also on call for when Boompa got bored at home. (He really understood the need for a "personal day," even if the kids were healthy as could be and in the first grade.) Mr. Moody, a communicant of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, served as an usher and worked in the food pantry. His hobbies were amateur radio and watching "Emeril Live."
