William Norman (Bill) JENKINS, a man who contributed most of his adult life to the United Food and Commercial Workers' Union, the American Labor movement and Clayton County, died on Feb. 1, 2003. JENKINS SERVED IN THE ARMY DURING WORLD WAR II AND RECEIVED A PURPLE HEART. He joined the Union in 1941 and became executive officer of UFCW Local 1063 in 1949 and during his 33 years grew the Local Union from 300 members to more than 11,000 in a "right to work" state. In 1972 he was elected international vice president of the UFCW. He also served as president of the Georgia State Food and Beverage Trade Council, president of the Atlanta Labor Council and vice president of the Georgia State AFL-CIO, being named "Labor Man of the Year" for Georgia in 1976. In addition to his union activities, he also made time to serve as the commander of AmVet Post 17; was a 50-plus-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 180; Board of Directors-United Appeal; Forest Park city councilman and mayor pro tem; Clayton County Personnel Board-chairman for more than 30 years; and the Advisory Board of Clayton Junior College. His travels with the Union took him to Australia, Europe, New Zealand, the Philippines, South America, Canada and all over the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Over the years, Jenkins earned the close friendship of local, national and international politicians and the deep gratitude of countless members, county employees and Union associates who came to recognize his abiding commitment to a strong code of personal ethics, his loyalty to friends, his experienced judgment, his willingness to take calculated risks and his ability to see tasks through. His contributions have not gone ignored, even in his retirement years. In 2001 he received the first annual Organized Labor Lifetime Achievement Award. This acknowledged that he devoted a great portion of his life to the working men and women of Georgia, and his ability to go beyond the confines of his union to work for the welfare of all workers and unions. For example, he established the Georgia State AFL-CIO Officers and Employees Pension Plan, and he was chairman of the UFCW and Employers Welfare and Pension Plans, which served thousands of Union members. Jenkins was most proud of his family - wife Elizabeth Almand Jenkins, who died on June 13, 1989; his children, Larry Norman Jenkins and Sheila Jenkins Lister; and his grandchildren, Stacey Lister Merritt, Jennifer Lynn Jenkins, Jonathan Norman Jenkins and Stefanie LoraAnn Lister; and his great-grandchild, Cameron Reed Merritt.
