Mr. Thompson was a native of Fort Worth, Texas. He was a graduate of Mississippi College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served the Lord as a Baptist minister for more than 50 years. For the past 14 years he has been Pastor of Mt. Springs Baptist Church. Other pastorates include Ash Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., Forest Hills Baptist, Florence, and Cane Creek Presbyterian. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, June 5 at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel, Tuscumbia, with Brother Jim Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery in Leighton. June 3, 2004 CROSSON, WILLIAM N. (BILL) Mr. Bill (William N.) Crosson, age 67, of Stockbridge, died Thursday, June 3, 2004. He was formerly a Real Estate Agent. June 5, 2004 JOHNSON, JOSEPH WALTER Joseph Walter Johnson, age 76, a resident of Jonesboro, Ga., died Saturday, June 5, 2004. He was born in Jonesboro to Robert Lee Johnson and Manche Stanton, was an Army veteran, and was a carpenter by trade. Johnson Jr. of Hermitage, Tenn. and several nieces and nephews. EDENS, SHIRLEY SAVELL Shirley Savell Edens, age 48, of McDonough, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Henry Medical Center. WHATLEY, JOHN (WALLEY) John (Walley) Whatley, 52, of Kelleytown died June 5, 2004. He was preceded in death by his father, John R. Whatley Sr. He is survived by his wife Kathy Whatley; three children, Melissa Trickey of Stone Mountain, Jason Whatley of Locust Grove and Kristen Whatley of Covington; his mother Geraldine Whatley of Kelleytown; and two sisters, Sandra Brown of Kelleytown and Myra Slauson of Woodstock. Also surviving are three grandchildren, three nieces and two nephews. Whatley was a road captain for the Grace Riders chapter of Christian Motorcyclists Association and a Delta employee. FLOYD, JOSEPH RAYMOND Joseph Raymond Floyd, 84, of Hampton, died June 5, 2004. He was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Griffin, son of the late John W. and Jessie Betsill Floyd. He was retired from Southern States after 42 years and a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church for 59 years where he served as a deacon. He loved the outdoors and was a master gardener and loved sharing the fruits of labor. SECKINGER, JOHN A. Mr. John A. Seckinger Sr., 59, of Pooler, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2004. Mr. Seckinger had lived in Pooler all his life. He was employed with Norfolk Southern Railroad for 33 years and retired from the Air Guard after 22 years of service. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Barbara McCorkel Seckinger of Pooler; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John A. June 10, 2004 STUBBS, KENNETH BRENT Mr. Kenneth Brent Stubbs, 33, of McDonough, died Thursday, June 10, 2004. Brent graduated from North Clayton High School in 1988, and was employed by Delta Air Lines. He was preceded in death by grandparents Correne and L.L. Stubbs, and Virgil Helms. DODGEN, HAROLD EUGENE Mr. Harold Eugene Dodgen, 84, of Hampton died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Sacred Journey Hospice. Mr. Dodgen was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Cobb County, son of the late Edna Lillian Kent and Ollie Grady Dodgen. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, graduated from Hampton High School in 1936, served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific for eight years, and retired as a Steel Pattern Maker. He was past president of Hampton Lions Club and Hampton Youth Club, Hampton VFW Lodge, retired and moved to Crystal River, Fla., where he enjoyed fishing every day for 18 years before moving back to Hampton. Mr. Dodgen was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lillian Wallace Dodgen; brother, Fay Dodgen, and son, Russell Dodgen. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13 at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating. He will lie in state one hour prior to the service and interment will follow in the church cemetery. June 11, 2004 DUNCAN, CLIFFORD B. SR. Clifford B. Duncan Sr., 83, a resident of Jackson, Ga., formerly of Locust Grove, died Friday, June 11, 2004. He was born in Gainesville, Ga., to Deward and Nellie Duncan, was a member of New Covenent Church of God and served in the Navy during World War II. June 12, 2004 BEVINS, MARVIN DONALD (DON) Marvin Donald (Don) Bevins, born Aug. 19, 1933, died June 12, 2004 at Southern Regional Medical Center. A loving husband, father and Korean War veteran, Bevins served with distinction in the U.S. Air Force. He had worked in corporate and fleet security for the Omni International and Marriott hotels and Goldkist Inc. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections in Jackson and was a member of Phillippi Baptist Church in Locust Grove. Bevins is survived by his four children, Dona Powell of Hampton, Marc Bevins of Stone Mountain, Margaret Gailey of Lilburn and the Rev. Ronald Bevins of Toccoa; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Gloria Bevins of McDonough. June 13, 2004 STRIGHT, STEPHEN ALEXANDER "SMOKEY" JR. Stephen Alexander "Smokey" Stright Jr., CWO/4 USN/Retired, 95, died at Sacred Journey Hospice, McDonough, Ga., Sunday, June 13, 2004. Mr. Stright was preceded in death by his wife, Mary O'Bryan (Huggins) Stright; parents, Stephen Alexander and Leanna (McCandless) Stright; sister, Leanna Endriss; brother, Jennings F. "Jay" Stright, and a niece, Kay Stanford. Born in Swissvale, Pa., he volunteered for service with the U.S. Navy in World War II, joining the Underwater Demolition Teams, a forerunner of today's Navy SEALS. Mr. Stright was a member of Underwater Demolition Team 15, and saw service in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Silver Star "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" during the invasion of Iwo Jima. His overseas duty assignments included Futema, Okinawa; Guantanimo Bay, Cuba; Port Lyautey, French Morocco; Grondal, Greenland and Midway Island. Mrs. Jenkins was born April 28, 1912, in Cedartown, Ga., daughter of the late Jaruthie Heidi Chappell and Clifford Edgar Harwell. Her husband, James Arthur Jenkins, preceded Mrs. Jenkins in death Feb. 8, 1999. She was an eighth grade student of New Testament Christian Academy, a member of New Testament Community Church and Friendship Baptist Church. Katie was referred to as Katie Bug or Katie Pooh Bear, she was proud of her new lungs, enjoyed school, church, reading, music, being the center of attention, enjoying life and spending time with her brothers and sisters, especially her brother Taylor. Mr. Cox was born July 22, 1934, in Fulton County, son of the late Fannie Mae Filson and Hubert Cox Sr. He was a member of Timberridge Presbyterian Church, served his country in the U.S. Army, and owned and operated Lakewood Auto Parts for 41 years. He enjoyed his family, golf, the lake and the beach. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John William Cox. June 18, 2004 KINSEY, RYAN BLAKE Ryan Blake Kinsey, 21, of Stockbridge, died June 18, 2004. Kinsey was born April 6, 1983, in East Point, son of Randy and Kim Kinsey. He was a 2001 graduate of Stockbridge High School where he played baseball. He also attended Clayton State College. Ryan was always upbeat and positive, filled with life. He enjoyed the outdoors and making people laugh. His parents, Randy and Kim; brother Josh Kinsey; grandmothers Hazel Kinsey of Hapeville and Virginia Kirkland of Fayetteville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins survive him. June 20, 2004 WALKER, JEAN BRANNAN Jean Brannan Walker of Fernandina Beach, Fla. died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her home on Highland Drive. Jean was born in McDonough, Henry County, Ga., daughter of the late Earl and Elon Mae Glass Brannan. Jean was a graduate of McDonough High School and attended Georgia State University. She was employed by Chevrolet Motor Division's Atlanta Lakewood Assembly Plant Payroll Accounting Department. When her second child was born she retired to her second career as a mother and housewife. Jean was a life-long Methodist, and had been a member of Stockbridge Methodist Church, Stockbridge, Ga., First Methodist Church of Folkston, Ga., and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Fernandina Beach, Fla. She was active in Methodist Church circles until failing health did not permit attendance. She was a past member of Beta Sigma Phi Business Sorority, the Eastern Star in Stockbridge, Ga., and was a current member of the Chevrolet's Lakewood Retirement Club, and her Bridge Club, whose members were devoted throughout her illness. Dr. Bruce Jones of Memorial United Methodist Church will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23 in the Burgess Chapel, Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Bosque Bello Cemetery. June 23, 2004 WALSH, TERRENCE EUGENE Terrence Eugene Walsh, 59, died of a heart attack Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at his workplace in Jonesboro. Born Sept. 27, 1944, in Savannah, Mr. Walsh was fourth of six brothers. He was a loving father to his son, Kerry Michael Walsh, 19, also of Jonesboro. Mr. Walsh attended St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Jonesboro, where he served the community tirelessly. He worked as a Eucharistic minister, usher, fundraiser, and sometime choir singer. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Tara Council 6352, and was recently elected Warden for the Council. He was active in the Savannah Council 631 before moving to Atlanta. Mr. Walsh attended Sacred Heart Parochial School and graduated from Savannah High in 1965. Although he lived in the Atlanta area for the past three decades, Mr. Walsh still had Savannah's sand between his toes. Mr. Walsh visited his hometown frequently. Donning his best green blazer, he marched rain or shine in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. In 1993, Mr. Walsh was proud to serve as Eucharist minister at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day. Mr. Walsh was active in community theater. He was a member of "The Knight's Players," as well as having appeared at the Clayton State Theater. His theatrical performances included "The Front Page," "Halloween Shows," "Our American Cousins," The Night of January 16th," and "If It's Monday, It's Mayretta." He especially enjoyed his role as a nun in "Sister Act." He loved all sports, particularly college football, traveling several times to South Bend, Ind. to attend Notre Dame games. He could rattle off the names of Georgia Tech stars from the early 1960s, and he knew the career details of any Savannah High School star from that period. He was preceded in death by brothers Stephen Michael Walsh and John Joseph Walsh. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29. LOVE, ADA Ada Love, 85, of Stockbridge, Ga. died Wednesday, June 23, 2004. She was born in Stockbridge to the late Lovie Jane and John David Phillips. She loved being a homemaker, which included taking care of the house and caring for her children and grandchildren, pets, Sammy the dog and Penny the cat. June 26, 2004 EHLERS, IRENE (RENIE) MALOY Irene (Renie) Maloy Ehlers, 72, of Loganville died Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Embracing Hospicecare in Snellville. Born Dec. 29, 1931, in Newton County, Ga. to the late Rosser Joseph and Kate Bell Ogletree Maloy, she had lived in Loganville for three years. A former resident of Covington, Mrs. Ehlers was a member of Zion Baptist Church, and had worked for The Mead Corp. until 1983. She enjoyed reading, shopping, cooking, and visiting friends and family. CRUMBLING, JACK R. Jack R. Crumling, 62, of Stockbridge, died June 26, 2004. Crumling was an Army veteran. His foreign tour of duty included the Korea Conflict, Europe, Desert Storm, Kuwait and southwest Asia. Crumling received several awards during his foreign tour of duty: the Bronze Star, two Army commendations, four Army achievement medals, two Army good conduct medals, nine National Defense service medals, two southwest Asia service medals. BLEDSOE, SARA MARTIN Mrs. Sara Martin Bledsoe, 89, of Porterdale, Ga. died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Portsbridge Hospice in Conyers. She was born Feb. 7, 1915, in Henry County, Ga. to the late Festus and Willie Wynn Martin, and was the widow of the late William Travis (Chip) Bledsoe. Mrs. Bledsoe was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Bledsoe Gardiner. She had been a resident of Porterdale for the past 63 years and retired from the Bibb Manufacturing Company with 40 years of service. Mrs. Bledsoe was a very loyal member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in McDonough. She enjoyed fishing and sewing. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. today, Friday, July 2 in the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan with the Rev. TAYLOR, LANORA Lanora Taylor, 83, a resident of McDonough, Ga. died Wednesday, June 30, 2004. She was born in Griffin, Ga. to Dixie and Lilla Garner. She and her husband were married for 62 wonderful years. She loved to travel but most of all loved her family and friends. Funeral Services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at Community Bible Church. Interment will follow at College Park Cemetery.
