All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm July 1, 2005 WELCH, COLA MAXINE POPE Mrs. Cola Maxine Pope Welch, age 88, of McDonough, passed away Friday, July 1, 2005 at the Henry Medical Center. She was born Jan. 23, 1917 in Butts County to the late Senie Agnes Tolbert Pope and the late A.H. (Buddy) Pope. After being educated in Butts County public schools, she received her B.S. degree in education from Georgia State College for Women and began her cadet teaching in Moultrie, Ga. She later took a teaching position and taught in Moultrie for two years. In 1940, she married Andrew Jackson (Cap) Welch Sr. and moved to McDonough. Mrs. Welch taught in the Henry County Public School System for a total of 25 years. In 1954, she started her business known as the Henry County Flower Shop. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of McDonough for 62 years; served as president of the McDonough Women's Club; was a member of the Women's Business Association of McDonough; and was a member of three Bridge Clubs. She served her community by participating in the Heart Association, Cancer Society, Girl and Boy Scouts, Parent-Student Association, Henry County High School Scholarship Fund and other numerous organizations. She was also the founder of the Henry County High School Band. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and by a grandson, Hunter J. Welch in 2004. Survivors include her children, Gail Welch Talmadge Notti (Fred) of McDonough, A.J. Buddy Welch Jr. (Kit) of McDonough, Blanton Pope Welch (Marilyn) of Jackson; grandchildren, Herman Talmadge III of Hampton, Tyler Talmadge (Paige) of Key West, Fla., Margaret Elizabeth (Mitt) Talmadge of Miami, Fla., Andy Welch (Cara) of Stockbridge, Kirsten (Justin) Scott of Athens, Ga., Blanton (Cap) Pope Welch Jr. of Beaumont, Texas; great grandchildren, Dane Scott and Caleb Welch. July 3, 2005 ROBERTSON, SARALOUISE "SADIE" BAKER Mrs. Saralouise "Sadie" Baker Robertson, age 89, of Locust Grove, Ga., died July 3, 2005. Mrs. Robertson was born Aug. 27, 1915 in Lucas County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Maude and Elizabeth Hastings Baker and Fred Gilgen and adopted father, George Leslie Baker. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Robertson Jr. in 1974; brother, Bud Baker in 1982; and great grandson Kevin Sims in 2005. Sadie and her husband George established Robertson Furniture Company n 1946, located in Locust Grove, Ga. She used her leadership abilities to enrich the lives of Locust Grove citizens by opening the first "Teen Center" on Main Street, organized the first P.T.A. at Henry County High School and stressed leadership opportunities for women, she served as past president of Henry County Historical Society during which time the "Brown House" was donated. She was the first woman to be elected to the Locust Grove City Council, was citizen of the year for Locust Grove and Henry County in 1987 and Locust Grove Woman of the Year in 1988, she was a charter member of Henry County Medical Center Auxiliary where she served as its first president and earned more than 7,000 volunteer hours, past president of Locust Grove Women's Club, member of the first Leadership Class of Henry County, Woman of Achievement Award from the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Commissioners, member of first Advisory Board for Founders Guaranty Bank, member of the Board of Directors for Green Valley Golf Course, delivered Meals on Wheels, member of Locust Grove Optimist Club and Locust Grove Elections Poll Manager for many years, a member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 25 years. Sadie had a hobby of building model miniature houses after the death of her husband, enjoyed golf and Scrabble. Survivors are her daughters, and son-in-law, Leslie Elizabeth Upchurch of Locust Grove and Kathryn Allyce and Charles Sims of Stockbridge; sister, Mary Newman of Atlanta; grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Shirley of Grand Ledge, MI, David Upchurch of Locust Grove, Chuck and Melea Sims of Stockbridge, Toni Sims of Atlanta and Melissa Sims of Los Angeles; great grandchildren, Eric Upchurch of Honolulu, Hawaii, Amanda Upchurch of Beaverton, Oregon; Levi Shirley of McDonald, Tenn., Lydia Sims of Stockbridge; nieces and nephews, special friend, Will Bowden and numerous close friends. Interment will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery. July 4, 2005 TAYLOR, DAVID BRADLEY Mr. David Bradley Taylor, age 34, of Locust Grove, Ga. died July 4, 2005. Mr. Taylor was born Aug. 22, 1970 in DeKalb County, the son of Opal Isabel Mitchell Taylor and the late Ellis Lynward Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Mechelle Taylor; sons Daniel and Cameron Taylor all of Locust Grove; mother, Opal Taylor of Rex; brothers Todd Taylor of Rex and Scott Taylor and wife Pam of Senoia; mother and father-in-law, Raymond and Linda Anderson of Stockbridge, brothers-in-law, Mark Anderson of Stockbridge and Barry Anderson and wife Cherilyn of Stockbridge; nieces and nephews. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Union City July 5, 2005 EDGAR, DORIS GREEN SETTLE Mrs. Doris Green Settle Edgar, age 80 of McDonough, Ga. died July 5, 2005 at Portsbridge Hospice in Conyers. Mrs. Edgar was born June 22, 1925 in Fulton County, the daughter of the late Nellie Louise Holt and William Zion Green. Her husband Oscar Hall Edgar preceded her in death in April 2005. Survivors are children: Brenda L. Edgar of Locust Grove, Janice A. Smith (Steve) of Oxford and Larry H. Pulliam (Lisa) of Rutledge; sister Geraldine Williams of Covington; 3 stepchildren, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 nephew. Mrs. Edgar was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Monticello, she had retired from DeKalb Medical Center as a central supply technician, and a member of the Henry County Silver Sixties Club. Internment will be in the Decatur City Cemetery at noon. July 6, 2005 SANDERSON, EDITH "DEDE" Edith "Dede" Sanderson, 87, of Stockbridge, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005. She was born in Ironwood, Mich. to William Percy and Nell Thomas Smith. Mrs. Sanderson taught school for 35 years, in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Colorado, and from 1963 to 1980 at Cary Reynolds Elementary in Doraville. She began playing the organ in church at the age of 10. She served as the church organist with many different churches for 61 years of her life. Mrs. Sanderson most recently served as organist with Northwoods United Methodist, Doraville. Education was very important to her, she held a BS in Education and a BA in Organ Performance from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and a MA in Education from the University of Miami in Cincinnati, Ohio. After retiring in 1980 she traveled abroad annually until 1999 with the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree Atlanta; she enjoyed life to its fullest. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Other than her parents her husband Elmer Ross Sanderson also preceded her in death. Mrs. Sanderson is survived by daughters, Beth Sanderson Gentile, and her husband Robin of Ellijay, and Gina Sanderson Puckett, and her husband Michael, of Stockbridge; as well as two grandchildren and their spouses, Joel (Anne) Puckett, Baltimore, Natalie (Dave) Evans, McDonough. July 7, 2005 SMITH, LACIE LEE ANN Lacie Lee Ann Smith, 19, Locust Grove, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2005 at Spalding Regional Medical Center. Lacie was born July 25, 1985 in Kansas City, Mo. to Mitchell Lee Smith and Charmaine Louise Stewart Smith. She was a 2004 graduate of the New Creations Center at Southern Crescent Baptist Church and was pursuing a career as a doctor of physical therapy at Gordon College. She was a member of Grace Community Fellowship Church, loved music, playing the piano, working at the tanning salon and loved her Bronco truck. She had a giving heart, having worked with Compassionate International and Save the Children. July 9, 2005 CUNNINGHAM, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" CARY HALEY Elizabeth "Libby" Cary Haley Cunningham, age 77, of Cornelia, Ga. died Saturday, July 9th at an area hospital. Mrs. Cunningham was born in Roanoke, Va. on January 13, 1928. She was a daughter of the late Edward Allen Haley Sr. and Elizabeth Ambler Haley and was also preceded in death by her husband, George Perry Cunningham, Jr. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, a member of Cornelia First Baptist Church, and a homemaker. WALKER, GLORIA Y. Gloria Y. Walker, 58, of Locust Grove, Ga. died Saturday, July 9, 2005. She was born in Americus, Ga. daughter to the late George and Mary Ballard Yeomans. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Walker, Locust Grove; son, Shawn C. Walker, McDonough; daughter, Sheri Swartz, New Jersey; brothers, Ricky (Sharon) Yeomans, Centerville, Eddie (Sherry) Yeomans, Centerville; mother, Mary (Ballard) Yeomans, grandchildren, Stephanie Cook, Dylan Hudson Jacob Swartz-Walker, Kenzie Walker and Garrett Walker. July 10, 2005 GUY, TERRY Mr. Terry Guy, age 64, of Crystal Creek Drive, Williamson, formerly of Locust Grove, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2005 at the Christian Ministries Hospice. Mr. Guy was born in St. Claire County, Alabama on May 2, 1941 to the late Henry Guy and the late Lera Cook Guy. He was a 40-year member of the Local 387 Iron Workers Union. Interment will follow in Griffin Memorial Gardens. July 11, 2005 JARRELL, CECIL NOAL Cecil Noal Jarrell, 88 of Forest Park, passed away on July 11, 2005. A native of DeKalb County, Mr. Jarrell was a WWII veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He is also a member of Decatur First Wesleyan Church and a member of Chamblee-Sardis Masonic Lodge #444. Mr. Heggood was born in Lanett, Ala. the son of the late Voncele Miller and Jesse Hugh Heggood Sr. He was a member of McDonough First Baptist Church, he had retired as a bus driver in the City of Atlanta after 42 years and enjoyed fishing. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Tucker, Ga. July 13, 2005 BOIVIN, TRAVIS DONALD Travis Donald Boivin, age 33, of Locust Grove, Ga. died Wednesday, July 13, 2005. He was born in Buford, Ga. to Roger Anthony Boivin and Barbara Ann Robinson Wallace. Travis was an avid hunter who loved the outdoors. But most importantly he loved the Lord and his family. He was a caring husband and father. Travis was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and was recently ordained as a Deacon. He was a member of the Music Ministry Praise Team and taught 3-year-old Sunday School. Mrs. Allen was born November 26, 1936 in Henry County the daughter of the late Bessie Mae Walden and Waymon Joseph Rutledge. She was a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother who enjoyed her family, cooking, traveling, shopping and fishing. Mrs. Rutledge is survived by her sons, Ricky Rutledge Sr., David Glenn Rutledge, Andy J. Allen all of Griffin and Travis D. McCombs; sister-in-law, Jean Condo; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. July 14, 2005 WHITE, EARL MONROE Earl Monroe White, age 78, of Locust Grove, Ga. died Thursday, July 14, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Opal Tingle White; son, Gary and wife, Pamela Sayles White and their daughter Amy; daughter, Angela and husband Kevin S. Fort and their daughters, Courtney and Hayley; sister, Jimmie L. Bryant of Satsuma, Fla. and her sons Steve and David Carroll. Earl was a member and Deacon Emeritus of Locust Grove First Baptist Church, and in younger years taught Sunday School, lead RAs, Scouts and Explorers. He was born at 14 Old Ivy Road, Aug. 13, 1926, grew up on Wieuca Road and Lookout Place and attended R. L. Hope, North Fulton, and Georgia Tech. A. B. W. Ellis Eagle and a "boy from Buckhead" blessed by early friends who shaped his life and knowledge of God. He was a WWII veteran with three Bronze/Battle Stars, one Phillipine and two U.S. Presidential Citations. A SFC of MacArthur's Hqs. S.I.S. in the Pacific. He was in U.S. Government Communications from age 17 in Office of FDR, to Active Military Intelligence, the Dept. of Army (Civilian) until retirement at Atlanta Army Depot. Interment will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery. HENDERSON, NANCY J. Nancy J. Henderson, age 79, formerly of Decatur, Ga., passed away July 14, 2005 in Stockbridge Ga. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Ruhl of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Hillary Chambers of Jackson, Ga.; their wives, Carolyn Ruhl and Rhonda Chambers; grandsons, David Ruhl, Mike Ruhl, and Zackary Hatcher. Her loving husband, partner in life and soul mate, Dayton O. Henderson, passed on June 1, 1996. Her heart was broken forever with the loss of her best friend Dayton and she never recovered from his loss. People that knew Nancy and Dayton knew that they were "two peas in a pod" and inseparable. Both Nancy and Dayton have been cremated and their ashes mixed together so that they will become one, once again. July 16, 200 MINTER, SARAH HELEN RODGERS Mrs. Sarah Helen Rodgers Minter, age 90, of McDonough, Ga. died July 16, 2005 at Sacred Journey Hospice. Mrs. Minter was born Nov. 27, 1914 in Henry County, the daughter of the late Martha Cordelle Selfridge and James Otis Rodgers Sr. She was an active member of McDonough First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and a previous member of Oakland Baptist Church where she was a pianist. Mrs. Minter was a graduate of McDonough High School Class of 1931. She retired with 22 years of service with Henry County Superior Court as a deputy clerk. She was a member of UDC, B.&P.W., Oakland Home Demonstration Club and enjoyed gardening, her family and friends. Mrs. Minter was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lafayette Minter in 1986 after 51 years of marriage. Also preceding her was a sister Cora Ellen Rodgers in 1910 and a brother, James Otis Rodgers in 1996. Interment will be at Eternal Hills in Snellville. July 17, 2005 GORMAN, WILLIAM EARL Mr. William Earl Gorman, age 81, of McDonough, Ga. died July 17, 2005 at Sacred Journey Hospice. Mr. Gorman was born April 18, 1924 in Atlanta, Ga., the son of the late Larkin J. Gorman and Geraldine Humphreys. Mr. Gorman was retired from the military, serving in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War and retired from Marta as a rail supervisor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Ann Tarrant Gorman. Mr. Gorman is survived by his children, James W. July 19, 2005 FISHER, JACK MILTON Mr. Jack Milton Fisher, age 93, of McDonough died July 19, 2005. Mr. Fisher was born September 17, 1911 in Henry County the son of the late Daisy Lee Lewis and Charles Stewart Fisher. Mr. Fisher was a farmer who did not mind hard work, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, the Braves and his grandchildren. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific. Mr. Fisher was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Kate Swann Fisher in 1966, grandson, Donald Davis in 1981 and brother, Howard Fisher in 1987. Survivors are his children, Jackie and Ronnie Stewart of McDonough, Jane and Sammy Chamblee of McDonough and Johnny Fisher of McDonough; sisters Mrs. Agnes Beers and Mrs. Marcia Swanson of McDonough; brother, Lewis Fisher of McDonough; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. July 20, 2005 THOMPSON, LEE NELL PLAYER Mrs. Lee Nell Player Thompson, 72, of Maynard Court, Jackson, Ga. died Wednesday evening, July 20, 2005 at the Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale. She was born in Blakeley County, Ga. October 21, 1932 daughter of the late Frank and Essie Player. She was wife of the late Charles G. Thompson who died in 1967. Mrs. Thompson was a retired employee of the Snapper Co. in McDonough. Survivors include her children, Patricia James of McDonough, Ga., Mike Thompson and Sherri Allen Pitch of Jackson, Ga., Danny Thompson of Jackson Ga., Kay and G.T. Mr. James Troy Chafin Jr., age 83, of McDonough passed away Friday, July 22, 2005 at the Sacred Journey Hospice. Mr. Chafin was born August 20, 1921 in Henry County to the late James Troy Chafin, Sr. and the late Lillian Owen Chafin. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Jean Sirles Chafin in 1991 and by a brother, Clinton Chafin in 1994. Jim, Little Troy, or Brother, as he was known, was a 1938 graduate of the McDonough High School, was owner of Chafin Furniture for 39 years, past president of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, member of the Kelley Presbyterian Church, and was avid golfer. Mr. Chafin served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, having completed 35 missions as a B-24 pilot in the European theater and retired after 22 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. BROCK, NANCY YVONNE Mrs. Nancy Yvonne Sitton Brock, age 67, of McDonough, died July 30, 2005 at Henry Medical Center. Mrs. Brock was born Nov. 13, 1937 in Rocky Mount, Ga. the daughter of the late Aurelia Rowe and Luper Sitton. Mrs. Brock was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed her family, flowers and gardening, and most of all, her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Lee Brock in 1987. Survivors are her children, Brenda and James Boozer of McDonough, Nancy and Edwin Conley of Woodstock and Allen Lee and Tracy Brock, Jr. of Molena; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. No date listed BAKER, HOWARD FRANKLIN, Ed.D Dr. Baker was born Oct. 13, 1923 in Savannah, Ga., lived in Waynesboro, Ga. and graduated from Valdosta High School. He attended Emory Junior College in Valdosta and worked for the U.S. Engineer Department at Moody Air Force Base. He married Mary Newton and they have been together for 63 years. They have a son, Dr. Gordon N. Baker, retired from Henry County School System and is now Head of Public Services at the Clayton State University Library. Dr. Baker spent 34 months in the U.S. Army Corps, of which 13 months was spent with the Eighth Air Force in England. He flew 28 missions as a ball turret gunner on B-24 and B-17 aircraft. He graduated from Emory University, Georgia State University and received his Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University. He served as principal of Locust Grove Junior High School, Stockbridge Junior High School and Henry County High School. He worked for the Georgia Department of Education in Vocational Rehabilitation. In 1968, he was elected to the first of three 4-year terms as Superintendent of the Henry County School System. He retired in 1980. In 1981, he was appointed headmaster of Meadow Creek Academy in McDonough and served in that capacity for three years. Since then, he has been most happily retired. Dr. Baker is a United Methodist, a Mason, a Shriner, a Georgia Salzburger, a member of the American Legion, VFW and an active member of the Henry County Retired Educators Association. He was a member of the Henry County Public Library Board for 12 years. Dr. Baker was a resident of Tybee Island, Ga. from 1992 to 2000 where he was member of Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church and served on the administrative council and various committees. He was vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tybee Island Historical Society, secretary and vice-president of the Tybee Island Optimist Club, member of the Tybee Lite Shrine Club and a volunteer and supporter of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum at Pooler, Ga. Dr. Baker, after returning to McDonough due to declining health, was only able to participate in limited activities at McDonough First United Methodist Church and the Henry County Retired Educators Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Carrye Baker; son, Howard F. Baker, Jr.; brother Clarence E. Baker, Jr.; and sister, Margaret Virginia Baker.
