JENKINS, JOHN WALTON John Walton Jenkins, 86, of Stockbridge and Hampton, died Nov. 1, 2005 of complications from Parkinson's disease. His body was donated to the Emory Medical School, as he had requested. He was born in Atlanta, August 13, 1919, to the Rev. Frank Ellison Jenkins and Sarah Morris Jenkins. He was educated in schools in Georgia and Kentucky where his father filled various pulpit assignments of the Methodist Church. He graduated from Emory University and attended Candler School of Theology. He completed an advanced degree in Business Administration at Harvard University at the age of 62. During World War II John worked for Scripto Manufacturing doing defense work and then served in the Navy for one year. As a student he was assigned to Trinity Methodist Church where he met and married Helen Isham Wynne on Dec. 21, 1943. They were married for 62 years. Children are John C. (Barbara) of Morrow; Robert W. (Clara) of McDonough; Sarah Anne (Bill) Hoover, Reston, VA; Jim (Shelli) of Jonesboro and Laura (Bob) Boal, Tucker. Grandchildren are Chuck (Donna) Jenkins, Kent, Ohio; Terri (Craig) Weimorts, Bainbridge; Christy (Chad) Walters, Stockbridge; David (Megan) Jenkins, Edinburg, Scotland; Alex, Ellen and Michael Boal, Tucker. Great-grandchildren include Grant and Christian Jenkins, Kent, Ohio; Abby Lane Weimorts, Bainbridge. John, a fourth generation Methodist minister, was always deeply religious and served several Methodist churches in Georgia as a supply pastor during his lifetime, including Emanuel Methodist in Glynn County for 14 years, Bishop Methodist and Rutledge Methodist. When the state opened Jekyll Island as a state park he conducted interdenominational services at Faith Chapel for seven years. He first conducted Easter sunrise services informally on the beach and later, as services grew, in the indoor Aquarama arena with other members of the Glynn County Ministerial Association. As a Methodist minister, John was known for his rich baritone singing voice and for his ability to make Biblical stories, especially from the Old Testament, come alive for his congregation. Former Atlanta Constitution editor Eddie Barker, who once visited one of his services, wrote about the experience, “all seemed caught, captured, conscious of the coming comfort,” and “He prayed his prayers unhurriedly, as if mindful that meditation is not measured in minutes.” John was a gifted tool designer and toolmaker. While in Brunswick in the 1950's he was employed by the Hercules Powder Company. In 1962 the family moved to the Athens area where he became head of the Instrument Shop at the University of Georgia. Here he designed and made equipment for research projects at the university. Later he was employed as an engineer at Scripto in Atlanta, Ronthor Reis in Social Circle and Lithonia Lighting in Conyers before forming his own company in 1974. Bellwether Toolmakers initially specialized in tools for the textile weaving industry and John was successful in developing and improving the design for grippers carrying yarn across high-speed weaving machines. In establishing Bellwether he insisted that the company must pay for itself without being in debt and he held to that principle. As a result he relied on his ingenuity and skills formed during his upbringing as a child of the Great Depression and a child of an impoverished Methodist minister. He designed and built his own machinery as the need arose, frequently utilizing household items in his machinery. Over his lifetime, John developed three devices that resulted in U.S. patents, one for a creative way of rolling designs in plastic sheets, one for a unique rehabilitation exercise machine and one for an improvement in projectile-type weaving machines. Two particular goals he set for himself he accomplished with great satisfaction. He saw the day when all his children received college degrees and some of his children went on to further study. The other goal in which he was so interested was the establishment of the Frank E. Jenkins, Sr. Endowed Scholarship at Candler School of Theology. The scholarship honors his father, remembering the financial hardships he and his father both faced to receive higher education. In addition to his devoted wife and his immediate family, John is survived by his brother, the Rev. Frank Jenkins, Jr., Watkinsville. His sister, Mary Jenkins Oldham of Millersburg, KY, Jonesboro and Hampton, predeceased him. Nephews include Frank Jenkins III, Cartersville, and Morris Jenkins, M.D., Calhoun.
