Mr. Douglas was born July 28, 1923 in Chesterfield, S.C., the son of the late Pearl Kendrick and Duncan Vivian Douglas. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. He retired as a transit operator. He enjoyed camping, fishing, the outdoors and nature and reading. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Craig Douglas; sisters, Vera Odom and Emma Rivers and a brother Alger Douglas. Survivors are his loving wife. Edna Lawhorn Douglas of McDonough; daughter and son-in-law, Donna Lee and Donnie Alsup of Knoxville, Tenn.; brother, Aubrey Douglas of Wadesboro, N.C.; stepchildren, Bryan Alsup of Knoxville and Brad Alsup of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park. January 2, 2006 McCLAMMAN, SARA A. Sara A. McClamma, age 76, of Stockbridge, Ga., died Jan. 2, 2006. Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Scigliano, of Nevada; son, David McClamma and wife, Sheila of Stockbridge; sister, Arlena Mackle; twin brothers, Watts and Wallace Aaron; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. MAYO, MATTIE RUTH Mattie Ruth Mayo, age 89, of McDonough, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006. She was born in McDonough, Ga., to the late Dallas and Lolie Ellen Wilkerson Mayo. Miss Mayo was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Brothers David and Betty Mayo of Jackson, Ga., J.D. Mayo of Newnan, Ga. and several nieces and nephews survive her. Graveside services will be held at Bethany Baptist Church. CARMICHAEL, SARAH JOHNSTON Sarah Johnston Carmichael, age 94, of McDonough, died Jan. 2, 2006. Mrs. Carmichael was born on March 23, 1911 in Palmetto, to the late William Hardaway and Myrtie Givens Johnston. She grew up in Palmetto and graduated from Palmetto High School in 1927. She furthered her education at Georgia State College for Women of Milledgeville where she earned her teaching degree. Mrs. Carmichael taught elementary school until her marriage in 1935 to Harvey Brown, who preceded her in death. In 1952 she married Henry Benjamin (H.B.) Carmichael of McDonough, to whom she was married for 41 years. Mr. Carmichael, and his brother, Cam, owned and operated Carmichael Hosiery Mill in McDonough for many years. Mr. Carmichael preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Carmichael had the distinction of being one of the first female deacons in McDonough Presbyterian Church where she was a member for 54 years and was the oldest person on the roster. She loved life and people and was an inspiration to her family, friends, and all who knew her. Mrs. Carmichael is survived by her brother-in-law, Robert M. Penland, Jr., Decatur; numerous nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren. Interment will follow at McDonough City Cemetery. POWEN, WILLIAM J. "BILL" Mr. William J. “Bill” Owen, age 72, of McDonough passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at the Henry Medical Center. Bill was born Feb. 24, 1933 in Buford, Ga., to the late Clara Lou Stargell and William Clyde Owen. He retired after 30 years with the U.S. Post Office and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Claudette Owen; sons and daughters in law, Todd and Michelle Owen of Locust Grove, Lloyd and Jamie Owen of Oregon City, Ore.; grandchildren, Seth, Hannah, and Grace Owen; brothers and sisters in law, W. C. Owen of Rome, Larry and Liz Owen of Sarasota, Fla., Cary and Norma Owen of Lawrenceville; nieces and nephews. MILLER, CHARLES CLARENCE, JR. Charles Clarence Miller, Jr., known as C.C., 72 of Jonesboro, GA., died January 2, 2006. He was born in Franklin County and was the son of Charles and Grace Miller. Charles, Jr. served the Lord diligently and is now with Jesus. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mavis; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Paul Amick of Lakemont, GA; daughter- in-law of TX, Frances Miller, married to Glenn who died at 42 and five grandchildren, Jacob, Daniel and Andrew Amick and Samantha and Michelle Miller. January 3, 2006 FORT, MARTHA BENNETT Miss Martha Bennett Fort of Jonesboro, passed away peacefully at age 74 on Jan. 3, 2006 after a long illness. A private family memorial service was held. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla. and had been a long time resident of Jonesboro since graduating from Jonesboro High School. She was a retired social worker and school teacher having graduated from Randolph Macon Womans College. She was a life member of Alpha Delta Pi and a member of both the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and the Wieuca Road Baptist Church of Atlanta. She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Fort Brewer, of Fayetteville and a nephew, three nieces and a host of friends and people that she helped along the way. January 4, 2006 McKINNESS, WILLIS S. Willis S. McKiness, age 82, of Stockbridge, died January 4, 2006. He was honorably discharged after serving his country in World War II. He will be greatly missed. STEPHENS, MARGARET MARY (BOYD) Margaret Mary (Boyd) Stephens, age 66, of Stockbridge, Ga., died peacefully at her sons residence in Jackson, Georgia. She was born on May 28, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to the late John and Margaret (Gleason) Boyd. Her grandson Justin Stephens also preceded her in death. Margaret married Robert M. Stephens on June 16, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and also worked as a lunch room attendant in various schools in Illinois. Margaret was a nurses aide at the former Westbury Nursing Home in McDonough, Ga., and enjoyed going to yard sales. January 5, 2006 ADAMSON, DAVID CLARK, SR. David Clark Adamson, Sr., age 58, of Macon died Jan. 5, 2006. He was retired from AFFES at Fort Gillem after 18 years. McNulty, age 74, of McDonough, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 in an automobile accident in Florida. Linda was born Dec. 20, 1931 in South Korea to the late Sok Kyu Choe and Mai Son Kim. She was preceded in death by her husband, James McNulty in 1997. DEBORAH KAY, HAND Deborah Kay Hand, age 50, of 409 East Maple Street, Thomaston, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough, Ga. Ms. Hand was a 1973 graduate of R. E. Lee High School and was the first female volunteer fire fighter in Upson County. She was a 23-year veteran of the Henry County Fire Department and served as a paramedic/firefighter in the Emergency Response Division. She also served for 23 years on the Atlanta Motor Speedway Safety Team. Ms. Hand retired from the Henry County Fire Department in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Katie Hand of Thomaston; a sister, Mrs. Gwen (Terry) Bundy of Thomaston; two brothers, Ken Hand and Keith (Sonya) Hand of Thomaston; six nieces and nephews and many aunts and uncles. Interment will be at South View Cemetery in Thomaston, Ga. January 7, 2006 GOBER, J.W. JW Gober, age 76, of Locust Grove died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. He was born in Atlanta to the late General Jackson and Bessie Tibbett Gober. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Scrub Creek Baptist Church in Cross City, FL. He enjoyed watching TV and flea markets. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Betty A. Summers Gober in October 2000. January 9, 2006 ROGULA, TIMOTHY "TIM" Mr. Timothy “Tim” Steven Rogula, age 39, of Locust Grove died Jan. 9, 2006 at Piedmont Hospital. Mr. Rogula was born June 23, 1966 in Wayne County, Michigan. He worked as an air traffic controller for the FAA in Hampton. He loved being with his family and friends, being outdoors, and hunting. He and his wife served as foster parents for three babies. He graduated from Jonesboro High School, Class of 1984. Mr. Rogula was preceded in death by his father, Steve Rogula. Derek graduated in 2003 from Union Grove High School, was involved in baseball and basketball and for the past year had been employed with the Henry County Fire Department. Mr. Martin was born November 2, 1959 in Cobb County. He was a mechanic with Delta airlines, he enjoyed woodworking, being a handy man, and NASCAR. His father, Clarence Austin Martin, preceded him in death. RINGLER, MARY ELIZABETH Mary Elizabeth Ringler, age 84, a resident of Rt. 2 Tacy Community Philippi, W.Va. and a former resident of Atlanta passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006 at her residence. She was born Oct. 2, 1921 in Philippi, a daughter of the late Austin and Grace (Upton) Nestor. She was united in marriage June 27, 1957 to Sanford F. Ringler who preceded her in death in 2000. Surviving is one niece, Susan and husband Charles Schrader of Fairmont, W.Va.; great nephews, Chris and Brett Schrader; several cousins, special canine companion, Baby. Mrs. Ringler was preceded in death by one brother, Austin Nestor Jr., one brother-in-law; and two sister-in-laws. Mrs. Ringler was a graduate of the Philippi High School. She retired with 37 years of service as a supervisor from the Owens Illinois Glass Company in Atlanta. She was a member of the Eastern Airlines and Owens Illinois Bowling Leagues, Kasson United Methodist Church, a former Belle of Barbour County, and also the CEO of Tacy. Mrs. Ringler was a green thumb flower gardener. She had a great pride of various floral beds in her yard, both exotic and garden varieties of flowers and plants. She devoted endless hours in her labor of love for her flowers. Mrs. Ringler was an avid sports fan, favorite teams such as Philip Barbour High School basketball, along with many other sports teams. January 11, 2006 ZIMMERMAN, MARGARET P. Margaret P. Zimmerman, age 83, of McDonough, and formerly of Rex, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006. She was born in Hiram to the late Hoyt and Leona Kiker Porter. She was a long time member of the Eagle's Landing Church of God. Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by her daughters: Judy Jordan and JoAnn Cain both of McDonough; grandchildren, Steve Jordan, Michael Jordan, Julie Jordan, Bradley Jordan, Jamison Jordan, Stacy Johnson, Cari Collum, Cathy Shea, Christie Adams, Cindy Kight; and 10 great- grandchildren. Interment will follow at Old Austell Powder Springs Cemetery. DALE, NORMAN DURWARD HALE Norman Durward Hale, age 65, of McDonough, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006. He was born in Atlanta, GA, March 28, 1940 to the late Durward C. and Evelyn Wise Hale. Mr. Hale graduated from Forest Park High School in 1958 and played football at the University of Georgia during the 1958 and 1959 seasons. He was a member of the Jones Memorial Church and a member of the Henry County Booster and Athletic Club. Mr. Hale was a retired Electrician from local IBEW 613. Mr. Hale is survived by his sons, Chris (Lisa) Hale, Greg (Angela) Hale, Clint (Kim) Hale; grandsons, David (Chrystal), Joshua, James; granddaughters, Laura, Lindsay, Alyssa; sister, Sara Jane (Sally) Hale; former spouse, Linda Colfax; and many cousins. Internment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. BANKS, JOHN WILBER John Wilber Banks of McDonough died Jan. 11, 2006 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta from surgery complications. He was born in Jacksonville, N.C. on Feb. 9, 1941 to Wilbur and Josie Banks. John was a wonderful person who lived and died with dignity, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. John was a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. He was retired from Delta Airlines in 1995 after 23 years of service. After retirement from Delta, he was active in Primerica Financial Services in McDonough, Ga. John was a devoted member of Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church. He will best be remembered as a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His children and grandchildren will always treasure his love for them and the good times they shared. John’s passions were his love for his family and, secondly, cars and NASCAR racing. John is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Betty Eubank Banks, also from Jacksonville, N.C.; daughter, Kim Banks Gullatt and her husband Ronnie; son, Steve Banks and his wife Tammy; three grandchildren, James and Tori Gullatt, and Jonathan Banks; sister, Ruby Banks Jones and husband Bob; brother, Troy Banks; nieces, Dawn Jones Holden and Lauren Banks. He was preceded in death by his parents. DAVIS, RONALD GEORGE Ronald George Davis, age 57, died peacefully at home in Norcross on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, after a year-long battle with cancer. Born in Ellijay on Dec. 26, 1948, to Gladys (Logan) and George Davis, Ron moved to Atlanta at age 8 and became active at Coney Baptist Church. A graduate of Forest Park High School, Ron is a Viet Nam era Army veteran who later earned Accounting and Aviation Management degrees from GSU. A senior accountant for Delta Airlines (26 years), he was one of two accountants sent to Germany to review the books when Delta bought Pan American. He did Delta's tax returns for many years and spent the last several years managing the entire airplane and parts inventory. Taking early retirement in 2000, Ron spent the next five years working as an auditor for Tax Management Associates. His love and knowledge of sports would qualify him as a sportswriter anywhere. The proud possessor of 12 Peachtree and many half-marathons T-shirts, he loved golf and his Georgia Bulldogs. Adventurous, he traveled all over the USA as well as Europe and Asia with his wife Sharon. Ron received letters from friends and family for his 2005 birthday that recalled fond memories and what they valued in Ron. These comments show Ron is remembered for his friendship, his integrity, his sense of humor, and his willingness to help others. Ron is survived by his wife Sharon; children Kimberly Gerhardt, Kevin (Kim) Davis, and Kristin Hardin; step-sons Adam (Michelle) and Jonathan (Jamee) Shaver; seven grandchildren; sisters, Judy (Randy) Bussell and Bobbie Holbrooks; mother, Gladys Davis, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. January 14, 2006 HOLDER, LOIS LOUVENIA Miss Lois Louvenia Holder, age 91, of Locust Grove, Ga., died Jan. 14, 2006 at Laurel Park in Stockbridge, Ga. Miss Holder was born July 21, 1914 in Henry County the daughter of the late Nannie Mae Kelley and John Thomas Holder. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church where she had served as a past president of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday school. Lois Holder, who had never married and had children of her own, was a second mom, grandmother and aunt to all of her loving family. Brothers, Carlton A. Holder, Dewey L. Holder, Thomas Odell Holder and James Emory Holder, preceded her in death. January 16, 2006 BUTTRILLE, DEL The Honorable Del Buttrill, age 64, of McDonough, GA died January 16, 2006. He was born in Decatur, GA on January 27, 1941 to S. A. Buttrill and the late Thelma Carrie Olds Buttrill. Judge Buttrill moved to Henry County with his family at the age of sixteen and graduated from Henry County High School. His education included a BA in Art and History from Norwich University in Vermont, as well as attending Atlanta Law School and Presbyterian College. He received training from The National Judicial College in 1984, and later served as a member of their faculty. Judge Buttrill served in the United States Marine Corp from January 1958 to October 1961. Following a career in business selling and installing hospital laboratory equipment, he was elected Probate Judge of Henry County and served in that role from January 29, 1982 until the present. In addition to his career, he also was an ordained Baptist minister and served as a Deacon at Salem Baptist Church where he was a member. His church leadership also included beginning the first two ChildrenÕs Church programs in Henry County as well as teaching the Adult III Sunday School Class at Salem Baptist Church. Judge Buttrill served as President of the Council of Probate Judges of Georgia in 2001, and chairman of the Training Council from 1996 -1997, and chairman of the Legal Research Committee in 2004 Š 2005. Annually, he also served on various committees, including Legislative, Budget, and Court Rules and Forms. Judge Buttrill also instituted the first work release program for inmates in 1995, the first Impact Panel for D.U.I. offenders in this area in 1988, and initialized the first private probation system in the area. His civic activities in Henry County included being an organizing agent for the Henry County Council on Aging in 1987. His leadership activities with the Council included starting the Meals on Wheels program in 1987, a county wide Senior Services Transportation system in 1988, and starting the annual Miles for Meals Walk fundraiser in 1989. Judge Buttrill was also instrumental in organizing the Henry County Arts Alliance in 1989. His vision of A Friends House, a shelter for abused children, began with fundraising in 1993. With the completion of the facility in 1998, more than $1.5 million dollars in local money had been raised. In 2005, the new addition to the shelter was named the Del Buttrill Adolescent Wing. He was an active member of the Kiwanis, Rotary, and Optimist Clubs in Henry County. Judge ButtrillÕs professional awards included Outstanding Judge of the State of Georgia by the GovernorÕs DUI Task Force in 1988, Outstanding Judge in 1992 by the MADD Organization, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of 1995, The W.L. Carter Public Service Award by the Chamber in 2004. He received a Distinguished Service Recognition by the Georgia Council of Probate Court Judges in 2005, as well as the County Officer of the Year in 2005. Outside of his career, Judge Buttrill had a love for art. His favorite hobby was painting, and some of his work hangs in the Henry County Probate Office as well as around the community. His favorite subjects were Henry County points of interest, including scenes of the McDonough Square, the historic Henry County Courthouse, and Shingleroof Campground. Important to him were his church, being in the choir, and teaching his Sunday school class. January 22, 2006 THOMPSON, JERRELL LEVERNE Mr. Jerrell Leverne Thompson, age 77, of McDonough, Ga., died Jan. 22, 2006 at Southern Regional Medical Center. Mr. Thompson was born Jan. 26, 1928 in Butts County the son of the late Bertha Tolleson and Ghue Thompson. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, had retired from Fort Gillem as a crane operator with 42 years of service, and was a member and a past master of Masonic Lodge No. 37. He was born Oct. 6, 1948 in Atlanta to Eunice Louise Spurlin Bates and the late Thomas Lawson Bates. In the 60’s, he was the Welter Weight Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in Atlanta for nine years straight. He was of the Baptist faith, was owner of Bates Construction, loved sports, was a loving family man, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was born in Cumming, Ga., to the late Henry Grady and Mattie Azalee Tesseneer Mullinax. Mr. Mullinax retired from the Henry County Board of Education/Bus Transportation and was a member of Philippi Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Most important to him was family. CANADY, LORENE SCONYERS Mrs. Lorene “Monk” Sconyers Canady, age 84, of Swainsboro, Ga., passed away Jan. 28, 2006 at Dogwood Forest in Stockbridge. Mrs. Canady was born Sept. 14, 1921 in Swainsboro, the daughter of the late Mary Canady and Math C. Sconyers. Everyone that knew her loved her. She served as Emanuel County Tax Commissioner for 25 years. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, gardening and sewing. Mrs. Canady was a member of Swainsboro First Baptist Church. He was born in Flippen to the late Worther Lee and Annie Mae Holloway Duffey. Mr. Duffey was a very active member of the Jodeco Baptist Church where he was a charter member. He was a member for 50 years in the Masonic Lodge No. 619 and was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was born in Newberry, S.C. to the late John Porter and Ora Caldwell Thompson. Mr. Thompson enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on lawn mowers and cutting hair. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Wilma Annette Thompson. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Ruby; son, Homer C. Thompson Jr., Griffin ; daughter, Ruby J.
