Mr. Payne was born July 18, 1924 in Henry County, Georgia to the late Emmett Marvin Payne and the late Mary Hayden Mayo Payne. He is preceded in death by his brother, Emmett H. Payne. Mr. Payne married Doris Louise Horton February 21, 1951 in Aiken, S.C. She passed away on July 24, 2002. He was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War where he was a supply clerk and a mechanic. He suffered frostbite to both feet and ankles while standing guard duty and was sent home after serving for over a year. Mr. Payne worked for Ford Motor Company Hapeville Assembly Plant for 30 years, where he was known as “Strawberry Payne” because of his red hair and fair complexion. He retired to LeHigh Acres, FL in 1987 where he ran his own landscaping business. He moved back to Georgia in 2002. Mr. Payne loved fishing, reading the newspaper, traveling, watching Braves baseball and NASCAR Racing, especially the No. 6 car of Mark Martin. Mr. Payne was a member of New Covenant Church of God in McDonough. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who made sure all the kids knew how to fish, play baseball and hammer a nail in straight. Survivors include son, Bill and Glenda Payne of Hampton; grandchildren, Rhiannon and LCPL Juan Pineros of Camp LeJeune, N.C., Matthew Richard Payne of Newport, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Megan, Brandon James of Camp LeJeune, N.C.; Seraphin Payne of Windsor, Vt.; sister-in-law, Elsie McLean of Griffin; several nieces and nephews. March 3, 2006 MOONEY, GLEN Mr. Glen Mooney of Hampton passed away Friday, March 3, 2006 at the age of 56. Interment to follow at Westwood Gardens Cemetery, Griffin. THORNTON, CHARLEEN HARDY Mrs. Charleen Hardy Thornton, age 82 of Griffin, passed away Friday, March 3, 2006 at Christian Ministries Hospice. Mrs. Thornton was born June 19, 1923 in Pike County. She was a member of Griffin First United Methodist Church, the Joy Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Griffin Kiwanis Club. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Calvin Hardy. Survivors include her husband, Jesse H. Thornton of Griffin; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Richard Segall of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Bonnie Hardy of McDonough; step-son and his wife, Doug and Carolyn Thornton of Griffin; step daughters, Laura Thornton of Griffin, Dottie and Paul Partin also of Griffin; brother, Kelly Williamson of Alabama; 10 grandchildren, Max and Lottie Segall, David, Heather and Sam Hardy, Tom, Suzanna and Taylor Partin, Greg and Cara Thornton; several nieces and nephews and special cousins, Gwen Murphy and Donald Thompson. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. PHILLIPS, CAROLYN BARFIELD Carolyn Barfield Phillips, age 61, of Riverdale died Friday, March 3, 2006. She was born in Columbus to the late William Oscar and Coy Washam Barfield. Mrs. Phillips was the owner and operator of Wonderlands Yorkies and was known for her generosity and compassion. Most important to her was her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was loved by many and will be missed by all. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, Bob Phillips, Riverdale; children, Debbie (Ricky) Brannon , Phenix City, Ala., Cammy S. Lott , Smith Station, Ala.; Robby Phillips, Riverdale; Cathy (Rodney) Heaton Jackson; siblings, Rena Cannon, Smiths, Ala.; Dick Barfield, San Antonio, Texas; Bo Barfield, San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren and 25 four legged children — her Yorkies. Interment at Parkhill Cemetery. SPALDING, JOANNE Joanne Spalding of McDonough, formerly of Knoxville, Tenn, died Friday, March 3, 2006. She was 78 years old and had been a resident of Cornerstone Nursing Home for four years. Ms. Spalding was the daughter of the late Robert Edward and Roberta Bent Spalding of LaGrange, Ill. Ms. Spalding grew up in LaGrange, graduated Lyons Township High School, and attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.. As a young woman, she was a librarian at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She had a special interest in music and art and did volunteer work with the Arts to the Schools program in Knoxville, her home for 30 years. Ms. Spalding is survived by her son, Douglas Spalding Simpson, and daughter-in-law, Angie Strickland Simpson, of McDonough; younger sister Cynthia Spalding of New York; two grandsons, Gray Strickland Simpson and William Spalding Simpson of McDonough, former husband, Thomas McNider Simpson of Knoxville, Tenn; two nieces and one nephew. Her older sister, Nancy Spalding Stoutamyer of Oakland, Calif., preceded her in death. Ms. Spalding’s ashes will be interred in the garden of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian-Universalist Church of Knoxville. March 4, 2006 FREEMAN, CATHY LYNN FULLER Mrs. Cathy Lynne Fuller Freeman, age 35, of Locust Grove, Ga., died March 4, 2006 at Emory University Medical Center. She was born Dec. 2, 1970 in Clayton County. Lynne enjoyed country music, the outdoors, animals, birds and flowers. She attended Stockbridge High School. Fuller of Locust Grove. Interment be at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park. March 5, 2006 POLLARD, JAMES LEWIS Mr. James Lewis Pollard, age 77 of McDonough passed away March 5, 2006 at his residence. He was born July 24, 1928 in Geneva, Ala., to the late William Emmett and Sophie Douglas Pollard. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and retired after 22 years with the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church and volunteered over 10 years with In His Name Food Pantry. Survivors include his wife of over 56 years, Joyce A. Douglas Pollard of McDonough; children, Michael D. and Audrey Pollard of Dallas, Cheryl and Charles Sargent of McDonough, Richard J. March 6, 2006 PARTAIN, BESSIE Mrs. Bessie Partain, 74, of Barnesville died Monday, March 6, 2006 at the Spalding County Healthcare Facility. She was a native of Lamar County and the daughter of the late Mr. Hester Warren Willis and the late Mrs. Rosa Knight Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Norman Quinnon Partain, by a sister, Mrs. Florence Nadine Peacock, and by a brother Mr. Julian Warren Willis. Mrs. Partain was retired as a Lunch Room Manager with the Lamar County Board of Education. She was a member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church of Thomaston. HAWKINS, HAROLD M. Harold M. Hawkins, age 76, of Hampton, died Monday, March 6, 2006. He was born in Ellijay to the late Guy Washington and Flossie Hood Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins retired from Atlantic Steel with 42 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Jacque Hawkins; son, Russell M. (Kelly) Hawkins, Hampton; daughters, Terri Lynn Hawkins, Hampton, Michelle (David) Makowski, Florence, Ky; brothers, Paris (Myrtle) Hawkins, Jonesboro, Guy W. Lonnie Wilson, Sr., age 69, of Stockbridge, Tuesday, March 7, 2006. He was born in Atlanta to the late Mahlon Newton and Nellie Smith Wilson. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Wilson, James Wilson and Frank Wilson. Mr. Wilson was an Army veteran and worked in heating and air conditioning for 50 plus years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Interment will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery KELLER, JOHN PAYTON Mr. John Payton Keller, age 72, of Hampton, died March 7, 2006, at Southern Regional Medical Center. Mr. Keller was born in Baldwin, the son of the late Rachel Simmon and John Payton Keller Sr. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed racing, traveling, playing guitar and riding his motorcycle. Interment will be at the McDonough City Cemetery. March 8, 2006 HOOTEN, JAMES James (Jimmy) Hooten, age 44 of Auburn, Ga., formerly of McDonough, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006. He was born in Griffin. Mr. Hooten was preceded in death by his father, Leon Hooten. He loved to travel and liked antiques. Mr. Hooten is survived by his mother, Lillie Lorene Hooten of Riverdale; sisters, Gwendolyn Carol Corley of Stockbridge, Donna Marie Hammock of McDonough, Ga., Kathy Annice Rivers of McDonough, Ga.; several nieces and nephews and his best friend, Max. Interment at McDonough City Cemetery. ABERNATHY, STEPHEN A. Stephen A. Abernathy, 59, of Locust Grove, passed away on March 8, 2006. Steve was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Abernathy, daughter Kristina (Mark) Stackow, son Brad (Janann) Abernathy, grandsons Tyler and Cayden Abernathy, sister Brenda (Dave) Millican, niece and nephews Beth, Lee and Michael Millican, and many close friends. Steve was born Jan. 6, 1947. He graduated from Sandy Springs High School in 1965 and DeKalb College in 1967. He was employed by Delta Airlines for 28 years. Steve had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. His home, located on a beautiful and pristine lake in Henry County, provided an ideal place for him to share his knowledge and love of the outdoors with his son and grandsons. He spent many happy hours with them enjoying nature’s beauty and fishing. Steve’s mission in life in recent years was to work through Alcoholics Anonymous in helping others overcome drug and alcohol addictions. He had celebrated his 11th anniversary with AA, and worked tirelessly in helping hundreds of others overcome their addictions. On Jan. 13, Steve suffered a heart attack. He died from resulting respiratory complications. He was surrounded by his family and several close friends when he passed away. Before his passing Steve spent 54 days in the Intensive Care Unit of Spalding Regional Medical Center. His family will never be able to fully express their gratitude to Dr. John Dupree and his staff for their loving kindness and heroic efforts to save Steve’s life. The body will be cremated. March 9, 2006 BLANKS, KEITH Mr. Keith Blanks of Riverdale died March 9, 2006. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Blanks and is survived by his mother, Donata Blanks, Riverdale; sister, Kasey Blanks, Riverdale; brother, Kevin Blanks, Riverdale; grandmothers, Dollie Harris, Riverdale and Dee Chamberlain of Fairburn; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Interment in Holly Hill Memorial Park. Marh 10, 2006 CROWE, HUGH L. Hugh L. Crowe, D.C., 79, of Stockbridge, passed away on March 10, 2006. He was born in East Point, grew up in Lawrenceville; and practiced in College Park for 50 years, and Stockbridge for six years. Dr. Crowe was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, friend, mentor, and doctor to many. He is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 58 years, three children (Hal, Keith, and Lee), five grandchildren, sister Pauline, nieces and nephews. Hugh was born on February 11, 1927. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy in World War II and the Korean Conflicts, receiving an honorable discharge in May 1946 and October 1952. He attended the University of Georgia (Atlanta Division) from 1946-1948 and Palmer School of Chiropractic from 1948-1951, graduating in August 1951. Dr. Crowe began his chiropractic practice in late 1952 in College Park. During his 53 years in practice he was the recipient of multiple honors and awards (too many to list). He served as a two-term president of the Georgia Chiropractic Association and received their Chiropractor of the Year award in 1984. He was an active member of other various chiropractic organizations, including the Georgia Council on Chiropractic and the International Chiropractors Association. On Dec. 20, 2002, Dr. Crowe celebrated his 50th anniversary in practice and was presented with a proclamation from the City of College park officially naming Dec. 20 “Dr. Hugh L. Crowe Day.” He served as president and active member of the College Park Lions Club. THOMPSON, FREDA L. Freda L. Thompson, age 83, of Jenkinsburg passed away on March 10, 2006. Mrs. Thompson is survived by her daughters Shirley and Daniel Campbell of Jenkinsburg, and Sheila and Michael Mines of McDonough; six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Mrs. Thompson is a member of the Silver Sixties club, New Testament and Gospel Harvesters Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hills Cemetery in College Park, Ga. EVANS, TOMMIE LOU HOLDER Mrs. Tommie Lou Holder Evans, age 83, of Shiloh, formerly of Jackson and Butts County, passed away Friday, March 10, 2006 at the Saint Frances Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Evans was born September 1, 1922 in Henry County, daughter of the late John Thomas Holder and the late Nanny Mae Kelly Holder. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. March 11, 2006 WARE, LAKYN DANIELLE Miss Lakyn Danielle Ware, age 13, of McDonough died March 11, 2006 at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Laken, a loving daughter and granddaughter, was referred to by her family and friends as “Lak Lak,” “KK,” “Lak N Bug,” “Baby Girl” and “Our Little Brat.” She was a student at Eagle’s Landing Middle School and enjoyed music, dancing, shopping, football, NASCAR and her telephone. Interment will be at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park. DANIEL, GRACE LEACH Mrs. Grace Leach Daniel, age 83, of Atlanta and formerly of Hampton, died March 11, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Mrs. Daniel was born June 10, 1922 in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Arter Myrtle Mask and George Caleb Daniel. She was a member of Hampton First United Methodist Church and most recently attended Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Mrs. Daniel was a resident of Mt. Vernon Towers, where she was very active; she served on the decorating committee and other advisory committees. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, who enjoyed being with all of her family. She enjoyed traveling and shopping. Her husband, Robert Windsor Daniel, preceded Mrs. Daniel in death in December 2000. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George and Alice Daniel of Atlanta; grandchildren, Laura Daniel of Tallahassee, Graham Daniel and Nathan Daniel of Atlanta; sisters, Lucile Brooks of Columbia, S.C. and Georgia Belle Peters of San Rafael, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Interment at Berea Cemetery in Hampton. KAMRADT, JUDITH ANNE Mrs. Judith Anne Schwank Kamradt, age 59, of McDonough died March 11, 2006 at Portsbridge Hospice. Mrs. Kamradt was born in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of the late Vasta Louise Reavis and Richard Harvey Schwank. She was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling and most of all her grandchildren and family. She is survived by her husband, Albert Joseph Kamradt of McDonough; children, Richard Kamradt of Barnesville and Jennifer and Jeff Tutterow off McDonough; grandchildren, Meagan Kamradt, Kirsten Kamradt and Jackson Tutterow; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park. March 15, 2006 UPCHURCH, M.J. M. J. Upchurch, age 94, of McDonough died Wednesday, March 15, 2006. He was born in McDonough to the late Monroe Johnson and Elizabeth Angie McGarity Upchurch. Mr. Upchurch was a member of the First Baptist Church of McDonough and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was Past Commander and Past Adjutant of the Henry County American Legion Post 55. Mr. Upchurch is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sara Hinton Upchurch; sons, Monroe Jayson Upchurch, Harold Toby Upchurch, and Buddy (Judy) Upchurch, all of McDonough; Five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. MONTGOMERY, RITA LASTIQUE Rita Lastique Montgomery, age 90, passed away March 15, 2006 after a long illness. She was born March 3, 1916 in Port of Spain, Trinidad to Charles and Letita Lastique. Rita was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Charles L. Montgomery. She was also preceded in death by her only daughter, Patricia and son Greg. She served in the British Navy during World War II. She married Charles L. Montgomery in June 1945 in Rockville, Md. After living in several states, they moved to Stockbridge in the summer of 1959 and moved to Nokomis, Fla. in 1973, until 1996 when she returned to Stockbridge. She was a bookkeeper for her husband’s construction company and a member of the VFW and Moose Club of Venice, Fla. She is survived by sons, Bruce Montgomery (Mary Ellen) and Gary Montgomery (Peggy), both of Stockbridge and Clark and Hope Batterson, Lake Worth, Fla., Belinda Montgomery, Brenda Montgomery and Janet Montgomery; Nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. BROWN, BERNICE GARDNER Mrs. Bernice Gardner Brown, age 89, of Locust Grove died March 15, 2006 at Henry Medical Center. Mrs. Brown was born May 17, 1916 in Locust Grove the daughter of the late Lula Elizabeth Gaillard and Samuel Howell Gardner. She was a member since 1929 of the Locust Grove First Baptist Church where she served in all areas of the church. She received her teachers certificate from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, received her teachers degree from Bessie Tift College in Forsyth and her Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia. She was past president of the Locust Grove Women’s Club in 1942-1943, 1946-1948 and 1972- 1976 and a faithful member that was active in keeping the club going for years, Locust Grove Historian and Citizen of the Year. She was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association, Bridge Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Hospital Auxiliary, first teacher in Henry County for Special Education, leader in getting Locust Grove Institute Building on the Historical Register and in getting the steeple replaced. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Brown, Sr., brother, John Gardner and sister, Lula Thomas. A resident of Forest Park, she is survived by her husband of 65 years, Eugene Ray and many nieces and nephews residing in the greater Atlanta and Macon areas. The daughter of Madison and Avaline Bowles, she was born and grew up in Gay, Ga. and shortly after graduation from Georgia College at Milledgeville, taught school in Gordon and Acworth before her marriage in 1940, after which taking residence in Atlanta and then Forest Park. She was an active member of the Jones Memorial United Methodist Church until curtailed by health problems. Edith enjoyed working in her flower garden and was an avid reader and bridge player. Interment will be at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens. March 16, 2006 JOHNSON, L. MALCOLM, DR. Dr. L. Malcolm Johnson, M. D., 70, entered into rest March 16, 2006 in Milledgeville. Burial at Camak UMC Cemetery, Camak, Ga. Dr. Johnson was born July 6, 1935 in Warren County, Ga., son of the late Roger Johnson and Ruth Gheesling Johnson. He graduated from Thomson High School Class of 1954, the University of Georgia and University of Tennessee School of Medicine. He was an Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War, and the Panama Canal Zone. He retired in 1999 as co-owner of Industrial Medical Center of Hapeville. He was a member of Jonesboro UMC.
