The news that Mr. A. G. Harris, Sr. (Uncle Alsie, as he is familiarly known) had taken his own life at Flippen last Saturday, caused much surprise and sadness throughout the community. It was the result of mental abberation. For two or three weeks his family have been aware that his mind was giving away, and though nothing serious was apprehended, had been carefully looking after him in order to prevent an accident befalling him, on account of his condition and extreme age. Everything possible has been done for Mr. Harris by his family to provide for his comfort and pleasure, in his age, and Mr. Ab Harris, his son, occupied a room adjoining his. At 2 o'clock Saturday night he went in to see how his father was resting, and found him quietly sleeping. He made another visit about 4 o'clock, and was astonished to find the bed empty. He peered out a window which was found open, and almost in an arms length was horrified to find his aged father hanging by the neck to the limb of a tree, with life extinct. He had taken the sheet from his bed, twisted it into a rope, which he tied to a limb of a tree and stepped from a chair. Mr. Harris was 90 years of age, and was one of the best men that ever lived. No man was ever absolutely freer from harm to anyone, and his friends were numbered by the score. He had the unreserved confidence and esteem of all who knew him. Verily a good man has gone to his reward, leaving behind him a clear record and the example of a pure life. His remains were interred in the Flippen cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. A. Thurman performing the funeral ceremony, and a very large number of people gathered to pay the last sad tribute of respect.
