On the 16th day of November, the grim messenger of death visited the home of our beloved brother and sister, E. L. Tolleson, and bore away Birdie, their little daughter, in the morning of her fifth year, leaving the family circle broken, her parents with sad hearts and tear stained faces, and little brother without a bright-eyed sister for a companion. The home and hearts that were once brightened by her presence are now saddened by her departure. Father and mother, cheer your sorrowing hearts by knowing that your little daughter has changed a cruel world for a place in the fold of the good Shepherd who takes care of the little lambs. If to you the summons had come, and she were left to face this frowning world without a father's affection or a mother's love, Oh! how sad. Father, listen; you did what you could; your care and protection was ever around her; your home was her home; now she dwells in a mansion above this sinful world, and protected by Him who says, "suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of God." Mother, we know you miss the sound of her little footsteps, merry laugh and prattling tongue, but weep not; you ministered to her wants as only an affectionate mother could. Now you have a darling little daughter free from the cares of this life and the bitterness of this cold world. Little brother, you have no Birdie now to join with you in play, but remember that you can some day join her beyond the river, where she will be taken from you no more. Those little ones who still brighten your home, may you ever lead them beside the still waters, and when they have come to the valley of death they will fear no evil, for He will be with them. We should all remember that we too must die, lose our strength and beauty, bid adieu to our friends and companions, and meet the grim messenger of death, who is coming to send our bodies to the grave and our souls before God's tribunal, to be sentenced to an endless eternity. Her little boat has anchored safe. On heaven's golden shore; It crossed the river we must cross- Her sorrow is no more. Still we can keep her memory bright, And walk the way she trod, And know she waits to welcome us Into the home of God. Let us be thankful through our tears That she was ours so long, And try to meet her up above And join her in the song. Ola, Ga. Nov. 22d, 1896. G. W. J.
