Ammons of the Bersheba community in Henry Co. According to his tombstone in Old Sharon Baptist church cemetery, Mr. Ammons was born January 2, 1828 and died August 23, 1903. It is said that he was a son of Uriah Ammons, who may have died in Morgan Co; and perhaps the grandson of Sterling Ammons of Meriwether Co.(neither verified). In later life A. J. Ammons was known as "Uncle Jack Ammons". He married Elizabeth Jane Bryans who was born October 13, 1832 and died March 21, 1901 (tombstone). She was a daughter of John Bryans Sr. and "consort" Cassandra Holland(also buried at Old Sharon). And, a granddaughter of Patrick & Elizabeth Bryans. The Ammons couple lived their entire lives near Bersheba. Their old homeplace is still standing on River Road about a mile from the old Jeffares store. During renovation the current owner found papers with A. J. Ammons' name. He believes that the house dates from the mid to late 1840s. Though it has undergone numerous remodeling, it is surely one of the oldest homes in Henry Co. Andrew and Elizabeth Ammons had at least eight children(order unclear): Mary Ann "Mollie" m. Memory J. Turner; Frances L. m. Frank Marion Patterson; Emma C. m. J. Hamp Stroud; Walter D. m. Zora McDonald; Ada m. Charles Copeland; Mildred Fletcher m. James Nathan Knowles. An unnamed infant & son John B. Ammons died as children. The 1878 date above is speculative and based on the second portrait, believed to be that of A. J. Ammons and his youngest daughter, Mildred Fletcher, who was born May 1, 1875. Both portraits were found on the homeplace of James N. and Mildred Fletcher(Ammons) Knowles. It is unclear whether "Uncle Jimmy Knowles" built the store building, but his son Walter Olen "Scott" Knowles inherited the property, and later ran the store. Through a process of elimination-using known facts and existing family images-it was determined the only logical identity of these individuals is as stated here. Larry C. Knowles-June 5, 2007 Additional Comments: A. J. Ammons had a brother William Barton Ammons("Uncle Bart Ammons")who with wife Talitha(Turner)Ammons, is buried in Turner Methodist Church Cemetery. "Jack" and "Bart" Ammons are mentioned often in the diary of James B. Knowles (1852-1858)-now available on this site. [James B. Knowles boarded with A. J. and Elizabeth Ammons for three years while attending-then teaching-at the O'Dell Academy in Bersheba] A diary entry on pg. 84 notes that Jack & Bart Ammons'- "Ma had arrived from Texas". Later entries confirm that she was living in Henry Co. during the late 1850s.
