The parcel was deeded to Leonidas in 1844 by his uncle, Rev. James Carter of Butts Co. James Carter, long time pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Butts Co., had purchased the original land lot for $22.00, after his brother Daniel Carter of Warren Co. had defaulted on taxes. Daniel had won the 202-½ acre lot in the Georgia Land Lottery-(check date-and newspaper legal notice on taxes). James Carter also deeded an additional 44 acres of the same lot-(#201-8D.)to Leonidas’ sister Martha Ann Harper, wife of Rueben J. Harper. Leonidas later married Rueben’s sister Frances in 1850. After her death he married Priscilla Nelms(Nellums)in 1852. Leonidas and Priscilla are buried in unmarked graves in the Harper/Carter/Maddox cemetery on Jackson Lake Rd. near its terminus at Keys Ferry Rd. Their son, Alexander, told of helping build a rock wall enclosure- [see cemetery photo on this site]. It is believed that Leonidas’ parents, Daniel who died in 1837, and wife Martha Ann(Scott)Carter also died in Henry Co. The site of their graves is purely speculative; perhaps at this site, or the original Sardis Baptist Church location, or a separate family cemetery, or even at Macedonia Baptist Church in Butts Co. Sardis Baptist Church did not move to its present site until 1843!
