1863 SLAVE MEMBERSHIP ROLL-SARDIS BAPTIST CHURCH, HENRY COUNTY GEORGIA

This image was taken from the microfilm copy of Sardis Baptist Church minutes 
in the Georgia State Archives. The original document is in the Baptist Church 
repository at Mercer University-Macon GA. The church minutes cover the period 
from 1847 to 1880. There are membership rolls from 1850, 1863, 1866, and 1870. 
Only the most successful copies are shown here, though most names are legible 
on the microfilm images.

This list of 1863 slave members of Sardis Baptist Church was later added to the 
second page of "white male" members for the year 1850. This image has been 
cropped from that page. As was usual in other documents, slaves were only 
listed by first name. In this case the names are followed by -"belonging to"- 
then the surnames of the various slave owners. 

Slaves, and former slaves, were actually part of the church body until April 8, 
1871, when a general "church letter" was issued for their dismission, providing 
that they form or join a church of the same faith and order!

For more information about the church see other entries on this site, and the 
corresponding Butts Co. site. Because of the location near the Butts Co. line 
there were as many(or more)church members from that county as from Henry Co.
