KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 13 of 137) March 14-21, 1853 The 14th continued: “Wrote some letters-1 to Pa, 1(to)A. Judia Johnson*, and 1 to H. V. Miller-he was once my teacher-he lives in Texas..”. The 15th: “worked the road-got dun 1 hour by sun-in the eve I heard that those men caught Uncle Joe in Dooly at Pa’s”. The 17th: “..I wrote som Solicit tickets(for D. H. & W. Parker)then went to church-they went with me-J.(Joshua)G. Pain preached-came back-ate dinner at J. E. Buntyn’s-came on then wrote a letter to my father..”. The 18th: “..in the evening myself and Mr. & Mrs. Hooks went and took supper with Mr. & Mrs.(Soloman)Odell-G. W.(George)Welch was there-after supper G. W. W., M. J. O, and myself went to Mr. Alexander’s to a candy party-but few there- we never stade very long-came to S. O. & as G. W. W. was going to stay there-I likewise stade-enjoyed myself fine with them two-we sat up tol(?-tolerable)late- ½ after 11”. The 19th: “..I went home..at nite I was told that E. Turner was at her father’s- so after supper I went over & back to(the)Polemic(at the school)-a good many persons here-after they was all threw-we schoolboys commensed”. The 20th: “L. M.(N.?)Fargason(to B. G. H.)stade a short time..meeting at Sharon (church).. went to W. T. T.(Turner’s)till bed-time..”. The 21: “at school tolerable full-at noon went to L. M. F.s for to get him to cut my hare..”. ___________________________ *Judith(Noles)Johnson is clearly James Knowles’ aunt, having married Timothy Johnson in Hancock Co. in 1817. Tax records in Hancock Co. link Timothy Johnson to “Uncle James Gray” of Baker Co.(noted later on page 23 diary entry, July 10, 1853). Timothy paid taxes on land that was won by James Gray in the 1827 State Land Lottery! James Gray had married Judia/Judith’s sister, Elizabeth Knowles, in Hancock Co. in 1820.
