April 4-14, 1853

The 5th: “…this eve Mr. Hilsman give us a lector(?)-or som of us-how to get 
better lessons”.

The 6th: “…just as Mr. Hilsman asked(?)Books-we saw that the fire had broke out 
near the school house and we went and worked at it till 3 o’clock-at night 
wrote a farce(off)for Mary Moore(?)-up till 1 o’clock’’.

The 7th: “  wrote a letter to my father”.

The 9th: “went to the academy-after writing some went to the store & then me 
and Wm.. Parker hope(helped)Wm. Biggers to work a young(?)beast(?)-till near 12 
o’clock-then went to the acdy(academy)to write again on a play…”.

The 12th: “…I have got my farce to write off to night-I have done it-just mid-
nite(?)-I finished it just one minute ago”.

The 13th: “…went home with D. L. Coleman* to A. J. Ammons”.

The 14th: “at 10 o’clock A.M.(?)myself & E. D. Oslin went to meeting-Mt. Bethel-
J. G. Pain preached-Text 12C(?) 31V of Luke-Pain came home with B. G. Hooks”.

*Coleman obviously then boarded with Andrew Jackson Ammons, whose home is still 
standing on River Road, about a mile from the old Jeffars store at Bersheba. An 
earlier store(perhaps the one from the diary)was said to have been located 
nearer the Honey Creek road junction. The Academy location is unknown, but was 
near a spring, and was also close to Mr. Ammons’ home and the store.
